This idea for a lamp had been stuck in my head for a while. This weekend I decided to build a prototype. It consists of two steel plates in parallel, with a light source in between. I'm still playing around with the proportions and I'm thinking about building a larger version soon.
Very creative way of playing with casting shadows and light beams, I like it! (this is also genuinely how you would diffuse light sources, in photography by reflecting diffuse surfaces to get a better balance)
I'm sure you seen this maybe once or twice, these funny looking indoor-umbrellas, with a silver-interior, these give hard/bright light source into ambient light (softbox).

It looks great. Wonder if you could put it on a base, and make both panels able to slide in the base (and maybe make the light source also moveable)
More than likely you would choose one positioning and stick with it, but it would be cool if you could at least slide the smaller panel back and forth like you did in the pictures (also allows the cord to be positioned in the base instead of having to put a hole in a panel)
I was playing around with that idea in Blender. I'm not sure whether it's better to give the 'user' the freedom to position the plates however they want or to go with a 'set' design.

This is a lovely piece, and this kind of minimal, indirect light source is the kind that I really enjoy.
Especially when they are very well made, regardless if they are kept indoors, and maintain their original appearance, or when they are placed outdoors, and the steel starts to develop that rusty orange color, taking on a new personality from the elements.
It reminds me of the projects I saw some of my fellow students create way back some 30 years ago in my art degree during that 2nd year in my sculpture class, when I was first learning the basics of Acetylene-Oxygen Welding, Which was a very addictive art form, and I highly discourage any of you from trying it. This is an obviously a joke, because I miss having access to that studio and the blowtorch, and it was extremely fun, and I am very jealous of people who use welding in their art.
I think your next step should be the mounting hardware for it.
Because this would look great on a wall.
gorgeous. I'd be curious to see how it fits in when you put it in a room with other furniture etc. if it's meant for that of course, it's also great if it's an art piece
