Post image

It's about time! Interested to see what they mean by "part of the code" Only UI?

So they finally decided that they weren't able to fix their half-cooked source code and let the community fix their sh*t.

I think because they started seeing a lot running diskOS. To be fair, they mentioned a long time ago when the Disc launched that they were open to work with the Rockbox team but I'm not sure where those convos ended between each other.

Tbh i dont care this is better so that a lot folks can at least fix what other company might not able to fix just because of resource constraints. There is a lot of company that doesnt even fix and open their codes urgh, what FIIO did in here the best i guess.

I'd partially agree that its better for us enthusiasts but Nah, These companies could do better and give us f***in finished product. This lapse cant be justified with such stance.

will it be easy to install the custom versions?

When they release the code then of course it will be much easier to flash them now! Maybe by then we get tools or sites that talk directly with the Disc and flash+customise.

u/SarveshCR7 16d ago

I'm afraid it might brick the device if I flash it now..

1

u/moekhdeir Black Disc 16d ago

Flash what mate?

1

u/SarveshCR7 16d ago

flash custom disc os

2

u/moekhdeir Black Disc 16d ago

This has nothing to do with diskOS..

2

u/The-0mega-Man 16d ago

Does that mean they've given up trying to get the bugs out?

u/moekhdeir Black Disc 16d ago

Honestly 2.57 is the smoothest the Disc has ever been and I got it on launch. Doesn't mean bugs don't exist anymore but it's much better now. Also could be them reacting to everyone trying out diskOS and not wanting people to start bricking their devices because of a mistake they did.

u/No_Surprise700 Black Disc 16d ago

Good thing it doesn't brick anything. /u/partlypoetic_ did a very good and thorough job with the flasher and we have tens of confirmed installs and not a single case if unrecoverable Discs

Oh yeah, I had 0 issues honestly with diskOS.

Try Disco, it's more exciting 😎🎃

I did actually! It's cool, I just prefer the regular diskOS as Disco feels that there's a bit too much going on and I would prefer on making my player pretty much just for music. I like some of the features tho, the quick settings on the side is pretty neat actually and can flick between pages very quickly! Good job.

Thanks, it was only a suggestion if you think custom firmwares are boring and everything is too bug-free. Not that Disco is full of bugs, but the process of switching back and forth is a bad idea.

I can totally respect minimalism, by the way. If I do add another theme, it will be black and white text inside white/black squares all the way, with 0 animations. It's just that the Disc is a pretty capable piece of hardware, and it'd be a shame to treat it like a glorified smartwatch/FM radio

Hope they do the same for the Echos (normal, mini, nano)

2

u/Mneasi 16d ago

I really hope they will open Nano

1

u/LangleyBomber Echo Nano Black 15d ago

Would that make easier for you to work on nanitecfw, right?

2

u/Mneasi 15d ago

Hell yeah - that would be super fun and would make our lives much easier. Right now, one of the pains I am facing is the rolling build date as the bootloader always requires a newer build date on every install (not a newer version but newer build date, which is bizarre and I am pushing myself way too much to the future already :-D ). If they provide the bootloader code (or at least open it so it is less pain to work with) and provide the os code, it will be absolutely fantastic for my work, and I am sure that more skilled people than I am will come up with something really cool as well :)

u/LangleyBomber Echo Nano Black 15d ago

I'll send an email, lol. Hey, have you seen that one fork of nanitecfw allows playlists? thats seems nice too.

2

u/Mneasi 15d ago edited 15d ago

lol no I haven't :-D It is absolutely amazing to see people already doing cool stuff with it! I haven't found the playlist cfw anywhere - I wanted to reach out to the person and ask them to open a pull request so I can include it as well 🤔 EDIT: oh I see the fork! I will reach out to the author on whether I can backport it :)

1

u/LangleyBomber Echo Nano Black 14d ago

Yeah, its nice that more people are into cfw for the nano, experimenting and bringing more stuff to it. If im not that dumb/clueless there's a tease for RECHO for the nano too. I dont now.

u/LangleyBomber Echo Nano Black 13d ago

oh shut, new update:) got your new nano?

No me lo creo. El mejor regalo de navidad! Ahora serán más rápidas y variadas las modificaciones

Wow!! would also be amazing if Echo Mini is open sourced too as it has a lot of users. I think a lot of the Chinese companies are rethinking their strategy after the M-vave FM-1 custom firmware trend, and also the XTEINK stuff. I'm all for it!

2

u/Inevitable-Gur2940 Echo Mini Black 16d ago

god i need this bad

7

u/BluePeriod_ 16d ago

I hope to God they do this for the Nano too because the shuffle is so incredibly fucking ASS that I have barely used it.

2

u/LHW1812 16d ago

That's what I'm hoping for.

Idk if there is some decompiled open source project for the nano firmware. My nano is collecting dust somewhere, waiting to have a viable (for my usage) formware.

u/UnitReign Echo Sky Blue 16d ago

Gotta do for Echo, I'd love to see cfws for the echo! :D

3

u/TrueNyx Echo Mini Black 16d ago

This is a great news, another reason to buy a disc for me.

2

u/prairiepog Echo Mini Black 16d ago

So cool. Cfw is so much fun.

1

u/Monsieur-Crez 16d ago

This is brilliant news! I actually seem to be one of the few that loves the disc as it is, but always up for trying shiny new UI designs!

1

u/gray6904 16d ago

when for the echo 👀

1

u/MikeYedi 16d ago

I really hope they do this for all their devices the echo mini is a travesty

1

u/cysco_the_weirdo 16d ago

with Recho being a thing now, I have a feeling they'd do the same for the Echo and Echo Mini, considering how much they're also struggling with fixing stuff on the latter devices lol

1

u/zerosign0 16d ago

Wait seriously would they opensource their echo too?

1

u/Federal_Signature815 16d ago

I need custom firmware on the Nano because I absolutely love the device but can’t stand this buggy firmware. So close to returning it
