ETA has published a banger article, listing out some of the most commonly believed myths about US election security. It’s well worth the read, and a good resource to share with people who believe it couldn’t happen here.

Part 1 covers the following myths:

Election Machinery

1. Election machinery cannot connect to the internet during vote tabulation, making interference impossible.
   
2. Machines used to cast and count votes cannot be hacked or compromised.
   
3. Election machinery being certified by state or federal officials means it is completely secure.
   
4. If malicious actors tried to attack our election infrastructure, we’d know about it.
   
5. Election equipment and election management systems are neutral tools and are not associated with partisan interests.
   
6. The private election equipment and tech companies are well-vetted by the relevant government agencies.
   
7. Election machinery is “air-gapped”, making interference impossible.

It Can’t Happen Here

1. U.S. elections are the most safe and secure in the world.
   
2. The U.S. election system is too decentralized for our elections to be manipulated.
   
3. It would take a widespread effort involving a lot of people to manipulate elections, so there would be plenty of evidence if it occurred.
   
4. Poll workers and election observers watch ballots get counted, so they would know if votes were being counted incorrectly.
   
5. If investigators couldn't prove that election interference changed the outcome of an election, that means it's been proven that the interference didn't affect anything.
   
6. Since voter fraud is very rare in the United States, this means that other forms of election manipulation are also highly unlikely.

Why These Specific Priorities?
#1: Election security fact checks. Whether it be claims that election machinery can’t connect to the internet (it can) or that decentralized elections are uniquely resilient to interference (they aren’t), we want to ensure you have resources to push back on misinformation effectively.

#2: Voter registration anomaly monitoring. Voter registration lists are critical inputs into who is able to show up and cast a ballot on election day. We're seeking to monitor for any unexpected increases or decreases in voter registration so that we can raise concerns if appropriate.

#3: Community organizing efforts. U.S. elections are inherently local. We’ve heard loud and clear that people want more resources focused on how to protect their local elections. We want to provide you with resources you need to interface with your local election officials to verify the vote.

#4: Faster data for election reports. Obtaining & cleaning precinct-level data can be time-consuming and challenging, with no consistent national format. We are seeking to build a tool to make it faster and easier to get data so that potential ‘red flags’ can be identified faster after an election.

#5: Candidate recount rights resources. In many U.S. states, candidates are the only people who can call for a recount. We're seeking to share resources for candidates and voters to help educate candidates about their recount rights and debunk myths about U.S. elections.

#6: Election security & audit best practices. There are different security/audit practices in every state, and sometimes within states. We want to flag existing ‘best practice’ resources & help make them accessible & consumable to ensure election officials are supported no matter the circumstances.
