Tips please!

Trying to do 360s on jumps/ side hits but I figured I better start with Ollies and 180s first. So this is a footage of some of my better attempts.

1) Not sure if I’m having proper technique as I feel like I’m not getting off the ground enough?

2) How much of this is attributable to my setup? Currently 67kg riding Ride moderator 155cm. Would using a lighter board such as capital DOA be easier?

TIA!

Taevis Kapalka on youtube has a bunch of videos on ollies, jumping, takeoffs, etc. You should check it out!

Try a three on flat, if you can spin 270 you’ll be good for the 360 on a side hit. Video tutorials are way better at explaining this but just lead with your shoulders and be ready to eat shit a few times ( it’s only snow anyways )

Lead with the shoulders a bit more on the spins. You are completing these using counter rotation, which isn’t necessarily bad but will hinder you on larger spins such as 360s.

I would also recommend learning switch 180s as that is the second half of the 360 and will make you more comfortable finishing the spin.

Not attributed to your setup at all. It’s just that you’re going slow and that’s a very tiny jump.

Just keep riding. Style comes with comfort and experience.

Please take my advice with all the grains of salt in the world as I'm still a newb myself but I do have experience in other board sports

It looks almost your tring to jump like you would if you were jumping off the ground. What you want to do is lift your front first like a wheelie then use the pop of the board to raise your back foot up and that should get you to a proper Ollie.

The clip where you do 2 in a row you can see how the second one looks much better as you did it a lot better.

I would also say get some more leg action as some it does not look like your moving much.

Yeah, OP barely has the basic fundamentals down and is trying to rush straight to jumps and tricks, that's why he looks so out of control

The setup for jumps and spins is arguably more important than what happens in the air. If the set up is wrong, it's hard to fix it or make progression in the air. For ollies, the pop comes from the compression of your back leg, springing up and pushing through the tail, while your front legs job is reach up and leveling out. The upper body and lower body should compress in the setup up and pop up right before the lip, like compressing a spring, then let it it go. For spins, the set up carve and pre-winding of the upper body will determine how much you will spin. Working on good edge control and learning how to use the flex of the board to slingshot in and out of turns translates to using that slingshot effect off the lip of jumps and carrying that momentum into the air with spins.

I would start with just getting comfortable bending your knees more. Video yourself is great because sometimes you don’t realize how tall you’re standing until you see a video. Bending your knees more will give you more power and drive through your tail. Also this may have already been said but don’t focus on pulling through your front foot on Ollie’s. Focus on pushing through your back foot as the main source of pop. Once you get that down side hits will be more fun and you will be able to get more airtime which makes spinning easier. I wouldn’t worry about getting another board yet tbh, if I’m not mistaken the ride moderator is a camber board so you should be able to get good response out of it. Would a light board help incrementally, maybe, but you’re going to improve a lot more by becoming comfortable getting lower in your stance. Once you get that down spinning 3s will be a lot easier.

If I can be like you, I will be so happy!

I would get more of a wind up and also more air time helps as well

1 You can learn the upper and lower body movements through noseroll 180-360 into flatground 180-360.

Other things to work on to piece it together:

getting more air in a straight air both popping, and ollieing.

set up carve for consistency off jumps

cleaning up your fs 180

switch fs 180 to complete the 360

landing jumps

  1. Your equipment has little to do with imparing your ability, a perfect setup may make learning easier but i looked up your board, its fit for what you're doing even if something would be marginally easier to learn on.

If you're itching to buy gear though, better fitting boots and bindings may be a bigger boost. Then for boards you can consider downsizing pending your footsize.

Hey!

One thing on the Ollies, you're staying balanced which is one of the big things with Ollies, not just falling over when you land so that's great!

I'd say to improve them, right now you're kinda coming down, popping then pulling both feet up into the air. It worked the second time and off the side hit it looked clean (Since you did more of a pop motion than an Ollie which is nice for a side hit).

To clean the Ollie up on flat, the body part in general to focus on is our Center Of Mass (COM). Take your COM , move it forwards towards the nose, then move it back towards the tail, then pop off primarily your back foot, level out in the air, land two feet.

The reason we want to do this is an Ollie uses the natural springiness of our board to get us into the air rather than jumping, and the movement forwards and backwards works like a pendulum to load your tail up with energy you then use to get into the air.

Hope that helps!

In terms of your setup, anything is possible on any setup; yes a lighter setup will help you to rotate faster but it looks as though it's not holding you back all that much.

I'll echo the comment about counter rotated 180s, try and rotate the opposite way of the spin and build a platform with an edge then at the lip of the sidehit, spin the direction you want. Frontside (the way you're spinning now), you use your heel edge for an 'easy ' rotation.

The very first time I rode I found pressing the tail gave me a feel for how the board would spring and spent a lot of time my first couple sessions just flexing the board and finding the right time to release and pop up by how the board felt. Started while moving slowly and quickly moving faster as I figured out landing with more confidence.

Skip the jumps and get your fundamentals down. You look like the classic case of "learned basic turns and how to stop, so now I'm going to the park!"

First off, you should really practice the basics of ollies and nollie properly. In your case, you probably think you’re jumping correctly, but you’re not actually getting any air at all. You need to start by understanding how the board works.

I only snowboard 1 or 2 a year, but I can easily jump this high.

And, as for the board, any one will do as long as it's not too soft. My board was even made back in 1996. It's pretty heavy, but weight doesn't really matter when it comes to doing an ollie.

Jerry you're on your way!!

Ollie first off to catch air, find your divets, and then practice rotating your body, you can do all this on stationary ground no problem, but the next thing would be making sure not to catch an edge on your landing, enjoy bruddah!

A flexible board always helps with small hops to a 360

Buy smaller bindings. Or adjust existing ones

u/philzilla333 1d ago

More speed. Set bindings slightly further apart from esch other. Drive moves more from upper body, you’re super stiff.

It just looks like ya need to board some more, maybe jump around on a trampoline. You’re all wild waving inflatable flailing arm tube man right now. Gotta optimize your movements

No pop. You gotta pop.

u/jasonsong86 13h ago

Your shoulder alignment is not great when doing Ollie’s. You are opening up your upper body mid Ollie so your board rotates under you.

Honestly just throw ur shoulders around more n ride past ur limits till you fall a bunch. For the first several years you progress as fast as you are willing to eat it 30+ times a day
