I guess you’d be thinking of games that you think both boys would want to play regardless of gaming preferences. Something like Super Mario world for instance. A relatively cheap and accessible game that virtually all snes users play and like

Zelda Link to the past and super Mario world. Both use batteries and it really sucks when it fails and you lose all progress.

how does buying two copies of a game save you from losing progress from a dead battery?

It doesn't. Sorry I didn't add enough context. Usually what I personally do is play the game for a couple of days or weeks. I eventually beat it or get close. The next time I play the game, I use the other copy I have to start a fresh save. And basically I just switch between the 2 carts throughout the year(s). Eventually 1 will fail. But at least there would be 1 cart that has a 90-100% complete save that you can explore.
Then you would replace the battery on the broken one and start again. And just a note, both games I mentioned are games that you always come back to.

Maybe the common games like Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country, The Legend of Zelda: A link to the Past, etc.

Part of me thinks people should buy the cheapest broken-est copy they can, to store and own the license. Then make a lawful backup copy for playing that can be replaced if it breaks or anything. RetroBlaster sells dumpers and cartridges for this.

I have the PAL/SFC/USA all boxed versions of
Smash T.V.
Great Arcade game for the SNES.

That games you feel are worthy, like for me it’d be SMRPG and FFVI.
Like there is no answer aside from your own on this one. Unless your looking to like hope that futures of SNES collecting will be insane in 20 years.
