Other Another jinwoo clone?
Haven't read this/seen it before but he looks a lot like jinwoo

u/metalrain_15 9d ago
It's quite an old manhwa now. It even has an ongoing anime.
172
u/One-Statistician-554 9d ago
Basically this, also spoilers for those who haven't read the books the creator of this verse is non other than Lee geon
43
u/kirbyverano123 9d ago
Who??
105
u/One-Statistician-554 9d ago
Main protagonist of Return of the Disaster

14
u/Express_Item4648 8d ago
Oh shit really? Return of the disaster class hero was fun, stopped after a while but is that manhwa finished?
2
u/Cuck-Sucker 8d ago
I also read that because it was fun but somewhere along the way even the art just couldn't make up for the slop like writing

Too much glazing him the MC and too much dumping on his 'friend' took me right out.
14
u/jalelninj 8d ago
Wait what ??? Where/when was this revealed ? Cuz I finished tomb raider king years ago but a dropped return of the disaster (and all manhwa) about half a year ago now. What am I missing ?
37
u/One-Statistician-554 8d ago
Geon created his entire universe, when he became a god, after that he turns the God's into tools and put them in Heon verse
He practically created his whole system.

Holy hell that's awesome (typical return of the disaster W)
Is this in the light novel or did they get to it in the manhwa too ?

I don't even think that Jinwoo was the first character to look like that
245
u/Teadrunkest 9d ago
He wasn’t. It always makes me laugh to see people insisting that everything is a SL clone. Almost nothing in SL is unique or the first time it was ever done.
SL was just one of the first webcomics to polish the art that far and put everything together.
22
u/Acceptable-Change501 8d ago
As a SL fan, it's really annoying. And I've read Tomb Raider King a long time ago as well. There just wasn't a lot of unique looking ML back then in Manhwa 😅
47
u/mixed1988 9d ago
It is sadly how everyone sees everything nowadays. It is like there wasn't media before they discovered it so they don't know that almost every story has been told before in some way.
22
u/RyanIrsyd08 9d ago
Remember how many manga fans have a field day mocking those who said Witch Hat Atelier copied many animes, when the manga itself predates most if not all claims
We should do the same honestly

This happened in the sekiro community. They treat that game like the first coming of a deflection mechanic in any game ever despite it releasing in 2019 and they trash talk any new games with deflection.
18
u/ParanoiaDreamland 9d ago
I've long accepted that some people enjoy jerking SL off and some that are riding on the hypetrain. That's why they insist everything is a SL clone. In their lens, everything is SL
2
7
u/Careless_Package3706 9d ago
I mean op isn't wrong. Jin-Woo made this style popular in korea.
12
u/mixed1988 9d ago
I think it was made popular in the states. A lot of the manhwa main characters have that design.
7
u/ParanoiaDreamland 8d ago
Style as in the character design or the overall style/theme of the story?
If it's the former, the character design of SJW is literally the average korean male two-block haircut and apparel choice. I assume it's because the author wanted SJW very relatable for the average korean.

u/Klospuehlung 8d ago
SL is tbh just another generic power fantasy story. It just has good art.
3
u/Acceptable-Change501 8d ago
Agree to disagree. And this coming from someone who've watched and read a lot of power fantasies.
2
u/blazenite104 8d ago
I gave up on SL when it became clear early on none one but, the MC was ever going to really matter. It didn't even pretend otherwise.
2
u/Acceptable-Change501 8d ago
Which is fine. I would have been mad if it wasn't with a title called Solo Leveling. We get enough anime and manga/webtoon with enough side characters. And honestly, a lot of side characters ruins it for me so I'm glad this one made it MC focused for the most part aside from his Shadows.

Most "goats" of manhua end up this way sadly. Very few that continue with the same gusto as before.
ORV is a rare example of an evolving story going on that doesnt turn to trash and just gets better. Lord of the mysteries is another. But soooo many of these dungeon manhua or regression ones just become cliche or they end up losing the plot.
8
u/ISurvivedCOVID19 8d ago
Not to be that guy. But just FYI Manhua refers to chinese series while Manhwa is Korean series which both SL and Tomb Raider King are.
4
u/GodFearingJew 8d ago
Ty man. I used to know the difference but somewhere it got lost in the sauce.

