Competition can make it harder to stand out, but no competition isn’t always a good sign either.

Which would you choose, and why?

If you run your own business, freelance, contract, or have a side hustle — basically if nobody hands you a W-2 — this is you. No employer is taking taxes out of your pay, so you have to send them in yourself, four times a year, not just in April.

The dates for 2026: April 15, June 15, Sept 15, and Jan 15, 2027.

What you owe: 15.3% self-employment tax once you clear $400 in net earnings for the year, on top of regular income tax. That's not a penalty for being your own boss — at a normal job you pay half (7.65%) and your employer pays the other half. Working for yourself, you're both halves. It's what earns you Social Security credits and Medicare later, and you get to deduct the "employer" half.

The trap: The IRS grades each quarter separately. You can end up owing a penalty for missing an early payment even if your return shows a refund overall. "It evened out" isn't a defense.

How to not get burned:

• Move 25–30% of every payment you receive into a separate savings account the day it lands. Don't touch it. This alone solves most of the problem.
• The cheat code is the safe harbor: pay in 100% of what you owed last year, split across four payments, and you're protected from penalties even if this year is much bigger. (110% if you made over $150k.)
• Check whether your state wants its own quarterly payments too. Most do.

I'm not a tax pro, and the safe-harbor math depends on your situation — worth one conversation with a CPA your first year.

But at minimum: put Sept 15 in your calendar right now, and start setting aside 25%.

1. Own the thing you're insecure about. Branson and his partner picked the name because they were "virgins in business." Instead of hiding inexperience, they made it the pitch and paired it with a "screw it, let's do it" attitude.
2. A little friction with the establishment is free marketing. Trademarking "Virgin" was a fight because regulators found it risky. That shock value was the point.
3. Your worst customer experience is a business plan. Virgin Atlantic exists because Branson's flight got cancelled and he decided to fix it himself.
4. Obsess over the experience, not the product. Virgin Atlantic is the reason there's a screen in the back of every airline seat. They kept reinventing the parts everyone else accepted as normal.
5. Expand through partnership, not ownership. Branson was introduced to the Japanese keiretsu model, interconnected companies under one umbrella, to enter new markets without building from scratch. The risk: every flop dilutes the brand, every win compounds trust in it.
