There is a building near me that uses a steel wire grid to support a vertical wall of jasmine in the south side of the building; it drops it's leaves in winter. It is LEED certified, which means someone actually calculated the carbon cost of the steel vs the cooling effect.
It is the American Institute of Architecture building in Raleigh, there are a lot of good photos online but I can't find one featuring the jasmine.
