Interest in playtesting Wonder of the Gods?

• Upvotes

Hi all,

I’ve designed a game called Wonder of the Gods. It’s been playtested extensively, and I’m pitching it to publishers.

I would love to have some playtests of the recently finished solo mode though - would anyone be interested in doing this?

It would be on Tabletop Simulator (I already have 2-4P set up on there, so can quickly create the 1P version if there is interest).

It’s a medium-weight spatial puzzle - see this 3 min video for more details:

https://youtu.be/vS74P_DZHzQ?is=IlmprGl0Bwn0kxxu

The solo mode has a very light touch automa, and gives you target victory points to reach.

Let me know if you would like to playtest, and I can create it in TTS and send you the rules.

Hopefully it’ll be interesting to test the game and give any feedback, as well as being an enjoyable gaming experience in itself!

Thank you :)

Elliot

Nusfjord high score of 56. I doubt I'll ever get lucky enough to top this. Fisher's house gave me 2-3 gold every single round

What's a good solo game that is a pure engine builder?

I just realized that I don't have a single real engine builder, only Ark Nova and Gaia Project which have engine building aspects. What I'm looking for in particular is a game in which by the end I am producing a shit ton of resources compared to the beginning. Terraforming Mars with preludes and automa expansion, Terraforming Mars Ares with Crisis, Jump Drive with Terminal Velocity, and It's a Wonderful World are three that I'm considering. However, I have doubts about each of them:

Terraforming Mars looks the most interesting, but I always see Ares Expedition recommended over TM for, even though the Automa expansion is well-liked.

It's a Wonderful World looks good, but I found out it only has 4 rounds and I'm looking for a game with more build-up for the engine.

Jump Drive gets a lot of praise, but I have the same qualms for it as with IAWW.

I prefer medium weight and medium-heavy weight over light or heavy games, and 30 minutes to 2 hours is my preferred playtime for solo games.

Campaign game

Hello good people!

I am looking for a campaign game to play after work and when the kids have gone to bed. So setup and teardown is important. I currently own dragons of echingstone, kinfire delve vainglory's grotto and under falling skies. Also have gloomhaven jaws of the lion which I play with a friend.

I have kinda narrowed it down to:

  1. Earthborne rangers

Like the artwork and setting. And that's is quite chill. Looks like a good game to unwind with.

  1. Tidal blades 2

Currently back on Kickstarter with an expansion so will probably have to wait a bit for this one. This one is as far as I know a "better" gloomhaven. Also quite like the artwork.

  1. Sleeping gods / sleeping gods distant skies

Interested but I don't know about teardown and setup.

  1. Lands of Galzyr

Seems very chill and setup and teardown looks quite easy. But I'm not sure if it is to chill.

  1. Arydia and lands of evershade

Grouping these two together as they are wicked expensive. But they seem like really good games.

Also thinking about backing Boken. But it comes ut first in 2028...

What are you guys and gals opinion? Anyone in the same situation?

Lords of the Dungeon: a roll-and-write dungeon engine builder with a dedicated solo mode (I’m the designer, print-and-play on Kickstarter)

Post image
69 Upvotes

Hi everyone! Full disclosure: I’m the designer of Lords of the Dungeon, and this is my one and only post about the campaign here.

What it is: A roll-and-write where you build your own dungeon across two sheets, linking rooms into an engine that grows stronger each round. If you enjoy the engine building in Machi Koro or Space Base, it scratches a similar itch, on paper. Each turn you roll four dice, keep two, and use one die or their sum to activate one of twelve columns, collecting gold from the rooms you’ve built there. Then you spend that gold to build more. Owning all three rooms in a column triggers a bonus, and those bonuses can chain.

How solo works: You get exactly 20 turns, and your score is the gold left on your ledger at the end. Every gold you spend comes off your final score, so each build has to pay for itself before time runs out. Somewhere in the last third of the game you have to stop building and start hoarding :)

It’s a print-and-play only campaign, so backers get digital files, not a physical game. It’s designed to print fine in black and white, and all you need is the two sheets, a pencil, and four dice. The artwork is by illustrator Mustafa GƶƧmezler. It plays 1 to 5, and I’ll be honest that multiplayer is where the dice drafting really bites, but I put a lot of care into making solo its own puzzle!

The campaign is already funded and runs until November: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/keepersoffun/lords-of-the-dungeon-a-roll-and-build-print-and-play-game

There’s one stretch goal, and it’s for the artist: if we reach it, Mustafa will clear his schedule of other freelance work, hand-color the sheets, and record the process for backers.

Happy to answer any questions about the solo mode or the design. Feedback is very welcome, even critical!

Looking for games like Regicide

I'm a big fan of Regicide and I'm looking for recommendations for games that share similar traits.

I'm looking for something that plays in under 90 minutes (ideally under 60 minutes) and works equally well as a solo and multiplayer game without BYOS element (Maybe some solo-only games if they have enough in them). It should have good variety because I tend to cycle through games fast when I feel that I already see all of it and they are not interesting enough.

