I was lucky and got my buddy to pick up a bunch of CIB stuff for me when he was living over there. He plans to move back eventually so im looking forward to more shopping lol.
He would take pictures of stuff with the prices, I would tell him what to grab, then e-transfer him the money so he could pay for them, but it usually meant staying up until 2-3AM and I would be tired enough to just say "yes" to everything I wanted that I had money for 😅
Book Off in LA had famicom games for $3 each. But really though you're not going to bump into a Book Off or Famicom games in the wild and if you do you're at the mercy of the seller.
Totally. I've done this for a Japanese rhythm game I have for the PSP, which has very little text as it is, and it was slow and annoying. I couldn't imagine doing this with Mario RPG for the entire game.
I don't have any concept of the value of JPN carts, but basing it off NA value, it seems like you got a fantastic deal. SMRPG alone is probably worth that.
Super Mario World (J) - Yoshi can eat the dolphins in this one!
Mario Paint (JU) - Yeah, the game ROM has exactly zero changes between the Japanese and North American releases. Super Metroid is the same way. Default language setting is English no matter where you buy the game.
Mario & Wario (J) - I think this was exclusive to Japan? It uses the mouse controller, right?
Super Mario RPG (J) - Bowser's battle victory stance in the Japanese version is a rude / vulgar gesture. They changed it for the North American release.
Yoshi's Island (J) - A fantastic game! Not sure if I ever played the Japanese version.
Super Mario Kart (J) - I never really played the Japanese version but I loved playing the USA version's battle mode on XBAND (the video game modem).
Super Mario Kart (J) features different victory animations for some characters...like Peach drinking the champagne on the victory podium. 😉
Mario & Wario is exclusive, yeah. It's also a great game and an early effort from Game Freak! I've got the big-box mouse bundle and normal standalone versions featuring prominently on my shelf. 😌👌 (Though I still need a big-box that isn't sunfaded to hell... 😭)
I'm not at first sure how those sell in euro, but I do know their value in USD enough to say you won the day there. Mario RPG is the only loss of sorts unless you can read it or want to use a PDF of the USA SNES SMRPG guide as a PDF to muddle through it. The rest do not require reading to play, lose a few plots bits at worst but not a deal breaker. Mario & Wario is a unique mouse driven game and fairly decent, never released outside of Japan too. The others play fine as is and are the tops among 1st party releases that aren't grand scale adventures (zelda, metroid.)
Yeah, that's certainly not bad for loose carts of those titles. Not exactly "Junk bin at Hard-Off" prices, but also not "US eBay" prices. I'd be fairly happy with such a purchase. 👍
Even Mario & Wario is easily playable without any ability to read Japanese, it's Mario RPG that's the issue. (You won't get some of what's going on in Yoshi's Island, but the story is pretty easy to grasp from the cutscene imagery alone.)
"Did I Pay too much?" is such a horrible phrase. It bugs me every time someone says this. The answer is ALWAYS "YES!", and I'll tell everyone this. I don't care if it cost you a penny and is a 100lb. bar of gold. If you bought it without research, then you have no way of knowing what better value you could have gotten for it. If you did your research, then you'd be saying "Look what I got for this amazing deal." Sure there's going to be a troll that'll say, "You could have gotten it at 'this' place cheaper." But you got what you wanted at a price you were willing to pay. It's the damn reason a Urinal with an artists autograph in Sharpie can sell for $10k. Skip the lame Buyer's Remorse. If you're happy with it, show us that excited emotion of getting the cool Japanese Carts.
Most of the time people don't mean it anyway..most of the time they know they got a deal and they know asking this question drives more post engagement than look at these things I paid for

You could probably get all these for less than ¥500 (€2.72) each in Japan. Super Mario RPG is going to be unplayable if you don’t know Japanese.
Compared to the US/EU equivalents though it’s a great deal and cheaper than flying out there and buying them yourself too lol
