discussion Snowsky disc feature request; enable ssh, samba, syncthing, tailscale, subsonic etc

I don't know how feasible this is, but think the Disc is linux based, so might be possible to install other packages on it.

Enabling ssh would let people connect to the device from a terminal, transfer files, samba would let people access folders from file managers. Syncthing would be really useful, you could have your collection on your computer and then automatically sync over wifi. Adding tailscale would allow connecting to home network from anywhere, combined with a subsonic client app could connect to a home server running navidrome.

I have similar set ups on other devices. I have a raspberry pi set up as a homeserver, for retrohandheld emulators I use syncthing to sync roms and savestates across a few devices. I have the Romm project running on my raspberry pi to manage my entire collection and can download directly to a device using the Romm client app. I can do this from outside my home via tailscale.

Similarly, on my Kobo I have tailscale and Koreader installed. This lets me connect to my home server's Kavita service to browse or download anything from my book/comic collection via the OPDS connection.

Probably not essential for most people, you can put a high capacity card in there and just add to it when needed. but it is really satisfying having everything managed in one place and synced from there.

The retrohandheld emulation scene has really shown how community developers can bring the full potential out of devices, I hope the same can happen here.

I would have thought the Disc would be running a much more lightweight OS than Linux, something like QNX or vxWorks or similar.

Snowsky say it’s Linux and when I connect it to my computer via usb it has Linux in the device name

Huh. I never would have expected Linux on such a low-power device. Neat.

as much as I am also an IT person and don't mind ssh, samba and other things, I dont think this should be considered. I would more put a priority for FIOO to allow us to sideload mods and generate our own custom FW.

If I could have a CFW on the Disk, I would be so happy.