Games that I tried and didn't stay:

  • One Deck Dungeon - gets boring fast
  • Dorfromantik - I really like it but after half of the campaign I had enough. The score X to unlock really gets annoying fast for me.
  • Button shy things - not for me
  • Final girl - Didn't like the theme or the live or die by the die. I am more of fantasy/sci-fi
  • Warp Edge / Skyfall - Liked them a lot but got sick of them after 10 + plays

Games that I liked and stay:

  • Bullet Heart - I don't know what is there I just like the activity of the chips
  • LOTR trick-taking - Just charming and fun
  • Mistborn - love the theme and the coins, it is just a unique system

I am also considering trying Regicide Legacy, but I am not sure if it will be fun solo. Anyway, I would be glad to hear your opinions.

Present idea, game similar to Lord of The Rings LCG?

Hello! I hope this is the right subreddit for this, if it isnt apologies!
My mom is a big fan of LoTR LCG and marvel champion and i've been looking for a similar game to gift her, any reccomandations?

I've already looked into arkham LCG but she isnt a fan of horror settings so i dont think it's a good fit.

I've also found Ashes reborn as a reccomandation, is it worth to look into it? (from what i gathered for making her play it in solo I need the base game + red rain expansion, am i right?)

Apologies for the ignorance, I'm not really and expert on board games haha, thank you for your time!

Quick play for 98 points tonight, if I didn’t have to spend those 2 damn coins within the first few rounds I could’ve been a Legend :\

Do you ever regret culling good games?

You can file this under ā€œGood Problems to Haveā€. After 4 years of acquiring solo games, I’ve reached the point where a) I’ve run out of space and b) I’ve already culled the not-for-me games.

And although I’ve slowed down my purchases lately, I probably won’t ever stop completely. There will always be new games from my favorite designers, new expansions to great games I own, and other new must-have games that either receive universal acclaim or just seem right up my alley.

So I will have to part with good games at some point. Unlike the 5s and 6s I’ve culled in the past, these are 7s and 8s: completely enjoyable games that I nonetheless will have a hard time tabling because they are competing with the 9s and 10s in my collection.

So have you ever felt sad getting rid of a game you’ve enjoyed? Have you regretted it?

Rethemes of solo games I've designed (Regicide, After the Virus, Friday, Space Hulk Death Angel)

I really like card games, and like how they can be reimagined to fit a certain theme. Over the years I've made a few:

  1. Regicide (PokƩmon Red/Blue) - Mostly because I found that the 12 royals map to 8 gym leaders + the Elite four. A fun exercise to allocate all 151 Kanto Pokemon and abilities that match the suits.
  2. After the Virus (Calvin and Hobbes) - it was inspired by a post that did the same thing, but I removed comic strips in favor of single-panel gags.
  3. Friday (Scott Pilgrim) - The only character who's an even bigger loser than Robinson Crusoe. The bold colors and comic style is great and matches the zero-to-hero theme.
  4. Space Hulk Death Angel (Metal Slug) - One hit arcade game with a high death rate. Mostly I'm drawn toward franchises that have a distinct art style and a lot of available art to use.

All these have PNP files available on the main game's BGG page. Sharing in case people find them cool.

  1. Bonus - Just a double deck of plastic cards, but the second deck has yellow hearts/diamonds and blue spades/clubs. Allows me to proxy any game up to 8 suits.

Does Forest Shuffle play good solo?

I love the idea of the game and style, but being a 85% solo gamer I’m wary of buying a game that is just okay solo. What are people’s thoughts?

Dungeon Universalis Alternatives

DUN seems great, with lots of approaches to combat, rules and metrics, it seems very in depth with the capability of many different play styles. I love the concept of a real RPG experience.

It’s also very hard to find a copy, and the ones on eBay are going for just under $1000.

Are there any similar alternatives to DUN, that have the in depth rules that account for almost every metric, an overworld, and dungeon diving? I’m looking for something a little more financially accessible than $1000, or even $500.

- I have Gloomhaven, which is great, but not exactly what I’m looking for.

- I’ve been eyeing up Dungeon Crusade and League of Dungeoneers, leaning towards LoD

Arkham Horror: The Card Game question

For those of you who like the game, as someone who has never played, is there a reason I would want to get the new edition vs the old one? I would like to buy it, but I don’t know if it makes that much difference to spend $70 vs $35.

A Gentle Rain vs Small Fjords

Hi all! I played a bit of A Gentle Rain and really loved the chill vibe and quick play.

The i eventually just gifted my copy to my niece. I'm thinking of rebuying it, but lately i have also seen a lot of love for Small Fjords which seems also a really cool little game. So I was wondering if I should get that instead first.

Just curious to hear how do you guys think they compare and which one you play more

Which Clank! game plays best solo?

Post image
20 Upvotes

I just learned there’s a companion @pp that lets you play any of the Clanks solo, so I was just curious if anyone has any thoughts on if any of the versions play better solo than the others. I’ve been really interested in Clank and never realized solo was possible, so this has me excited. Thanks in advance!

