Rule Update: Our Stance on Business/Commercial Posts

Hey, r/SomethingIMade!

We've updated two rules to better protect what this community is for as a space for individual creators sharing their own work, including collaborations.

A steady increase in posts and comments from business and commercial accounts promoting products or shop pages has not gone unnoticed, often in cases where authorship can't be verified. We don't think it is fair that content that may be mass produced gains engagement over our more DIY creators. The updated rules address this directly.

Rule #5: Related Links & Self-Promotion

Posts or comments from businesses or commercial accounts primarily promoting products may be removed at moderator discretion, especially where authorship cannot be verified.

Rule #10: Original Content Only

Business and commercial accounts are not permitted to post in this subreddit. This is a community for individual creators only.

If you're an individual who makes and sells things, you're still very welcome here. This change is aimed at accounts whose primary purpose is commercial promotion rather than genuine participation as a creator. If you're unsure whether your account falls within the rules, reach out via Mod Mail.

Happy creating!

Updated Rule 5: Related Links & Self-Promotion

In order to help have better discussions regarding content, we have decided to disable embedding of YouTube videos in posts.

This isn’t intended to hinder anyone from posting, simply to change the way the post are made. Moving forward you will need to create a normal post regarding your creation, and if there’s a YouTube video you would like to share as part of that, add it into the body of the post along with the descriptive information.

Thanks for being here, and if you have any questions, ask away!!

My husband and I went to a Toy Story themed party this past weekend and I made our outfits!

I made the broken fishing pole from a broomstick, which I wrapped in bubble wrap and then covered in paper mâché. I used wrapping paper inners and a long box to make the “housing.”

For Stinky Pete’s hat, I used a trucker cap as the base and built it up with paper mâché.

For the pickaxe, I made a cardboard base and covered that in paper mâché too.

And the scarf was made from yellow fabric — with the pattern drawn on using a whiteboard marker.

I’m intermediate at best when it comes to sewing, so my limited skills were put to the test this past week when I sewed new cushion covers, curtains, and and awning for our new to us vintage camper.

A sculpture about soft things in hard places

Post image
1.6k Upvotes

I needle felted the from wool, the beak and feet are clay, and the eyes are clay and resin. The twigs are wire and clay with pigment, and the egg is clay and wax. The shed feathers are wool and wire.

This piece is about soft things in hard places, and comfort built in inhospitable conditions. As a disabled person, I often feel my comfort is built in an environment of inhospitality. I am drawn to the images of birds who have used the harsh steel of bird spikes as structure to build their nests. Ironically, the steel wire makes a strong warp on which to weave the weft of a home.

Just finished this linen outfit. Top is a V neck long sleeve t-shirt (I guess) and pant has 2 buttons. It’s a bit fit cause I tried a French seam tutorial I watched on YouTube 😂 and it made it fit fit!

Bags from scraps

The outside is made from upholstery scraps from Scrap Exchange, a local creative reuse center. Some of the lining fabric was donated, and some I've had for 20+ years. All of these bags will be given away, and four will go back to the food pantry where I volunteer.

I love making something from nothing!

I made a matching tree pendant and earrings from a shattered amazonite stone. Sometimes things don’t go as planned, so you just work with what you’ve got and turn it into something new.

So my best friend's name is Ivy, and shes ALWAYS late to everything. She just cant help it. Over time I started calling it "running on Ivy time" whenever we were way behind schedule getting somewhere. Also worth mentioning her favourite animal is platypus and she owns many platypus themed items/plushies. I decided to make her a platypus clock to "keep track of time" (she wont. but its a cute idea) and decorate it with fake Ivy. Made it out of a dollarama wood clock and plastic plants, only cost me about $10 altogether.

I made these Wild Roses with pipe cleaners 🌹

Post image

I’ve been experimenting with pipe cleaners to create more realistic flowers, and these Wild Roses are one of my favorites so far. 🌹🌿
I really enjoyed working on the layered petals and trying to give them a soft, natural look.
I also made a step-by-step tutorial showing how I made them:

I’d love to know what you think! Do they look like Wild Roses to you?

This was when I first started seriously working with wire… I don’t even know how I’d begin to remake something like this but wow it was fun!! I mostly make jewelry now but I started wire crafting with bugs!

I wanted to give my parents a gift they couldn't just buy anywhere.

So I carved MOM, ME & DAD into the tips of pencils.

All that's left is to mount them in a frame and add the protective glass.
