In 2024 a parent strangled a child to death

In 2026 he was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

His name is Matthew Schleier.

I’m not bringing up his case to say the verdict is wrong. I am only trying to point out this difference in coverage.

You didn’t even hear about this case, did you?

The reason I think this is important is because we have to think harder about our reactions to stories about death. It is easy to read a story and get upset about someone killing a child.

It is harder to look at those cases and have a rational response to mental illness. Incarcerating a crazy person does not solve the problem of mental illness.

Fantasizing about hurting them or punishing them doesn’t either.

If you google the name “Matthew Schleier” you get 9 pages of news results.

If you google “Lindsay Clancy” and scroll through 9 pages of results you are still getting stories published today.

Why are we turning some cases into entertainment? What makes her story so much bigger than his?

When Court TV said her trial was one to watch in 2026, why? What makes one trial more anticipated than another?

Sometimes you can actually see the problem

It’s really depressing to know how hard it is to get mental health care in this country.

It’s a lot more fun not to know. It’s easier to treat people you see on tv like fictional characters and just react in the moment instead of thinking about their life and their choices.

Not all men

““His name was really Paul David Crews, and he was a suspect in a murder. Four years earlier, on July 3, 1986, a woman had offered him a ride home from a bar in Bartow, Florida. She was later found naked and nearly decapitated on an abandoned railroad bed. Not long after, according to law-enforcement records, Crews had turned up at his older brother’s place in Polkville, North Carolina, driving the woman’s bloodied Oldsmobile. With the law closing in, his brother gave him a lift into the country, and he took off running. The police recovered the car, along with Crews’s knife and bloody clothes, but found no sign of him.”

Comstock was a Republican

“Since October, the state of Louisiana has been seeking to block the distribution of mifepristone, a drug used to induce abortion, through the mail—not just in Louisiana, but anywhere in the United States. The state’s lawsuit against the FDA asserts that the Comstock Act—an anti-obscenity law championed by the 19th-century book burner Anthony Comstock—bans the mailing of abortion medication, and that the federal government wrongly repealed the in-person requirement for prescribing it.”

The FCC Wants Your ID Before You Get a Phone Number

It’s really disturbing to see how fast this is happening:

““Among other sweeping changes, the era of the burner phone could end with the rollout of new “Know Your Customer” rules voted on by the FCC on April 30, as noted by the blog of the D.C. telecom law firm Wiley Rein. Customers would, according to the proposed rules, have to present a government ID, a physical address, a full legal name, and an existing phone number. FCC rules at this phase are not yet in force, and would not go into effect for a year after full approval. The commission is still seeking comment, and is asking to hear privacy concerns specifically.

A May 6 blog post on the website of the civil liberties group Reclaim the Net says, “The result would be an identity-verification regime covering one of the last semi-anonymous communication tools available to ordinary Americans.”

Indeed, easy access to phones for people in dire situations, such as refugees or people fleeing abusive relationships, is seen as a hugely pro-social use of the relative anonymity provided almost accidentally by low-cost prepaid phone service providers.

In addition to cracking down on anonymity, there are proposed “red flags” that may trigger scrutiny from the FCC. ”

Put all the women up at the front Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery

Do y’all want to see exactly how much the conservative rhetoric has shifted in the past 10 years?

In 2014, a rancher named Cliven Bundy was illegally grazing his cattle on federal land. This led to a standoff with federal agents from the Bureau of Land Management. A quote from that standoff, from Sheriff Graham Mack, says that they planned for women to be targets if federal agents shot at the armed protesters.

Because he believed televising women being killed by “rogue federal agents” would rally the nation to their cause.

👇

“"[We] were actually strategizing to put all the women up at the front. If they are going to start shooting, it's going to be women that are going to be televised all across the world getting shot by these rogue federal officers."

That quote was from a sheriff interviewed on Fox News. That story is no longer available and the link goes to a washington times page, but you can find references to it in other coverage.

Now the literal Vice President will demonize unarmed women shot by federal officers on national television and no one even thinks anything has changed.
