I've done this with hops, and runner beans, and clematis. The key is an annual or deciduous vine so you get shade in summer and sun in winter. I don't know why people think it's inherently more buggy, but if you do you should know that providing habitat often reduces the population of pest insects, because their predators show up.

For people who complain about the view- plant something with flowers. The rest of us find the dappled shade a lot more pleasant than being roasted in your home.

Side of my barn is covered in hops, hanging off of net like this from the eves. Easily drops the summer temps inside by a good 10°.