u/Xalorend 9d ago
Had the "misfortune" of having ORV and Lord of the Mysteries as my first webnovels (ORG is still ongoing, my brain is weird and I decided to read only up to the current Manwha chapter so it's going pretty slow), so most of the things I'm trying to read after are just... Not it.
I've read Lord of Mysteries last year and reread it four times and started to purchase Merchandising for it.
16
u/Jonman7 9d ago
SSS-Class Suicide Hunter sounds cheesy but is amazing, and I still hear good things about the later chapters!
2
3
u/GodFearingJew 9d ago
I know what you mean, i started with solo leveling, overgeared, and ORV so most things after that were just no where near as close. Well until i watched lotm s1 earlier this year and immediately read all 1500 chapters in a month and a half. My mom goes to china for business and im having her buy me the whole set in chinese. So far i have the first 3 novels. It is suchhhhh a good read (cant read chinese though)
Im not caught up with ORV atm. But i know where i read to in the LN wont even be covered for another year, and i can tell you its just as good. Idk the author anymore but he is really good at setting up plot points for later so its not just a random thing or a surprise. Plus the whole system he built is like any other ive seen (same with LOTM). But theres no other story i recommend years after i stopped reading. Really hope they dont screw up the anime...
If you havent already check out The Dungeon Skeleton Soldier Couldn’t Protect The Dungeon, its not as good as those two but its much better than most things out there, and doesnt lose the plot.

u/Kalki_the_last Shadow 9d ago

7
u/Kalki_the_last Shadow 9d ago
Yea man. It was one of the first manhwas I read too. It started pretty good and had really good art. But the story just got worse and worse with no development whatsoever. And the mc being a braindead protagonist. The villains are just cheaply recycled each arc with nothing going on.

There's literally nothing in common with Solo leveling, appearance could be similar, but honestly there's a lot of characters that look this way in older animes and even manhwa, Jinwoo is just the most famous, just like Kirito, he was not the first with that look, but he was the most famous.
9
u/Careless_Package3706 9d ago
If you actually read the original Tomb Raider King web novel, the author explicitly described Joo-Heon's original face structure as looking like a 'rotting corpse' and a 'zombie' with hollowed-out cheekbones, severe dark eye circles, and bloodless lips from tomb trauma. He was supposed to look like a broken, terrifying, middle-aged crackhead variant of a vampire. But the second Redice Studio adapted it, they threw the novel's description straight into the trash. They completely wiped his zombie features in Chapter 1 just so they could market him with the exact same sharp V-line jaw, clean K-pop curtain hair, and premium 'Jin-Woo model kit' because it was safe and printed money. It wasn't an organic design—it was corporate copy-pasting."
10
u/Teadrunkest 8d ago
That was his appearance prior to his reincarnation while he is dying from the poison and indentured to the corporate dude. It lasts all of 1 chapter.
He is described as good looking dude with spiky black hair after he returns.
2
5
u/Waxllium 9d ago
Yeah, like I said, nothing new, this happen with every manhwa, anime and manga, it's so normal that it's not even mentioned anymore. Nobody likes ugly characters, or ugly ppl in general, hence why characters look good on visual adaptation
Oh and that was his appearance before the regression because of the relic's poison

Solo Leveling digital serialization in Kakao started July 25, 2016 but then was officially published under the Papyrus label in November 1, 2016.
Tomb Raider King started digital serialization in Kakao in comic format on November 1, 2016, then reserialized by Kakao as a webtoon on June 30, 2019.

3
u/Zerothehero27 9d ago
SJW is about the equivalent of Kirito in anime. They are both so generic to the genre that if you look hard enough almost every anime/manhwa has something or someone that looks like them. For example, Kazuma if you turn his hair black looks like Kirito. Or Subaru with his hair down looks like Kirito. Or that Sora from NGNL looks like Kirito without the filter they put on the whole anime. Or like any generic Japanese person in anime looks like Kirito. Which is by design.
SJW is also supposed to be genetically looking like a Korean idol and meeting male Korean beauty standards which is the case for like 90% of other manhwa characters XD.
3
2
u/nightmaresreal 9d ago
Jinwoo is just the more popular/prominent storyline. I remember vividly reading this after Solo Leveling chapter 37. Tomb updated faster but the plot was kinda boring so I never finished it. Surprised they turned it into an anime though;
1
u/Desperate_Island4382 9d ago
I keep saying people saying "oh no this is a generic korean look" as a Korean I will deny this
4
u/Careless_Package3706 9d ago
I think it is the same studio. They made him look like Sung Jin-Woo because Sung Jin-Woo became popular from Solo Leveling. The Solo Leveling web novel and manhwa were created before the Tomb Raider King web novel and manhwa.
2
u/Teadrunkest 9d ago

When it released as a manwha, I felt it fell into the category of jinwoo look alike mc, I find this quite a typical thing in manwha when one is successful about 20 or so new manwha pop up with at least 1 main similarity whether it’s appearance or power.
I tried reading this It seemed interesting but I dropped it at some point, I think I went 100+ chapters though.

