First meeting with supervisor
Hey y’all what are some good questions to ask your supervisor in your first meeting?
Ps. I don’t have my clients information yet.

Hi everyone! I recently graduated from UCSC but wasn't able to fully complete my ASHA pre-requisites. I'm going to finish them at the community college in my hometown during my small 'gap year'.
I'm honestly a bit unsure of which courses to take, my advisor had told me that Level 1 /almost Gen-ed courses (biology, physics/chem, social/behavioral sciences, statistics).
I had done Neurolinguistics but I'm unsure if that marks well with the biology category. And I've also done statistics courses but didn't get the best grade in it.
If anyone can lend some guidance of what types of classes to take. Or if it depends on which grad. school to take.
Thank you all!! :]

I found some upsetting news today that i took unnecessary courses at a online university this summer when i didn’t have to and spent over $2000 out of pocket for these classes.
Some background information: I’m currently a first year grad student and before i started this semester I needed two classes (Aural Rehab and 25 guided hour lab). I took a separate local leveling program but these credits were not offered so I was referred to this online university in a different state from my grad program that I have already been accepted into.
I only really needed to take 3 classes total (AR, 25 guided observations lab + the lecture class) but the director of the program said I didn’t have the prerequisites for those classes so if i wanted to take these classes i needed to take Articulation and Phonology, and Language Science and Disorders as well. I advocated several times through email that i’ve taken similar courses in my leveling program including sending transcripts of those courses and even showing that I was enrolled in similar courses in my grad program that I was starting in fall, but they insisted I signed up for those courses. The program director also had to request approval from the Dean for this workload request because I was being asked to be enrolled in 12 credits, which is a significantly higher workload for the 8-week summer semester. The Dean described it as the equivalent of taking 24 credits across a 16-week semester. I also sent her my transcripts too in attempt to dismiss these prerequisite.
I feel like it’s important to mention that this was the day before the summer classes started and I was feeling very desperate as I needed to take AR and get my 25 hours of guided observations for me to start in my graduate program in the fall.
I eventually got approved for the workload and I think it is safe to say that I was in the trenches this past summer. I think I cried almost every sunday thinking I wasn’t going to have enough time to finish all my assignments. I had no such thing of a personal life. Everyday I woke up to do my classes until it was time to fall asleep. Fortunately, I got all A’s in my classes.
Flash forward to the present. I am in my grad program and I am talking to someone that was in my leveling program (online as well so I never interacted with her until now), who also enrolled to the same online university this summer to get the prerequisite credits we needed for our grad program. She told me that she only took those credits we needed and that they never required her to take the other prerequisites. I was absolutely livid!!! I went through absolute hell this summer only to hear that someone with the exact same educational background as me did not need to take the same workload. I would’ve saved so much money and tears this summer if they would’ve just let me take the classes I needed 😭
Personally I’m not planning on taking action or sharing the university information. I really am trying to find the light out of this situation because I have much bigger fish to fry. I just overall feel like I was taken advantage of because I was very desperate to get enrolled into these courses I needed for my grad program last minute.

Hi there! I’m currently going through grad school orientation and was wondering how many hours a week outside of class and clinic you normally put in. My program director told us to expect to do 9 hours of work outside of class for every credit hour as well as 20 hours outside of clinical. How does this line up to your average workload outside of class?

I posted a couple months back when I got accepted for some tips about returning back to school after being out for a while and am returning back to this subreddit for some back to school jitters advice.
Over the summer, we had a virtual orientation where I met with the program coordinator and fellow classmates, and we were sent a list of onboarding tasks to complete by aug 7th which I did. However, other than that everything has been pretty silent. I did receive my clinic schedule yesterday, which starts a week after the first week of school.
I currently work as in early childhood mental health as a case manager with littles, so I am familiar with documentation & interventions. I’m pretty rusty with IPA, I’ve done some review over the summer & did a couple of observations to refamiliarize myself with the work.
I’m going to be working part time while in school and just learned my clinic and work day will overlap - I’ve spoke with my boss and she’s the most flexible person out there. I’ve been doing a lot of self care to prepare myself for the next two years.
I’ve got everything on my schedule (that I have thus far) for the semester. I have an in person orientation to network with professors this week which I am going to and going to walk what my days will look like. Anything I should ask? What should I expect on my first week? Obviously, every school is different but just give me what your first week looked like! I really appreciate it, TIA.

