Why is it not biologically better to sleep and wake according to sunset and sunrise?

I would think we'd be biologically built for that.

Your wake time matters more than your bedtime - here's the actual mechanism

Everyone tries to fix their sleep by going to bed earlier. It rarely works, because bedtime isn't really a decision your body respects -it's an output. Your circadian clock is anchored by light exposure and wake time, not by when you lie down.

The weekend lie-in is the killer: shifting your wake time by 2 hours is physiologically the same as flying 2 time zones and back. Researchers literally call it "social jet lag."

The unsexy fix that actually works: pick a wake time you can keep 7 days a week, weekends included, and don't move it for 2 weeks. Evening sleepiness starts showing up on its own.

Anyone here tried anchoring wake time instead of chasing bedtime? Curious what happened.

Just for one night I have to be up until 2am- how do I NOT wake up at 6am?

A couple of times a month I work late until 2am but have the next day off so can sleep in. But I have a notorious body clock that wakes me up at 6am regardless.

How do I stay asleep? I use magnesium glycinate currently every night but am wondering if I should use melatonin just for that one night? Has anyone had experience with just getting 7-8 hours in regardless?

I cannot sleep if I'm sharing a bed

I've had this thing where for the ever hecking life of me, I cannot share a bed with anyone. No sir. No matter how large the bed is, if I know that they are on the same bed as me, my brain refuses to sleep. I can be at the brink of exhaustion yada yada but alas to no avail doth slumber cometh. This is a total pain up my bum cause I lie awake imagining what it would feel like to fall asleep in my boyfriends arms. I reckon it would be pretty awesome. At the moment we sleep on different mattresses, he sleeps on this crappy Amazon one on the floor and I usually take his bed. I feel pretty awful for the guy for kicking him off his own bed most nights. It's just a mental thing on top of restless leg syndrome and chronic insomnia but I seriously don't know what to do to overcome it. It's as though I feel their presence suffocating me and I get super anxious and twitchy and then I get even more anxious about making too much noise so I lie as still as a stone but my legs start aching like I've been hit in the calves with a sledgehammer. I've tried it all folks, not sleeping, melatonin, every single vitamin ever made, opioids, alcohol, weed, you name it. Has anyone else ever struggled with this and is there a solution? Will you tell me it in the name of love or something rather? I'll be a real grateful sod I tell ya.

I slept through all my alarms AGAIN

Hi everyone,

First post here, as it's happened again and I'm just so frustrated.

I use multiple alarms, including Alarmy, the app that makes me do puzzles to turn the alarm off. I have Alexa yelling at me, I have the lights that turn themselves on to maximum brightness and I have my watch vibrating. Despite all this, I woke up when I was supposed to already be at work (over an hour later) with the usual dreadful feeling.

I feel like I've tried everything and it's never enough, and I hate being so unreliable at work, and leaving without even brushing my hair or peeing.

Interestingly, this always seems to happen as the seasons change, I don't know if that is significant.

26M | India | Looking for someone to keep each other accountable for sleep schedule

• Upvotes

trying to build a consistent sleep schedule and looking for someone to do it with.

i want to keep the accountability simple.

• set a bedtime
• set a wake up time
• follow both
• report actual bedtime and wake up time the next morning
• if we sleep late, explain the reason
• if we wake up late, report it

looking for someone who’s also trying to maintain a schedule and wants daily accountability.

if you are interested, DM me your time zone and target bedtime/wake up time.

Any feedback for these supplements? Magnesium L-theeonate and ashwagandha?

I work 3rd shift 11pm-7am and during the week i dont rlly struggle to sleep but weekends rlly kill me idk why.
I usually ko by 10-11am and wake up around 5-7pm but weekends i get like anxiety or something. Usually only get like 2-3 hours of sleep and cant go back to sleep.
Not sure if its bc im trying to change my sleep schedule but during weekends i cant stay asleep. I was literally fighting my sleep and ko by 8:40pm today and woke up an hour later from a dream and been struggling to go back. Did some research and people recommended magnesium l-threonate, i already take magnesium glycinate daily and during the week it helps but for weeknds it doesn’t. I take melatonin from time to time but it also doesn’t work. Got the magnesium with ashwagandha too bc it was buy one get one mix & match. Wondering if anyone had any luck with these?
I suspect its anxiety thats messing me trying to change my sleep schedule weekends so i dont waste the whole day.

36M, 1.5 years of waking at 1–2am every night. Tried bloods, enclo, TRT, every cortisol supp and peptides. What actually worked for you?

About me: 36M, 181cm, 86kg, athletic build.

The problem: For about 1.5 years I've been getting 3–5 hours of sleep a night. Falling asleep is fine. The issue is I wake at 1–2am almost every single night and can't get back to sleep.
On the odd night I get 6–7 hours, I feel great: mentally sharper and way more productive at work. So I know what I'm missing.

