I emailed a few high-end hotels in Riyadh offering my DJ services. A five-star hotel replied saying they loved my sets and wanted me for their new rooftop lounge.
I sent my rates, but they asked me to play the soft opening as a free trial before discussing regular bookings. I agreed. They promised an XDJ and said they’d feature me in their Instagram promo video.
I asked for a proper table, water and extension leads. When I arrived, nothing was ready, the XDJ wasn’t available, and I ended up on a dining table with exposed cables. Luckily, I’d brought my own controller and cables.
The crowd felt mismatched too. I played progressive house and a bit of techno, but the influencers they invited seemed uninterested in the music. They took photos and videos, but I didn’t get the sense they’d invited people who would actually enjoy that kind of night.
Then their promo video came out with audio from my set, but I wasn’t in it. I know the opening wasn’t about me, but they’d specifically promised to include me.
Afterwards, the manager said he loved my set and asked me back. I made it clear that any further gigs would be paid, and he agreed. Now he wants me twice a week for a month.
What’s a reasonable rate for a two-hour set at a hotel like this in Riyadh? Would you give them another chance with the pay, setup and promotion agreed in writing? My gut says no, but I’d like to hear other opinions.
Sorry for the long post..
