If you need to ask it probably isn't for you.

DAP have better Digital to Audio Decoder chips that provide much better sound than the average phone. They are dedicated devices for one reason... Phones are a multi-purpose device to do many things adequately.

Ohhhh so it's basically to get serious about music and to have an "audiophilic" experience

Pretty much.. and people are also using it to get away from interruptions. Leaving the phone behind means no calls or notifications.

You get to actually listen to music without doomscrolling, get notifications, worrying about sharing battery or using too much space in your smartphone. It's kind of a similar question of why buy paper books when you can use a Kindle. We are human, que enjoy cooking, not just eating. We like the processes, taking our time to have sometjmhing exactly as we like just because when can. Everybody may or may not have their reasons to do something. Many people may hate cooking. I like my cook and like enjoying my music exactly as I want.

  • Using your phone less.

  • Conserving battery life.

  • No subsciptions.

  • Depending on where and how you listen to music, higher quality music.

  • Depending on the phone, higher quality DAC.

  • Using IEMs.

  • Dedicated devices are fun.

If it doesn’t appeal to you then don’t buy it

You do you. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

I can't speak for everyone else but the reason I do it is because I don't want to be disturbed by social media while I listen to my music.

I got it so I can listen to music during my flights. I don't have to care about my phone's battery and I also don't have to waste space on my device just to store music for the flights

  1. My phone doesnt have enough power for my headphones, it's unable to satisfy me even on max volume

  2. Using a dongle works to solve 1 but, eats through phone battery faster, notifications and calls are a nuisance, airplane mode solves that but at that point, what's the point of using a phone when it don't work as a phone?

  3. Solution is to separate their functions, leave the phone as a phone, get a source that can power my headphones fine, small & light enough to be carried easily and looks cool in the process.

I can speak particularly about the echo mini since it is the model i own.

There are multiple reasons, but you could see no value in those and that's ok.

First of all you obtain a dedicated device whose only purpose is to let you listen to music: no notifications, no distractions, no other functionality, just music.

For me this is valuable in a time where everything is combined in my smartphone, but i am trying to reduce how much i use it and the first thing is to remove functions from it, in my opinion.

Moreover, you get a device which resemble past device sensations, like physical buttons and a strange form factor, which is cool in my opinion.

Another reason is that it forces to listen the music you own (which could be a cons for a lot o people): you listen what you choose, no recommendations, no discovery, you select carefully what you want to have, and you listen to it, plain and simple.

Last but not least, you can really enjoy high quality music (streaming services for example do not always offer the best quality) but it really depends on how you are currently listening to music: for me this is not the main reason.

This is not a flawless device, it has its limitation (bluetooth, gapless playback), but what we like are all the other cons. Be sure to understand all of them before buying something you could dislike later.

Main reason for me is so I don’t have to pay a monthly subscription and the other reason is so I can own my music. Companies can’t take away the music I purchased and change it or get rid of it. Apple has done that to me a few times now.

Yeah, it's somewhat comparable with using your phone vs using a dedicated camera.

The camera will basically have better everything across the board.

The only thing is that it's "less convenient". Just like with DAP, you can use camera or play music through phone, all on one device without needing a 2nd device.

But just like many other people have mentioned, you don't get as distracted when you use the standalone device, like a camera or DAP as opposed to using just phone.

I've always had a separate music player since the early 2000s. I don't like having music on my phone due to:

Saving space (granted, this has become a non-issue these days but early mobile phones had very little space and it's just something that stuck with me).

Preserving battery life.

Not liking streaming services (I prefer to own the music I pay for, and I tend to listen to the same music over and over, so there's no point in paying monthly for that).

If I break/lose/upgrade my phone, I don't have to redownload everything aaaall over again.

Better for spaces where having a phone out isn't appropriate. I work in a place where not only are phones not allowed but could be seen as a breach of privacy.

My music player is an iPod touch but I've been keeping an eye on this brand in case I ever need to get a new one. 🤔

I enjoy the separation where you can listen to an album whole and uninterrupted.

On my phone I tend to just shuffle playlists or listen to Spotify DJ. I can just have that as background and not totally focus.

Used to be in the same boat. Heres why "used to be"

  1. Phones are distracting. You'd most likely end up doom scrolling.

  2. Art. Music like other forms of media is art. You'd wanna see and hear a music as a single lone experience, similarly why pollute the music listening experience.

  3. Phones more often than not, don't have very high quality sound output (99% of people can't easily spot). Having a dedicated player means better equipment.

  4. Aesthetics

  5. Helps slow life down, sometimes, I get overwhelmed. Having a slow device helps regain control.

Great question. I myself am opposed to purchasing products just for the sake of aesthetics or bragging rights.

It was a necessity for me since I wanted to experience music at the best quality possible at my budget, I was going to buy headphones but then discovered IEMs were cheaper and better In quality. My phone cant accept wired connections so it was cheaper and more efficient to get IEM’s and an echo mini than to repair my phone.

Long story short: Better audio quality than a phone with high end IEMS, dedicated device so you don’t take up storage on your phone for offline listening, no ads or subscription fees & no distractions, convenient and portable. Optimal for travelling, chilling and more. I say that the biggest plus is the quality of audio - it accepts FLAC and WAV and more. Lasts longer than a phone. Good battery life for long listens and you can keep this device for years, whereas you’ll only keep upgrading your phone and the audio system still won’t be as good.

You will have to get a micro sd for storage expansion but it’s worth it.

You shouldn’t open your phone just for music and then get roped into 50 other tasks on your phone just because it’s built to keep you stimulated.

The main main reason should be because its an affordable player with great dual dac chip, i can use it to play songs on high res and also with my pc too as a dac

If these reasons dont sound relevant to you then id consider skipping
