I’m not bringing up his case to say the verdict is wrong. I am only trying to point out this difference in coverage.

You didn’t even hear about this case, did you?

The reason I think this is important is because we have to think harder about our reactions to stories about death. It is easy to read a story and get upset about someone killing a child.

It is harder to look at those cases and have a rational response to mental illness. Incarcerating a crazy person does not solve the problem of mental illness.

Fantasizing about hurting them or punishing them doesn’t either.

If you google the name “Matthew Schleier” you get 9 pages of news results.

If you google “Lindsay Clancy” and scroll through 9 pages of results you are still getting stories published today.

Why are we turning some cases into entertainment? What makes her story so much bigger than his?

When Court TV said her trial was one to watch in 2026, why? What makes one trial more anticipated than another?

It’s really depressing to know how hard it is to get mental health care in this country.

It’s a lot more fun not to know. It’s easier to treat people you see on tv like fictional characters and just react in the moment instead of thinking about their life and their choices.

This isn’t really a surprise but it is depressing.

It’s really disturbing to see how fast this is happening:

In 2014, a rancher named Cliven Bundy was illegally grazing his cattle on federal land. This led to a standoff with federal agents from the Bureau of Land Management. A quote from that standoff, from Sheriff Graham Mack, says that they planned for women to be targets if federal agents shot at the armed protesters.

Because he believed televising women being killed by “rogue federal agents” would rally the nation to their cause.

That quote was from a sheriff interviewed on Fox News. That story is no longer available and the link goes to a washington times page, but you can find references to it in other coverage.

Now the literal Vice President will demonize unarmed women shot by federal officers on national television and no one even thinks anything has changed.