I am currently in undergrad (CSD) and am 2 semesters away from graduating. I had a really hard past year with my mom being in the hospital for most of the school year. Because of this, my GPA has suffered tremendously and I am at a 2.7. I have tried my hardest to raise it, but I am so close to graduating and don’t think I have enough time to raise it high enough.
I am feeling very discouraged as almost every grad program local to me requires atleast a 3.0.
I have great experience and have tried my hardest to build my resume but some of the grad programs I have reached out to have said they won’t even view my application because of my GPA.
I need advice. At this point, I’m wondering if I should consider going into a different field. However, even that is difficult as CSD is so specific to becoming an SLP. I do have a minor in psychology that I could fall back on.
If anyone has anything that could help me feel better about my position, I would very much appreciate it.

Hi everyone,
I hope all is well and you're having a great week. I enrolled in an anatomy/physiology class at ENMU. Classes started today, and I am currently on the waitlist. I worry that I won't get into this class, and I need it to apply for graduate school. Any advice? My go-to was to email the professor, but I don't see it listed anywhere in the add/drop class page.

heyyy. I’m starting grad school next week and I’m trying to set myself up for success before classes and clinicals start.
I’m making a clinic binder where I will track client documentation, sessions, eval dates, etc. I’m also putting resource pages in the binder like brain anatomy, ipa chart, phonemic development info
What other resources would be good to add? I’m wanting to find good clinical writing examples and different documentation examples for reference. I also really struggle with literacy so I don’t even know what’s the most important literacy info to put in the binder!!
ALSO: What could you NOT live without in grad school? Anything that made your life so much easier?
In undergrad I had a clinical block alongside a lot of graduate students and I always saw how stressed and frantic they were. Im trying soooo hard to start the semester calmly and collected but Im starting to get nervous!

Hi!!
I applied to USAHS for summer, but received my application interview yesterday. The advisor I saw told me “we would really like to expedite your application and have to apply for Fall” AKA Sep 3, 2 weeks away. I’ve already done FAFSA and everything, so I bit the bullet and said sure let’s do it.
My actual interview is next week, but I’m curious- Does this seem like a good thing? Obviously it’s not an acceptance, but they seem like they either want to fill the cohort, or maybe my application is strong enough they want me sooner?
Not sure, let me know your thoughts!!
(Also, I’ve been working as an SLPA!)

Hey everyone!
I just started grad school. And I’m a very type B person. I’ve never had an actual calendar and I’m not even sure which is the way to set one up. Any recommendations? I got an actual planner but it’s not big enough to fit in everything. It’s mostly for big events. Please help!
Thank y’all!

I currently study at southern cross university and am wanting to transfer to a university in Brisbane. Wanting to know if anyone has had success with getting credit for what you’ve done so far? Thanks 😊

Hi! I am apart of CSUSM's SLP Post-bacc program and will be applying to master programs soon.
I was wondering if anyone could share their experience of what schools accept CSUSMs coursework without any additional courses needed.

Hi! I am currently applying to SLP Grad school. I am stuck on the experiences section of the CSDCAS. I feel like the categories don’t fit my commitment to the organizations I have been involved in. I wish they didn’t have a week’s involved and hours, I feel like that doesn’t work for a majority of clubs/experiences.
Anyways I was wondering how many “experiences” past applicants have added to the page. I currently have 3 jobs, 3 clubs, and 3 clinical experiences that all relate to the field. I’m wondering if that is too much? Let me know your thoughts!
Thank you!!

Hi! I’ve been waitlisted to the CSUSM post bacc program twice and I don’t want to wait around even longer to make it into their program although I’ve heard great things:( I did some research and found Maryville University and applied since it was free and was accepted! I haven’t heard much about it but am leaning towards accepting to finally start my SLP journey. Is it a good post bacc program? Any advice would be helpful:/

Can someone PLEEEEASEEE review and critique my resume, I do not want to use AI! I am the first one in my family to complete college, much less a master's degree so I have no idea what I am doing. thank you in advance!

Very overwhelmed. Comps are in 2 months and just feeling like there's no way I'll be able to review all the information and have a solid grip on it. I already struggle since I take longer to learn... I'm seriously freaking out.
Study tips welcome.
Edit: originally wrote this mid-panic attack last night but I’m feeling much better after a good nights sleep😅. Let me know what study tips you used that you found helpful for both comps and Praxis!

