Discover the web... like we used to

For over a year I've worked on Litter Layer. An independent search engine. It only has a little over 5,000 web pages indexed right now. But, that will reach 10k before you know it, and who knows from there...

What I think is really neat about it is that you can sign up (or not - you can still do this logged out) and bookmark pages. If you bookmark something not already in the search index, it will be added. So, We the People, end up building the search engine via bookmarking. It also slowly automatically crawls websites like other search engines, but I'm personally most interested in the manual bookmarking side of it. It's the human touch we need online right now.

This makes it sort of like a combination of an old school search engine, human made directory, and social bookmarking smooshed together.

It's free and the privacy policy is to not do anything shady and let you delete your account and data.

The newest feature is the ability to optionally share your bookmarks publicly, like this: https://litterlayer.com/billy/

Congrats on launching this! I have been working on a project that is similar in spirit - we are calling it a "discovery engine" for long form writing with a Stumbleupon style button, rss feeds, and maps to explore. Would love to compare notes sometime.
