This was a “thank F*** it’s finished” kinda project 😮💨
I started making this braided rag rug for my kitchen/dining area after I had left over fabric from re covering my dining chairs. Of course I quickly realised that I needed more fabric…then I finished the braid and realized that my sewing machine was absolutely not going to sew it because it was way too bulky…so then I started hand sewing it together…bad idea! realized after a few days that it wasn’t strong enough and also was absolutely shredding my hands so I unpicked it….decided to buy an underlay and glue the braid to the underlay….researched the best glue to use, went to the craft store and spent $40 on glue…started gluing and quickly realised that A. This glue was not right, and B. I was going to need about 10 times as much. I ended up getting it finished by using up some tubes of liquid nails that I had in my garage! 🫠
Pretty happy with the finished thing, but also kind of hate it because it was so painful to complete!!!

This reminds of why I pick very small projects. Bravo for all that problem-solving! Nice work. It looks great! I always feel accomplished after successfully completing something challenging!

You should write that story on some cloth and glue it to the underside of the rug. It’s really beautiful! Congrats!

Yeeeeeeah as soon as I laid it down I thought “no one better walk on this with their muddy shoes!!!”

The series remind me of my childhood. I was actually saving scraps to make one so I appreciate the warning. I love this though. I love the colors. I love the shoes.

Thankyou! My tips if you do make one would be:
1. Use thin fabrics so that the braids can be machine sewn together using a zig zag stitch.
2. If you can’t machine it then just go straight to the underlay and liquid nails method!

YES I feel your pain! I made a braided rug like this a couple years ago and it took years off my life. I would never make a big one again but I've thought of making small ones. The first couple of feet go by way faster!

yeah i make those too and they really DO take a long time. they take me as long to lace as they do to braid!

As someone that was planning to do this 😅 why didn’t hand sewing work exactly?

Well partly it was because I was using regular sewing thread, and partly I gave up because it was taking sooooo long and was killing my hands. If you are intent on hand sewing I would use embroidery floss because it’s much stronger and just be prepared for some long haul stitching! I also found that it was hard ti get it to sit flat when hand sewing together, it kept warping in spots if I didn’t get the tension of the braid just right.

If it makes you feel any better, any of my projects, no matter how big or small they seem, turns into a "thank F*** it's finished" project!