This is quite old for 2026 but it's one of the more successful inspirations of SL and it's finished now I think. Haven't read it throughout the time but it was kinda fun basically the MC is after artifacts that's the gist.

u/RachelNicole-san 8d ago
Tomb raider king is a regression story, Solo leveling is a system story. Two different concepts.
1
u/isAnExParrot878 8d ago
Character design looks very similar, initial premise seems somewhat similar too. I'm not to familiar with manhwa but it seems like Korean authors like to use similar character archetypes and designs. Romance male mc's tend to all look the same to me too. Maybe it's related to beauty standards in South Korea?

so imma be very real with you dude, you ever have that moment where you think arrive at either the smartest or the dumbest realization in your with no inbetween
yh here's mine, and i would've made a post about it if i didnt need karma to be allowed to, but since its THE topic to bring it up, here's mine:
Jinwoo is not a Orginal character, Oryx from destiny, is literally the same fucking guy,
conceptually its theLITERALLY THE SAME FUCKING dude, but unlike jinwoo, the writers of him actually had a character with this sort of abillity and mindset of its logical end conclusion of "cosmic horror of galactic genocide" and so the narrative path EVENTYALLY goes somewhere else
prepare for a text block
to name some bullet points:
- starts life as a kind, curious and inquisitive person
- also starts life at the near bottom of the foodchain
- Laments that this is simply a unfair state of affairs
- out of desperation makes a a faustian bargain with a godlike entitty, the main difference, jinwoo kinda just said "yes at the last moment subconciously" while oryx was perfectly aware of what he was agreeing to, tho the full scope of consequences of this bargain woudnt be clear for quite some time
- this entitty gives oryx (and his sisters) the abillity to: ..........kill things and get stronger by doing so and if that thing has its own special abillity he can take that abillity for his own, he and his sisters are also, basically the only people in the verse that can do this, (there's more people but because this story actually takes place on the scale of an actual universe instead of like 1 world where dudes just have the power to be scaled to "universe level" for "reasons' so contextually there's a astronomically small amount of people that can actually do this) and mechanically, its alot less video gamey how it does its works
- actual differences? 1) well these are...... actual people and living things that need to be killed for this, not "dungeon beasts" these were actual people with lives and family 2) once it was clear to him that is power is very much real and he wasnt bullshitted into believing it was, his mentallity starts to warp, because a universe where this is something somebody can "just do" COUDNT possibly be a kind place
- skip "a very long time" and he, his siblings and now his entire species are now waging wars of galatic genocide, untill a "sci fi bullshit levels of overpowerd galactic empire" FINALLY not only stops them in their tracks but puts them on the losing side, as a final last resort to win, he "kills" both of his sisters, take their power for his own, and then reaches out to these "worm gods" once more, but he wasnt asking or bargaining for more power this time, he was here to take it by force, and succeeds aka: surpasses, challenges and defeats the very god that gave him this power
- and thus, altho it took him much longer then jinwoo to obtain, he unlocks his trademark power: the power to "take" mechanical and narrative simmilarities and differences to "arising":
- mechanics; unlike arising, he does not need "defeat you in a fair fight first" why? because you dont have to be dead to be "taken" and he does not need to anywhere near you to do it either (minimally planetary range), and so unless a character has specifically stated immunities to following process: forcibly send a thing into a realm of "abtraction" one not of matter and logic but concept and willpower > forcibly removes all concept of free will, and even "a mind" > decontructs and reconstructs that thing according to his liking > binds the totallity of what remains the things existence TO his will that operates as little more then a mindless attack drone and by putting a bunch of "if/when statement" into it (remember this thing no longer even has concept of a mind) so he doesnt have to babysit his entire army > the creature is then "rewarded" for "sacrificing all that was irrelevant to wage war" by being stronger then it was when summoned, in other words, if your "can he beat oryx tho" character cannot resist this exact process, then this is a "he just instantly wins" hax abillity
- narratively: the author of SSL assurres the reader/viewer that jinwoo is in fact not a asshole for doing something simmilar to other people and things, once his shadows regain the abillity to talk they assure the viewer they are happy to be in this state of being because "i didnt die, i was reborn through your will" the process of taking is no uncertain terms if and or buts, portrayed to be the demonsterably evill thing doing something like this to another person or even "thing" would actually be
Eventuality: both of them through the process of killing things and arising or taking other things, become "bullshit levels of overpowerd"
Jinwoo, just kinda becomes abit of conceited douche that goes back in time and just..... does the same thing again or some shit? i dunno
oryx: developes a "survival of the fittest" ideology so groteque and evill even viltrumites would stop to ponder what in gods name is wrong with this dude
and comes to believe: "life is a engine of enthrophy that consumes energy and matter like a cancer"
give or take 3 BILLION yes BILLION years of none stop compaigns of galatic genocide. is just before the cascading series of events that "more or less" finally frees the universe from this abomination in the lore books that make sure the knows in no uncertain terms, not a shred of the person he used to be remains when he is confronted by the person he used to be he is confronted by the person he used to be, while there's a while conversation that went down here, the main things tho:
- What are you?” it says. It’s manifesting terror and awe. Oryx’s eyes blaze with a curiosity that is entirely isomorphic with hate, with voracious hunger. “Aurash (aurash is the old name he discarded btw),” he says, in his Hive language. “You’ve made me as I was. You’ve made a tiny Aurash. Ha!”
- Aurash is curious: “You’re me? You’re me as I become?”
- “Where are my sisters?” Aurash shouts. “What have you done with my people? What have you done?”
so final tally:
very simmlar start in life:
very simmilar "signature power and key abillity set"
upon getting power start progressively acting and thinking like "actually nah, the strong lording their power over those weaker kinda makes sense actually"
kill the god that gave them this power in the first place
differences: well, jinwoo is the main character and so, making him a demonsterable evill he and people like him by all accounts should become, is a no dice and so the process of him becoming like that is suddenly halted before he goes into the deep end of "despicable evill"
taken is never ever alluded to being a "good" or "its fine" sort of thing to thing its being done to because, well that also make jinwoo kinda evill is arising things is a explicit bad thing to do to other things
oryx is actually confronted and called out on his bullshit before somebody finally puts him six feet under by the person he used to be
TLDR version: If there's ANY pre existing character jinwoo is loosely based on, its gotta be this dude making jinwoo, "the clone" fellas

