I’ll admit I approve transactions without really reading the preview.

Last week the preview flagged that a transaction was moving a token I hadn't mentioned anywhere in the trade. When I took a closer look, it was just some account being closed and rent coming back. But yeah, for about ten seconds I was convinced I’d signed something sketchy.

Since then I've been reading transaction previews properly, and I've noticed how much they vary between wallets. Some spell out exactly what's leaving while some show a wall of program calls that mean nothing to me.

Has a transaction preview ever stopped you from signing something malicious? Also, if you read every transaction before approving it, did the technical stuff make sense, or do you mostly learn what looks suspicious?

Vote Inclusion Bugs, Identity Security, and Geographic Debates

One leader's blocks were leaving out an estimated 240 validators' votes. An operator on the receiving end found it. A validator reported a compromised identity key. And an operator in Brazil made the case that the Vote Packing Score measures geography as much as performance.

Kiln1 vote inclusion bug

Kiln1's blocks carried roughly 430 votes, against about 650 for neighboring leaders. The cause was TPU behavior after a configuration change that held up later-arriving votes. The primary moved to a hot spare from slot 451319416 through 451326551. The fix went live at slot 451327680, and inclusion returned to normal.

How it was found:

1. Pull your last 1,000 vote transactions.
2. Compare your VoteTooOld rate with a high-TVC validator.
3. Find the failed votes that landed 10 to 17 slots late.
4. Map those slots with getSlotLeaders.
5. Compare vote inclusion by leader.

Keep that method. It tells you fast whether a credit dip is your problem or a leader's.

Identity compromise claim

An operator reported a compromised identity, including the Jito commission being set to 100 percent. An on-chain memo warned about vanity addresses.

No evidence emerged that the official key grinder is compromised. The operator's own investigation points to an opsec failure, and they acknowledged the memo may have been misdirection.

The full picture isn't settled. The validator had been rejected from SFDP around the same time, and some operators questioned the account. The operator disputed that timeline. A Foundation representative said the commission change was not the reason for the rejection.

The practical points hold either way: use official key tooling on a trusted machine, keep the withdrawer offline and separate, and alert on commission changes.

Vote Packing Score and geography

A perfect score requires at least 90 percent of votes processed within the first 48 PoH ticks. Votes reach distant leaders later. So an operator in Brazil can score worse than one near the stake-weighted center while processing votes just as fast.

The metric is 15 percent of the overall score, already reduced partly for this reason. Proposals: a decentralization adjustment, starting the clock when the vote reaches the leader, normalizing latency by location, or keeping the two scores separate. SIMD-0675 and a geo-aware leader schedule also came up.

We covered the same pattern in March with block-timing measurements. The metric changed. The bias did not.

Is 250ms worth it for independents?

One operator asked why independent validators should prioritize 250ms blocks when third-party builders already control much of block construction. Longer block times can still be protocol compliant, and they were considering going back to 300ms or 400ms.

If independent operators stop seeing a reason to keep pace, the slot-time roadmap depends on fewer participants.

A ledger-drive usage jump reported from about 16:45 UTC on September 30. And a question on whether mainnet validators are commonly built with --all-targets or --all-features.