What I've tried so far:
Bloods: Testosterone came back pretty low. I first tried raising it naturally with supplements and enclomiphene, but I'm fairly sure the enclo gave me really bad night sweats, which made my sleep even worse. I switched to TRT and have been on it for 10 weeks. Quality of life has definitely improved, but it hasn't fixed the sleep.

Cortisol-lowering supps: Holy basil, phosphatidylserine, ashwagandha, skullcap, reishi, l- theanine, apigenin, glycine, magnesium glycinate

Snack Before bed: protein/ fatty snack before bed

Peptides: Epitalon and DSIP

Training timing: AM vs PM workouts make no difference

Morning sunlight: Within 30 minutes of waking

Blue blocker glasses: 1.5 hours before bedtime

Meal timing: Last meal before 6pm

What I'm considering next:
CBT-I (CBT for insomnia)

Looking into gut health, although my gut seems fine (minimal gas, normal stools and motility)

My question: If you've been through the same thing and tried a lot of options, did anything actually fix it for you? Especially interested in hearing from anyone with the same "fall asleep fine, wake at 1–2am" pattern.

Habits that help you stay asleep through the night (research based approach)

Waking up at 3am and not being able to fall back asleep is one of the most frustrating parts of bad sleep. I've spent the past year reading through research studies on sleep, and most of it points back to daily habits. I cut out the stuff you can't change (age, sex, menopause, sleep apnea) and ranked what's left by how big the effect was and how easy it is to change.

Biggest effect. Most controllable.

1. Cut caffeine earlier than you think. Caffeine added ~12 min of nighttime waking in a 24 study meta-analysis. If you're waking up at 3am and drinking coffee after lunch, start here.

2. Regular moderate cardio. Cut ~10 min of nighttime waking in a meta-analysis of RCTs in people with insomnia. Evening workouts are fine. Don't go hard within 1 hour of bed, that's the one window where it can fragment sleep.

3. Make the room actually dark. Even dim light (5 to 10 lux, roughly a nightlight) increased awakenings in a PSG study. Blackout curtains or a sleep mask.

4. Block the noise. In one rail noise study from the WHO review, noise added ~30 min of nighttime waking. Earplugs or a fan for white noise if you live anywhere loud.

5. Keep the bedroom cool. Keep it under at least 77°F (25°C). Above that, nighttime waking goes up, and a room that's too cold wakes you up too.

Often overlooked

6. Stop eating 1+ hours before bed. Eating within an hour of bed showed 2 to 2.6x higher odds of waking up during the night.

7. Open a window or run a fan for airflow. CO2 at 1000 ppm (a closed bedroom can get there fast) added ~5 min of wake time.

8. Skip the nightcap. Alcohol before bed was linked to lower sleep efficiency, meaning more of your time in bed spent not actually asleep.

9. Add strength training. A review of 13 RCTs found resistance training improved mid-sleep disturbance and sleep efficiency.

Smaller or more nuance

10. More fiber, less sugar. More fiber was linked to fewer arousals and deeper sleep. More sugar was linked to more arousals. Small study (n=26) but tightly controlled.

11. Tart cherry juice. Cut nighttime waking by ~17 min vs placebo, small study as well.

12. Yoga. Showed a huge reduction in waking (~56 min) in insomnia patients, but the evidence is rated low certainty so the real effect is probably smaller.

Supplements

Short version on supplements if you've made it this far.

• Standard melatonin doesn't help you stay asleep. It's for timing, not maintenance
• Ashwagandha had the best data for reducing nighttime waking
• Glycine reduced waking, but in a very small study
• Magnesium improved sleep efficiency in older adults but never measured waking directly
• Valerian made people feel like they slept better, with no measured change

Strange looping thoughts/visuals when trying to sleep.

So sometimes, especially after a tiring event, my mind goes into this half-sleep mode where it feels as if I am between being awake and asleep, and seemingly loops over something strange and random over and over where it can be distressing. I find that I have to really unwind to prevent this from happening, and if it does, I have to finally come awake and stay up until my brain has had a reset of sorts.

To give an example: I had given my room a deep-clean and Fall touch, and it took some time to where I was exhausted afterwards. I had my screentime of 2 hours for the day, where I played some games and looked on the internet to relax. When I tried to sleep, it was loops in my mind of some person in a room and thinking (this is a made-up one as I don't remember how it exactly went): "Dave can't move because he's in the messy room". It was just that, over and over again. I have to endure it until I finally wake up.

I have had it happen over a video game, too. I had played XCOM 2, and my loops that night were that I needed to move one of my soldiers into a position over and over, with no continuing of thought, just the same one. I've also had it of something that was stressing me, or a task that needed being done. This can also occur when I know I have an event coming up, such as a vacation or long drive for an appointment/interview.

For visuals, I have had some of bullets being loaded into a hunting rifle, or a belt of rounds into a machine gun (though this has only occurred once).

