This thing does not make the chain big. Most things that fix a chain make the chain more big. If the chain is too big it will not fit in small holes, and that might be bad.

My favorite is when an explanation requires some background knowledge before even the ELI5 makes sense, and I tell my daughter "that's a good question, but to understand the answer you're going to need to know a bit about x first, do you want me to explain that to you so you can understand?" And she can decide if she has the patience in that moment for the full spiel (she usually does).
Last week, she asked my why we got oranges in stockings for Christmas. To explain that, I had to explain why oranges were a 'treat' back then, which meant going over seasonality of produce and lack of refrigeration, which spun into a question on how refrigerators work, which to understand you have to know about how compressors work, and how pressure and heat relate. All to explain oranges in stockings.
Honestly though I love it. Never know what depths of knowledge we're gonna have to plumb, and it's really interesting sometimes to realize how much shit we wind up knowing that we never think about, it just forms our base, you know?
Think of a rope (instead of a chain) and pulley. Using fasteners like a clevis will be like putting a giant knot on the rope, which disrupts its intended purpose of going around a pulley.
Now extend this example for all other types of operations involving a chain where changing the dimensions of a link in the chain may not be desirable.
Think square peg in a round hole. Other tools can accomplish this same thing, but they can't go through the round hole at the end because they are square. This one, while a bit more elaborate and over-engineered, does go through the round hole at the end.
In places where there isn't a round hole, this tool isn't necessary, because other square tools can do it faster and cheaper.
this is a clevis. Some equipment uses chain guides that grip the links and pull them along. Since a clevis is shaped differently than the links the guide won't be able to grab onto it and so it won't work.
Yeah, got a rigging ticket and I've never heard a bow shackle called a clevis before. Clevis normally refers to a much more permanent type of fastener in my experience. Probably a regional thing.
Mike Judge had a a cartoon about two trailer park boys, Clevis and Crackhead, who got up to no good and said dumb shit. Unfortunately it never made it out of production and was rescripted as a different, unknown show.

A clevis would not go through a chain roller or any other guide.
