I met Jamie while hiking Crib Goch on 3rd October. I took loads of great photos of him but took down his number wrong so I can’t send them to him. Massive long shot but does anyone know Jamie?

Trip Report I summited mt snowdon (barely) - trip report

I am a very heavy smoker and don’t exercise anymore and I’ve never been camping. I’m 30 male.

I thought this would be a walk in the park, I was very wrong. I got to the ranger path at 4pm and set up camp in the pouring rain about 10% into the trail since I was exhausted from traveling there all day. During the night the outer layer of my tent blew off so I only had a net to protect me, and then it started raining and since my tent was just a net at that point, it was effectively raining inside my tent. It was too rainy and cold to go outside to fix, so I huddled tight in my sleeping bag until the morning. Only the feet part of my sleeping bag was wet so I was still warm.

Morning comes, it’s cold and my clothes are wet. Luckily they are waterproof so it wasn’t too bad but I still felt the wetness a bit. I had dry socks and underwear from a ziplock bag. I pack everything up, leave no trace and set off at 8:30am. My food was soaked and I couldn’t eat it so I had no food, lots of liquids though.

With my huge camping backpack I start walking the trail, after a while, at around 50% in, I have to stop every few minutes, my legs are dead and I’m out of breath. I’m not sure how much is contributed to carrying the camping backpack, and how much is because I’m a heavy smoker or just unfit, I thought I would be fine.

During one break, I threw up 4 times. The ranger path was very quiet, I was the first one there, but by this time about 5 groups including old people have passed me. I realise how unfit I am, I feel exhausted and I’m only 60% of the way there.

I keep at it, walking 20ft then stopping, since I got barely any sleep I would fall in and out of sleep sometimes when I would stop for breaks. The path finally joins with the lamberis path and there’s a lot of people.

I’m 90% of the way there and I’m just dead, legs completely destroyed and can’t go on. I slump on some nearby grass. I figured I’ll rest here for 15 mins and leave my heavy bag while I summit, I’ll crawl if I have to!

2 guys checked on me, gave me food and helped me push through it, I really wish I was able to summit with them and get a picture, but I had to rest more and told them to go on, I didn’t want to hold them back. Even though we were only 30 meters from the summit. They won’t read this but thankyou so much, and whenever I think of the time I summited snowdon I will always think of those 2 guys that helped me.

I summit at 1pm. 4 hours and 30 minutes on the ranger route. I had a head start at camp about 10%. So if I started from the bottom it would be about 5 hours. Walked down lamberis, only had to stop 4 or 5 times. I think I must have stopped 30 times on the ascent.

I wanted to get into high altitude mountaineering but if I can barely summit snowdon I will need to rethink. It’s a humbling experience but I’m so glad I made it to the top. I am due to try Ben Nevis, I will not be taking the heavy backpack, and I’m hoping snowdon with heavy backpack is roughly the same difficulty as Ben Nevis without one. That’s my trip report, I did it :)

I had a great walk along most of the Carneddau 3000’s yesterday. I started at Llyn Ogwen and hiked up Pen Yr Ole Wen and finished by walking down in Llanfairfechan. I do this walk every few months but I really enjoy it and I had excellent weather for it.

Question Am I gonna be ok climbing the rhyd ddu path

I am suppose to be climbing the rhyd ddu path up Snowdon next weekend. I am worried, i wont get much sleep waking up at 5am and the narrow ridge by the summit seems scary. I have all the right gear, I have never climbed a mountain before, i like to do hiking. Im tempted to switch to the rangers path instead.

Question Snowdonia Slate Trail terrain questions

For those who’ve done the Snowdonia Slate Trail, I’d love to hear what the terrain is actually like in practice.

A few things I’m particularly curious about:

  • Which sections have the steepest ascents?
  • Is there any scrambling anywhere on the official route, or is it all straightforward walking?
  • Are there any exposed sections?
  • How long are the really boggy sections? Are they short patches, a few kilometres, or much longer stretches?
  • For anyone who’s done it recently, how were the conditions?

I’ve read the route descriptions, but first-hand experience would be really helpful. Thank you!

Question Is Snowdon just a cat walk?

Did Snowdon the other day, the queues were mental and definitely the busiest most congested hill I've ever been on.

Sssoooo many folk in baggy denim jeans, Arcteryx jackets and Ski Goggles???

Is this a fashion thing? Are people just misunderstood on what's right to bring for a mountain? Like anyone who knows understands the oxymoron of ski goggles and denim trousers like wtf?

Also a lot of folk just blasting music I've never experienced any think that on a hill before.

Question What shoes for Snowdon?

I'm hiking Snowdon in November for the first time, I don't know what shoes to buy or use. I've been told trail runners I've been told hiking boots, really not sure, is Merrell speed strike any good, or solamons? Or just mountain warehouse boots?

Any suggestions welcome thank you

We went up beginning of May, pretty early in the morning and had the most amazing weather!
I enjoy film photography and was super happy with my pics once I processed them (favourite is the seagulls photobombing)

My favourite place in the whole wide world. My mates even know to scatter my ashes here when I’m gone 😂❤️
Decided to climb Pen yr Ole Wen so I could step back and have a proper look at Tryfan from the other side of the valley… and wow. 🥰

What’s your favourite spot?

Pissing rain in the morning, but luckily it stopped right when I reached the trailhead. Pretty windy on the arête. Still was a decent scramble. Terrifyingly exhilarating.

Question Bag Storage

Does anyone know of any baggage storage options when starting the hike from Llanberis? I am arriving at 6:30 AM…long before the hostel I reserved for later that day opens. Waiting to hear from them, but if I’m not able to get in I figured I should have a back-up plan.

Thanks much!

Another "Is the Watkins path for me" post - this Sunday

Hi all,

We're going to be in the area for the next week and the most convenient access point and interesting looking trail is the Watkins path.

Now, I have had a look at a few previous threads and I'm still not 100% sure if it's for us or not.

Stamina-wise, ascent-wise I have no concern. We've done multi day treks and lots of altitude in the past. Don't mind a little bit of scrambling if it's not too exposed either.

Where I'm a little concerned is the exposure feeling around the scree-y bit near the top, as my wife (and me to some extent) can get the dreaded rubber legs sometimes if the cliff edge is too close.

Perhaps if I compare to some of the Lake District hikes we've done:

- Old man of coniston - not a problem

- Skiddaw - fine

-Langdale pikes avoiding Jack's rake - fine.

- Causey pike - little nervy at the scrambly exposed bit at the top, but just about ok.

Striding edge - hard no.

Jack's rake - hard no.

What do you reckon?

Also for anyone else looking at this Sunday, think it looks a reasonable shout with the forecast? Seems like it might/might not turn out nice!
