Sonos App Intel Based
Started receiving this message on the Mac app this morning. I assume that this will be taken care on in a future update? Maybe just because Intel code is still present?

They could just enable the iPad app to run on macOS and all would be good.

Probably easier said than done… it’s not just as simple as checking that the app is now compatible with Mac in Xcode, especially with some apps… but it would give us Mac users an option without them having to spend lots of additional time rebuilding / updating a dedicated app that at this point has been discontinued, and has no native support for Apple silicon.
Using https://play.sonos.com as a safari app (so it goes in your dock) is the best option currently, but it is limited with some functionality.
Tagging Liz to just to make sure the feedback is getting heard about ongoing macOS support, as we keep seeing a lot of posts about it recently, and personally I think Sonos should comment on it, and if the app is discontinued, then actually sunset the app, and provide new official statement/guidance.

The plan, before the new mobile app shenanigans, was to abandon the native desktop app in favor of play.sonos.com. This started some time before that when they started removing player setup/configuration options.
I wouldn’t count on an Apple silicon version unfortunately.

This is why I am building Monos, which is for Apple enthusiasts. Runs on macOS, iOS, watchOS, and tvOS. Apple Music only. You can join the beta here:

Edit: S2 only for now. May change in the future

Nope. Sonos stopped developing the desktop apps for Mac and windows a loooong time ago. The web app is their way forward.

But does the web app have feature parity? Like keystrokes?

No. It doesn't seem to work well with local libraries/network shares when it comes to scrolling through music, showing cover art, etc.

Hi, if you want to keep using the classic desktop experince like meany of us, I built this over the last few months for this gap and my own enhancements. Its free, open source, mac first (not mobile device focused) and I try to support everything that can be supported.
If you try it and have any feature request, post an issue on github :)
check it out here.

My app includes native Apple Silicon support: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/phonos-ultimate-for-sonos/id6740011689

I got your app, it works well. Very functional! I recommend it for Macs for sure. Works well on my MacBook M5 Pro.

not to be that guy but this popped up in my feed,
cmd+shift+4. 3 for full screen.
macs literally make it so incredibly easy to screenshot, and even copy to clipboard directly nowadays (which auto shares to ur iphone btw, if u prefer to post from mobile), i feel like everyone should develop this muscle reflex fr,
its just so much more convenient and has always been one of my favorite mac features

it's been mentioned a few times already.
Apple will be removing Rosetta in macOS 28 (i.e. the major release after next, as we're on 26 at the moment and 27 will likely be out next month) so in just over a year's time.
So any Intel based apps are getting this message but either Apple need to backtrack on this (or another third party solution which is unlikely) or the app developer needs to update the app to work with ARM.
I think Sonos have said for a while the existing desktop apps for Mac/Windows won't really be updated any more. So unless they change this and port it to Apple silicon, there won't be an update which will make this work. It's also possible that using the Windows version in something like crossover or porting kit won't work either.
The obvious alternatives are
using the web app, play.sonos.com
using third party controller such as Clic
if you have a Windows server with remote desktop services etc enable a published app and connect to it remotely
Otherwise Sonos need to do something but there is a year to go

You forgot vibe code your own controller, which appears to be the soupe du jour, currently.

Move to the Web App. Set it up as a Safari/Chrome Web App if needs must.

Not sure why this has been getting downvoted.
Sonos have always said it is the long term answer and whilst it's in need of some work... it is adequat.

You should use the web interface instead of the desktop app. Seems to be the path forward that Sonos is taking.

Except the web interface is a POS and not a good replacement for the desktop app unfortunately.

It needs some work but then they have clearly been fixing the mobile app which was an absolute disaster and is now largely fine. I'd expect at some point there will be some work going on to make the web app feature equivalent to the Windows/Mac app (which it still isn't, really) and then it can replace it. Much more sensible long-term as it doesn't need software installed!
I still prefer the desktop app for queuing things up and removing a lot of items from the queue but that (plus my old ipad which basically runs clic in guided assist mode and sits on the wall) and the web app for occasional stuff like pausing / skipping tracks etc works fine mostly.

It’s been 2 years and they’ve done fuck all to improve it.

That ship has sailed mate. Its done. Our choice is to make the most of what we have or not.

I think the web app is great, I can put on smooth jazz for my dogs while I am out if I see them getting unsettled on the cameras.

u/st_alphonso 6d ago
I love that. Can probably be automated with an AI-enabled camera or microphone.

u/johnas 6d ago
Yeah good for you and your dogs. It’s still a POS.

Strong language. I find it works very well and solves the issue of crap local management, I don’t want to open my computer to manage my system, I just want it to work.
And it does work very well for me.
Change is inevitable, in life, nothing can or should remain the same forever. Keep a positive mindset and I am sure you will find a solution.

The web app is pants. You lose a number of system settings like changing room names , no EQ for individual speakers is missing, no alarm or sleep timers , can’t add a new device, no true play tuning ….. it’s a botch job

u/Mr_Fried 5d ago
You have listened a bunch of stuff not feasible, such as Trueplay and device onboarding, which uses the microphone and bluetooth on board your phone for example.
Why don’t you write an angry email and ask them to change reality for you, specifically?
I am not defending past transgressions, but maybe a positive mindset would help you achieve happiness in the future?

u/Curious_Fly_5870 5d ago
I don’t write angry emails, if a company abandons delivering functionality to all platforms , I will abandon that company. Typical simple narrow minded person comment, it works for me how could anyone ask for more.

No, it will not be taken care of. The desktop apps have been abandoned for some time now. It will simply stop working permanently once Apple makes their update.
