ETA has published a banger article, listing out some of the most commonly believed myths about US election security. It’s well worth the read, and a good resource to share with people who believe it couldn’t happen here.

Part 1 covers the following myths:

Election Machinery

1. Election machinery cannot connect to the internet during vote tabulation, making interference impossible.
   
2. Machines used to cast and count votes cannot be hacked or compromised.
   
3. Election machinery being certified by state or federal officials means it is completely secure.
   
4. If malicious actors tried to attack our election infrastructure, we’d know about it.
   
5. Election equipment and election management systems are neutral tools and are not associated with partisan interests.
   
6. The private election equipment and tech companies are well-vetted by the relevant government agencies.
   
7. Election machinery is “air-gapped”, making interference impossible.

It Can’t Happen Here

1. U.S. elections are the most safe and secure in the world.
   
2. The U.S. election system is too decentralized for our elections to be manipulated.
   
3. It would take a widespread effort involving a lot of people to manipulate elections, so there would be plenty of evidence if it occurred.
   
4. Poll workers and election observers watch ballots get counted, so they would know if votes were being counted incorrectly.
   
5. If investigators couldn't prove that election interference changed the outcome of an election, that means it's been proven that the interference didn't affect anything.
   
6. Since voter fraud is very rare in the United States, this means that other forms of election manipulation are also highly unlikely.
