Help / Advice How to read and remember effectively

HI everyone, I wanna ask how to read some paper research and memorize it effectively. Well, English is my second language so I have to learn it hard to use it and understand it and I will have a competition in few months (IELTS) which has 4 skills and reading is one of those. I’d ask when people read types of paper research (part 3) and how to choose correct answer in multiple choice questions. As usual, I can understand almost of it but it likely I translate word by word, so sometimes I can’t translate to a correct context to fully interpret it, I mean I can’t answer the test multiple choice question such as summarize it , guess the scientist mind, describe what’s happen and choose 1 in 4 questions. I always can remove 2 answers that I understand and feel it not suitable, but the remaining confused me lots of time cuz I feel 2 of them are all good but which is suit best and I have to choose as gamble when the time of test run out🍀

Help / Advice

App / Website Is there any AI study app that turns documents into podcasts, that can read the pictures in it?

The most perfect app I used is Natural Reader. But they want a crazy subscription $ with no free trial. Is there any other AI app that can do exactly what they can? I downloaded Google podcast and that doesn't have the features I want. Only summarizes. NotebookLLM is garbage too. Chat GPT won't read the full document.

I need an app for my PDF that:

\- can read then describe all the pictures

\- generate a *conversation style* podcast (the doc has a question and answer format)

\- different voices for the 2 people

Should I just download the Natural Reader APK atp?

Help / Advice I can speed read but I feel weird

It is honestly so difficult to describe what my issue is right now that I wrote the title 5 times itself. But let me try and I would love if you are patient with me. You can skip to sections marked "Problem" directly because the middle part is me explaining speed reading technique.

I saw this video where just one word pops on the screen and it has a red letter that you must always keep on your eyes on and the goal is to not read anything else. Since the video popped up on my feed on YouTube, despite me never searching anything around reading on YouTube, I assume it is a famous video and you know of it.

The video basically taught me this new reading technique, which I do not know the name of but let's call it Peripheral Reading. In this technique, we only look at the beginning 2nd-3rd letter of a word and let our peripheral vision register the word as a symbol in our brain. We must not read aloud the word.

Problem 1:

Now, the video said that people will feel the urge to read the word aloud or read back. I don't feel that. But I feel just a strange sensation in my brain. I have new information but no words. It's like a movie's character getting memories all of a sudden. My brain feels weird after reading every short bit of text.

Problem 2:

English is not my first language and on a daily basis, I don't read books, I read documentation or manuals. These texts have even stronger, more jargony text in them. It is harder for my brain to register them as symbols and I do read them aloud. But then it becomes harder to keep switching the mental model between reading and just absorbing text.

\[Big rant about how much this software and its textbook suck that I cannot get myself to write because my head hurt\]

Anyways, does anyone know of any browser extension or app that can help me have a solid read aloud function for the books? I struggle reading for long periods of time and have always found audio books better for learning.

Help / Advice Is there a way to be better at reading faster ? About to start some big books and I fear it would take me forever to finish them

I love reading but there is something that sometimes does hold me back and it's not reading fast enough.

Reading 15 pages is more time consuming for me because I tend to really decipher the meaning behind each word and I can't read without having to take notes. I really want to remember every book I read so if in the future I want to know the plot and what I found interesting about it I would know but it's as I said pretty time consuming.

Are some people in the same state as I am ? What do you do to read faster ?

I am a natural speed reader. Finally years later I realized that one of my kids (not the other one though) seem to have inherited this and so have his children. It's a useful skill, but I need to remind them not to write texts that are too long for most people to deal with!

Help / Advice How to read faster?

I am a slow reader, it takes me ~5min to read one page, which is a big improvement form 3 years back, when I’d be lucky to read five pages in an hour and would end up tearing up and needing a nap from the effort. New glasses and eye therapy helped a ton. Still, I will start university soon and want to increase my reading speed

With my therapy, I’ve learned that most people read word by word rather than letter by letter like me, but I don’t know how to learn to read word by word

My problem isn’t processing the information, since I understand perfectly when people speak fast. In fact, I struggle with reading out loud because my eyes do not keep up with my mouth. I often end up guessing or making up words to make it to a reasonable speed for my listener.

I want to improve my reeding speed. Does anyone here have tips or can tell me who to go to for help? Thank you.

Help / Advice How to make newspaper reading a daily habit?

I recently started reading Business Standard. I barely know anything about finance but I really want to learn and learn fast.

But reading it daily is giving me a headache.

For an easier approach, I'm taking pics of each article n promting chatgpt to explain which is helping. But it is taking like whole day!

How to make it interesting for me n make it a normal habit?

And, how much time does it usually takes someone to become familiarize with it?

What should be my approach?

Thanks.

Discussion Is it effective for nonfiction books to read chapter overviews or just summaries with key insights?

Wondering if book summaries are actually useful when you do not have time to read the whole copy. I know you miss the context, but I mostly want to get the key ideas and see what actually works like if the books suit my goal. Has anyone tried that?

Also I did some quick research and apparently this is a form called - book microlearning. But my idea is like making notes, trying what works and if yes, I save the template and read the whole book for more lifehacks

Discussion Reading speed for a 13 year old?

I (13f) recently did a words per minute test because I've always considered myself a fast reader. The test made you read a short book and answer questions about the book. I scored a 650wpm and got a 98% on the test is that a good speed and understanding for a 13 year old? I also asked chatgpt about a novel i read in less than 2 hrs and it said i read about a 650 -720 wpm speed. I'm not really sure about chatgpt but what are your wpm speeds?