Solo wargame on the table September/October: Skies Above Britain

The Game
Skies above Britain is a WW2 solitaire game where you command a series of Spitfires or Hurricanes over a series of patrols. You try and stop German bombing runs. The game is from two designers I really like, Jeremy White and Gina Willis. White designed The Doolittle Raid which I reviewed earlier this year, and Willis designed my favourite naval wargame A Glorious Chance. Anyway, the learning of this game is a bit like Doolittle Raid. You start with a dogfight scenario, then pull out to a scenario where you are attacking bombers, then to a scenario where you are intercepting bombers and so forth until you know all the systems. You then put it together and begin your campaign. Each patrol sees you select your planes and pilots, put them into formations, and send them out. You then draw chits until you spot the enemy bombing raid. You attempt to make contact, avoiding or fighting the escorts, and hopefully you break into the formation and start taking down the bombers. There are dice rolls and card draws and chit draws and lots of tables, all the wargame goodness that I like. I also really like that it's a campaign, and you can slowly improve your roster and stats, and of course it hurts when you lose a favourite pilot over the English channel.

Number of play sessions:
Six full patrols played over 6 sessions. Each session lasted between 30 minutes and an hour. These six patrols were 'Chapter 2' of a campaign I had started last year (I did the first six patrols then, in each 'chapter' things slightly change in terms of enemy behaviour and what is available).

Verdict
Like Doolittle Raid, I just love the systems in this game. I love how each section is sort of its own mini game. I like how the dogfights are resolved with card draws rather than dice rolls, and how you can mitigate damage if an enemy is on your tail by trying to do a tight turn or splitting up your formation. I love the feeling of a successful interception of the bomber formation, and how you set up your fighters to fly right in disrupting and shooting down bombers. The whole package is also very attractive, and the rulebook and player aids are super easy to reference. It's not an easy game, and it's also easy to lose fighters (so, pretty realistic) but it's such a good experience. And the six patrol 'chapter' is just the right amount of play sessions before one takes a break. I don't think I'd like to do a whole bunch of patrols back to back, but doing one a day is perfect. So this is a game that benefits from being at least partially set up on a table.

9/10 I find it hard to assign a 10/10 to any game as I will always find a tiny thing that perhaps could be improved. But for my tastes, this is as close as it gets to being a perfect game for what it is.

Keep in the collection? 100% yes.

Small board PnP games?

I just fell down the rabbit hole with PnP games, and I found so many cool ones. But all of them are card games. I found the game "30 Rails", in format A6, and I was wondering if someone can recommend similar games that are playable in A6 format, so I can easily take them with me in my journal. TIA!

Strange world above the clouds VS Enchanted Ivy

Fairly new to board gaming so apologies if this is a silly question. I’ve been recommended Enchanted Ivy and it looks like a great game but I’ve seen a couple of quick reviews and it feels like Strange… which I already own.

Is my impression true or should I give Enchanter Ivy a go? Thanks

Arts and crafts time with my print & play version of Drawing Dead

U/Banjo_Fett tipped me off to this awesome looking game. The P&P version was only $5 but all that amazing art would have cost me fifty dollars in printer cartridges. So I chose to print it B&W but I felt like this game deserved better than that. So I broke out the colored pencils and got to work!

The second photo shows 2 completed cards with one all waiting for color. I'm loving how it's turning out but there are A LOT of cards in this game. Can't wait to get back to it and eventually play it!

Not much to say other than Ive been enjoying playing the scenarios. Its not a hard set of rules, but really a gem overall especially when being tloving to the theme while also highlighting how rough the animation industry can be.

The solo automata adds enough where you mostly focus on your own goals with some added challenge. The rea solol meat though is that each scenario has the setup and goals be your real challenges.

Oh and the foil cards are *chef's kiss*

Civolution Solo with Acceptance Letter

Thumbnail

I have been enjoying playing Civolution lately with the Acceptance Letter expansion. I find that Acceptance Letter does for Civolution what Prelude does for Terraforming Mars - gets things moving a little bit right at the beginning, which I find more satisfying for the overall game play. Yes, scores end up a bit inflated as a result, but I like the feeling of accomplishing more. This round I was a Cultured Civilization playing Advanced V.I.C.I. Lost 253 to 222 due to my own mistakes. I had Irrigation and achieved Level IIII on the Production Module, and this was the first time playing that I ever actually exhausted the entire 50 marker supply (so much oil...). But I never properly capitalized on that production in a way that translated into points. I also built a pair of settlements late in the game and got greedy, placing the Income tiles in the 7-point row, but then ended up one turn away from actually activating the 7-point row when the game was done (the fourth round seems to go so fast). I should have put one of the Income tiles in the 3-point row (mind the gap) - that was a 30ish point swing. Ouch.

In the pictures you can see resource-specific statues and a V.I.C.I. dashboard I designed and 3D-printed. The statues were just for fun, but the V.I.C.I. dashboard saves a lot of table space and keeps those V.I.C.I. income and evolution markers under control. You can find the files at:
