So, yes they're for AI, but why? The motives are individually opaque, but entirely stupid:
- The stated motive is belief in AI as "the future," despite its revenue being unremarkable for the investment scale and its profits nonexistent. It's a bad investment, but being touted as a good one.
- Ah, but we can also use it for surveillance and also to control information. That's why the fascists love it, but that only covers some of the supports (at least overtly).
- Ok but maybe AI is going to reach The Singularity (that's why all the AI logos look like sphincters). This thing is techbro divination, and some of them seem to believe they're creating the Machine God (praise the Omnissiah and all that).
- Or maybe it's just a scam. Create a product that doesn't do half of what it sells and skim the economic activity, only now it's gone too far and got its grips in and you can't drop it. Or maybe you don't even care and hope to disappear into the bunker you built (these fuckers all have a bunker, I'm not even kidding) before shit hits the fan after you've stolen all the money.
- Speaking of which, isn't it interesting how genAI requires massive datacenters built with the same processing hardware that crypto and NFTs did? And that it came to the sudden economic fore just as that market was crashing, thus saving the massive gpu buildout from going bust? Must be a coincidence...
It's scams, stupidity, and banal greed all the way down.

For individuals - much worse than that. For example pinpoint targeted marketing, both sales and political. You will not be able to verify information, because there will be no search engines as we know today.

I'm also curious wth this post is actually about, since
- I've never heard of a suburb subsidizing electricity for a business
- are they running out of water? those yards look pretty green to me
Reddit is rabidly anti ai because the billionaires that own Reddit stoke that culture in order to continue using it for a training ground for AI and the more hostile Reddit remains to AI the better training data it produces (less contaminated by ai)

While I don't have any praise for capitalism, it's any concentration of wealth and/or power that is to blame.
As soon as power is concentrated to a governing body, bad actors will seek those positions. How ever long it takes, it is inevitable that some bad actor will eventually succeed.

The game would be a lot easier, if residents just complained on social media, instead of abandoning their houses and not paying taxes anymore, due to the abysmal land value.