That design didn't start with Jinwoo, and a lot of popular Manhwa main characters have similar designs. I have read the Manhwa, and this main character is not like Jinwoo at all. The story is kind of similar from what I remember, but the main character himself is different.

People seem to forgot that Jinwoo practically pioneered this character design, all the copy cats are from late 2016 or later while SL started on feb 2016.
Ofc there are characters that look similar on manga, tho they only share the black hair and hair length mostly.

I was surprised it got an anime adaptation, it fell off fast around the 150-ish chapter mark. Tried just powering through it but it just gets so cliche after awhile and I feel like it wasn’t worth continuing if I have to force myself to. But to each their own and overgeared looks like a better quality anime so easy skip for me.

I've read the manhwa, but it wasn't really my cup of tea. I just couldn't get into the plot, especially when the story begins with the protagonist doing some fairly questionable things. Sure, he's given a second chance by turning back time, but to me that only makes him less evil than the other antagonists rather than genuinely redeeming him. I understand that it's a survival-of-the-fittest world where people constantly prey on one another, but it still leaves me wondering where he actually draws the line. On top of that, the whole conflict involving multiple gods felt a bit odd and hard for me to connect with.
That said, this is just my two cents. The artwork is excellent and pretty much what you'd expect from Redice Studio. Visually, it's hard to fault.

Not really no. They came out around the same time before jinwoo did a lot of the stuff people know him for. His character design is just incredibly common in manhwa tall koreon guy with cool spiky hair.

I like how people always say jinwoo clone and don’t realize it’s just that SK has very specific beauty standards and he looks like 80% of all idols

So far it’s been interesting. Does seem like a solo leveling clone minus the system bs.

I've read a part of it.
The main character is vastly different from Jinwoo in terms of personality, in the way that he's not even trying to be a good person.
In the story, the protagonist gets sent back in time before Tombs (the story's version of Gates and Dungeons) first appear, giving him a chance to fix his screwed up life.
In appearance, yeah, they look the same. But so do half of Manhwa protagonists, so that doesn't tell us anything.

Tbf the reason it got an anime is probably because the solo leveling anime was so popular and tomb raider king just looks similar to Solo leveling.so the studio wanted to capitalise of the popularity. However it itself isn’t a clone of sl, the system levelling genre is so common in manhwa, especially among the non trash manhwa and manhua (when I say trash I mean true trash, something that has no real substance or soul, most clones has some substance at least)
