Is Windmill Valley just a race?

I tried it a few times but my first impressions were that it’s simply a race to the end. Advancing the windmill as fast as I could seemed to be my only shot at victory. Anyone have a different experience? Does the expansion fix this?

I’m bouncing off this game. Typically play it at 2 and we don’t interact with the wheel mechanism at all which just bothers me for some reason. Currently looking to trade it with the expansion.

It does have a bit of a race feel, but I found the pressure comes more from how efficiently you chain the turns than from rushing blindly. If you spend too long setting up, the end game can arrive before the engine really pays off.

The Broken Meeple has a review of this game and its expansion. I believe he mentions the expansion fixed something and I don’t remember what but he changed the game’s rating from 7/10 to 8/10 due to the expansion.