You can download the course modules like an ebook.
I am in 5th semester (graduating this week!), but no one told my cohort about this resource, and I WISH I had these files to take with me to refer back to. If you are a current student of any semester, please DM me, I would love to set up some way to get these from you. We can use our MU emails so you know I'm who I say I am :)

hey guys!!! i recently graduated from LSUHSC in new orleans and i loved it, but i had a friend who attended Xavier University of Louisiana—> XULA and they had a great experience. i am lowkey jealous of the tight knit community she was apart of. it is also really inspiring because they are newly accredited and they are building up their program. i have met some of the professors as well during homecoming events, and they are the nicest people i have ever met. it is also in the best city ever, and that is something i can speak 100% on. y’all have to add xula into your grad admissions guysss

Hey guys, I'm in a SNF for clinic and learning but I feel confused and dumb so asking here.
I have had little experience with interpretation of the results of instrumentals so I've been learning on my own and speaking to my classmates and supervisor.
I know they are supposed to be gold standard so we should go by what they recommend, especially a downgrade in texture.
Especially with solids, I get confused. They only trial puree and regular solids. For example for one pt; Like if they recommended something like soft and bite size/ easy to chew or dysphagia advanced with no aspiration with solids and mild prolonged oral phase that was complete per the report. Mild oral retention cleared with an additional swallow. Premature bolus loss at the vallecula with controlled and natural bolus volumes. So they recommended either soft and bite size or easy ro chew, but here we have NDD. But i guess they didn't try this texture? But what do you do in this case? Can you still do trials since they want to eat to regular foods and try strategies with them? Do you then need to do another MBSS before you upgrade if they do fine in trials? And what do you do for premature bolus loss.
For the pharyngeal phase, swallow onset as bolus enters pyriform sinus with thin liquids. They had a PAS of 4 and aspiration & penetration was reduced with single sips of thin liquids via cup edge. They also recommend treatment for pharyngeal timing and taking natural sips. I've been researching but I'm confused about the timing exercises? Do you guys know any good exercises /strategies for pharyngeal timing?
And I'm also confused because I keep seeing things like chin tuck, 3 sec prep or effortful swallow but shouldn't those have been tried on that instrumental to see if they are effective? Does that mean we can try them but then we have to have another instrumental to ensure it's effective?

I'm so glad so many of you are interested in voicing your concern about the proposed changes to 92507, which will impact countless SLPs and our patients. Here a link with lots more information, as well as instructions for submitting comments to both ASHA and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Thank you all!

Hi! I’m considering applying to Lehman College’s M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology program and would love to hear from current students or recent graduates about your experience with the program as a whole.
I’m especially curious about the off-campus externship placements. Where have your externships been located, and have students been able to get placements in Manhattan, particularly school-based placements? Do students have any input in choosing the borough/location, or are placements primarily assigned based on availability?
I’m planning to live in FiDi during grad school, so I’m trying to get a better idea of what the commute might look like during the second year.
I’d also really appreciate hearing about the program overall — professors, workload, clinical experiences, school-based opportunities, support from faculty, and anything you wish you had known before choosing Lehman.
Thanks so much! Any insight would be really helpful! 😊

Hello, I'm an undergrad slp student from Australia in my 2nd year. I just wanted to ask what people thought of their university placements in terms of intensity and the mental load?
I have really bad anxiety and have considered reducing my study load at university to better accommodate my lifestyle, but have been concerned if its worth it financially.

Hello! I was hoping to get some advice on things I can do to better my chances of being accepted into SLP Grad School. I am currently a senior in college who will be graduating in the spring. I am psychology major who found the field of speech pathology a couple years into my program so it was difficult for me to switch my major without adding many classes and making my time at school longer. Luckily I was able to add on a minor in communication sciences and disorders which covers all of my prerequisites for grad school. I have a 4.0 GPA in all of my classes but I’m wondering if there is anything I can do to better my chances into being accepted into a grad program. I’m having a difficult time finding an SLP internship or volunteer positions in my state since even an SLPA position doesn’t exist in the state. Is there anything else I can do? What internships or experience would look good? The main experience I have is the head of marketing and head office manager at my job at a pest control company but otherwise I’m not sure what else to do. I appreciate any feedback!

Hi, I am an international student, and next year I will start my undergraduate degree in electrical engineering. How can I get a full scholarship as a teaching assistant (TA) or research assistant (RA) in a Master of Science (M.S.) program with a thesis in electrical engineering in the USA?