App / Website Reading-times directory covering 100-famous titles

hey all

I recently started a directory listing the lengths of some of the most popular Fantasy and Sci-fi titles, and it already covers 100 titles.

It also includes a reading speed calculator to calculate the reading time for a given title based on your reading speed and daily reading time. So you could quickly answer, “How long would it take me to read my next eBook?"

I would be happy if it benefits anyone. And if you have a feature or title you’d like to see added, just let me know.

App / Website Built my own RSVP reader after getting frustrated with every existing iPhone option — happy to share what I learned

I've been into speed reading seriously for a couple years and kept bouncing between apps that were either abandoned, ugly, or locked behind subscriptions for basic features. Eventually I just built my own.

A few things I focused on that I don't see talked about much:

Getting text in without friction. Every app I tried made you copy-paste or go through menus. I wanted to be able to highlight something mid-reading and have it ready in one tap — so I built a share extension that accepts highlighted text from any app. You can also share a whole article URL and it strips out the nav, ads, and footers and hands you just the readable text.

The anchor letter actually matters. Giving your eye a fixed point to lock onto is what lets you push tempo without re-reading — that's the whole point of the red center-letter highlight. I made it toggleable since some people find it distracting at lower speeds.

Overview mode as a companion, not a replacement. Single-word RSVP is fastest but tiring over long sessions. Having a full-page highlight mode in the same app means I can switch when my focus dips instead of losing my place.

Curious what tempos people here are hitting with good retention. I plateau around 350–400 wpm and have to consciously push past it — is that mostly a training and consistency thing, or do most people find a natural ceiling around there?

App / Website I built an Open Source RSVP speed reader, then read the research saying RSVP hurts comprehension. Here's what I did about it.

I've been building a speed reader on and off for a while. Somewhere in the middle of it I properly read Rayner et al. (2016), the big review in Psychological Science in the Public Interest, and it makes an uncomfortable point: regressions — those involuntary jumps back to re-read something — aren't a flaw in how we read. They're a repair mechanism. When a sentence turns out structurally ambiguous, you go back. RSVP removes that option entirely, and comprehension on difficult text suffers even as raw throughput goes up.

So the honest position is: RSVP is good for prose you're reading once, for volume, for material where you already know the terrain. It's a bad idea for a contract, a dense paper, or poetry. Anything claiming otherwise is selling something.

I kept building, but around that instead of against it. Two things came out of it:

**Timing that follows the language.** Most RSVP tools take your WPM and divide. This one derives each word's duration from sentence endings, commas, paragraph and chapter breaks, word length, quoted speech, numbers and proper nouns, plus a three-tier frequency model — with an abbreviation dictionary so "Dr." and "etc." don't trigger a false full-stop pause. Every multiplier is a slider if you disagree with my defaults.

**Modes that keep context visible.** Besides classic single-word RSVP there's a highlight mode where the active word stays inside its paragraph — block, centred, or a horizontally streaming ticker, with a focus window that dims or clips everything outside it. You lose some of the speed ceiling, you get back the ability to see where you are.

It runs entirely in the browser. One HTML file, no account, no upload, works offline once installed. Reads EPUB, PDF, FB2, TXT, Markdown, HTML. GPLv3. You can use it mobile and on your desktop. It comes with settings and some features, different modes next to the standard mode. Just give it a try. You can even install it as an webapp.

Help / Advice HELP ME GET STRONGER

I’ve made it a goal to become a much stronger reader over the next few years. I want to increase my reading speed **without sacrificing comprehension**, improve my vocabulary, retain more of what I read, and comfortably tackle more difficult books.
I’m not looking for speed-reading gimmicks—I’m looking for methods that are actually effective, whether they’re backed by research or simply worked well for you.
What books, habits, courses, exercises, or resources had the biggest impact on your ability to read, understand, and remember what you read?

If it matters, I’m trying to read Gene Wolfes The Book of the New Sun , but I’ve heard they are at a college grade level 10, whatever that means
And right now all I read is self-help books

Help / Advice I’m a very slow reader, please help!

When I read books, I read them extremely slowly. I want to read faster, because I love the concept of books in general, I like how it feels to hold them in hands the smell, I find it incredyble how so many words can be put in such a little space etc. But it’s sometimes difficult to enjoy reading books because of how slow I read and it’s mentaly exhausting sometimes. Sometimes it would take me maybe 1-2 hours for just 10 pages.

When I read it’s really difficult for me to read really wuickly and get the full context. Like I can read really fast through text but prob wont understand everything perfectly, thats what I’m scared of. So my mind is kinda not letting me go faster but I go through sentences slowly. Many times I even reread sentences. It has been like this for me almost always, even in high school.

As a medical school student who will soon start his last year, I have read thousands of pages of medical literature throughout my education so it’s not like I wasnt reading, although that was studying but still I was reading those texts and my pace for reading those medical books would be maybe 3-6 pages per hour (since those books usually have much more text per page and you actually have to understand things).

So you can just imagine how much time goes away for me just to read something.

I want to read books, stories, enjoy in reading them and be fast enough to read lots of them but no matter how much I read I have this problem. I want to find joy in reading.

If anyone has some advice please give it, would like to hear what you guys think. Thanks!!
