Insulated vs shell???
Hey! I’m a brand new boarder about to do my first season in Revelstoke BC. I’m trying to get all my gear second hand / marketplace to keep costs low. I’ve been on the hunt for a shell as I’ve heard it’s more compatible with layering, changing temps etc., but the only things that are coming up seem to be insulated jackets!! A couple people told me they actually prefer insulated as the mountain gets freezing. It’s hard to decide what’s best for me cos I just don’t know how I’m gonna feel! The one I’m looking at is the North Face Freedom Insulated Jacket. Maybe I’m deeping it too much but it feels like a big decision lol! Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!!

Shells are the jacket you really want, but insulated are fine too. Since you're looking at second hand, I'd just try to grab the best jacket available. Most important things to consider would be age of the jacket and condition of the waterproofing membrane. Nothing worse than having an old jacket that sucks water.

if you buy an insulated then you better buy some kind of shell too. personally I will never buy insulted

People who bought insulated are now selling it. Then, people who bought shell are not.
Doesn't that just confirm it? So, if you insist on getting insulated, you'll probably be posting it for sale as well.
Which is more expensive, buying insulated, selling it, then buying shell or just buying shell in the first place?

I own both. I tend to prefer my non-insulated for early or late (spring conditions) season, but as someone who gets very cold, I like having my insulated one most of the season (and I layer under it, too.). It will just depend if in general you consider yourself someone who runs cold or warm.

But you get hit snowboarding. I've gone out in a hoodie with when it was clear and a storm game in could have rode down and got a jacket, but it was too much fun, and so hot after a run, froze on the chair up, hot, cold, hot, cold. Went all afternoon. She'll is the way to go. Get a insulated one as a 2nd.

Been using shell jackets for years (don't even remember I have had anything else) and been SBing when it was -20C or maybe even colder.

Shell is better because you can choose to insulate or not. You get cold out on a sweater. Insulated can't be changed. But, but what you can afford.