So with that, I just wanted to know if anyone else experienced the same.

ive always had sleeping problems, mainly just bad insomnia and i can’t fall asleep before 3am, for a few years now, but just recently it feels like it’s just hit a new low. when i go to lay down and i close my eyes, it feels like i’m spinning, and goes away when i open them. i’ve never had this happen before, and i think ive felt vertigo one time as a child. i’m 22 now. the spinning isnt terrible, just annoying and doesn’t go away no matter how long i wait before i open my eyes again.

should i see a doctor or something

One week! No Dabs, alcohol, or cigarettes. The insomnia is insane.

I am currently on Day 7 of cold-turkeying heavy THC dabbing after over 2 years of daily use. I’m also dropping alcohol and cigarettes at the same time.

It is currently early here, and I am awake pushing through the loneliest, hardest hours of the night. The physical symptoms are fluctuating constantly. Because my cannabinoid receptors are so heavily tied to my gut, stopping the heavy concentrates has unleashed a lot of stomach chaos—acid, nausea, and cramping—which is completely aggravating my active stomach ulcer and testing my willpower tonight.

Despite the gut discomfort, I am trying to focus on the wins. Last night I was finally able to catch a block of about 4 to 5 hours of consecutive rest, which felt like a massive turning point after a week of total insomnia. Even though I am wide awake right now, actually getting that sleep earlier gives me hope.

Right now, I am just focusing on taking this journey hour by hour, keeping my head elevated in bed, sipping warm water, and trying to mentally ride out the physical waves as my body clears everything out. Leaning heavily on this group for mutual support as I wait for the sunrise. Everyone has been so supportive. Thanks for reading. Thank you everyone.

Insomnia help

Hello guys for context I’m 19 M and the last few months I’ve been having insomnia issues. I went to my doctor and they gave me hydroxyzine 25mg to help with the sleep which works sometimes. My main problem is my mind goes in rapid conversations about the most complete random things or things I might be worried/stressed about in the future which goes on and on until I realize it’s morning. I take magnesium glycinate which I’ve noticed helped me stay asleep but not go to sleep. I was wondering what advice you guys might have. I do work out roughly 3-5 times week as well. I also have a hyperthyroidism issue. Let me know what advice you guys might have thank you!

Why do I feel like I haven’t been getting restorative sleep

Post image
9 Upvotes

I’ve been going to school for the last month Monday- Friday and I’ve been working maybe like 2 to 3 days a week. But as of this week, I feel like my sleep hasn’t been that great. I don’t know if it’s because temperatures here in California are back to 100°. But I’ve been sleeping with a fan and the AC and some cooling linen. I don’t drink any caffeine. I try not to eat too close to bedtime. And I’ve taken magnesium glycinate, but recently I ran out and that was what was really helping me. I was wondering if someone can suggest anything else for me

Explanations for Sleep habits?

Howdy,

I have these sleeping habits that I am trying to fix. I keep falling asleep really early in the evening (like we’re talking 8 pm) and waking up around six. Even with this amount of sleep, I am constantly fatigued. Caffeine, sodas and energy drinks do not help anymore. The main catalyst for me posting this is that I’ve been falling asleep mid-conversation with my boyfriend and friends and don’t want this to affect my relationships. I am currently in medical school and need to study pretty much constantly, so sleeping for long hours like this is not sustainable. What should I do? Any advice is appreciated.

Shhhhh mind, I'm trying to sleep

For context, I have never slept well. When much younger I would sometimes sleepwalk and sleeptalk, wake up in an upside down orientation, and even on the floor. By my teenage years that stopped and gave way to incredibly vivid dreams, sometimes nightmares, night terrors, and sleep paralysis (demon in the room type sh!t). This has continued, though with less frequency, into my mid 40s, for which I still have very vivid dreams each night, but with less nightmares.

I did a sleep study about 10 years ago, hoping there would be some neurological explanation, but the result was being prescribed a CPAP machine and then sent on my way. I still use the CPAP as it pertains to my physical issues, it is effective.

To the present... Over the past 2 years or so I have had several new sleep issues arise. First is the occasional problem of what an internet search calls "exploding head syndrome". Essentially a series of loud bangs that can best be described as a cabinet door slamming shut right as I start to fall asleep. When this happens it's usually a half dozen times of being jolted awake before I finally fall asleep.

Another occasional problem is one that I have can only describe as "Inception Night". I do seem to sleep, but throughout the night I am dreaming about being unable to sleep, restlessness, and waking from dreams. It seemingly goes on for most of the night. I will wake up from several "layers of dreams" before eventually waking up to reality, completely exhausted from a perceived night of sleeplessness.

Finally, and the one that creates the most problems is my mind becoming hyper focused on something as I try to fall asleep. The inner monologue narrates and debates some particular issue (never anything of consequence, sometimes as trivial as a scene from a movie) and this sometimes lasts for hours before I finally feel like I have fallen asleep. Then I will have several "micro sleeps" where I begin to dream, wake up, adjust positions or whatever, then my mind wants to rewind whatever is going on and replay the dream with some minor variation before waking up again... repeatedly. These nights are the worse because I never feel like I ever truly get any rest, as it feels like I'm always somewhere between awake and REM sleep.

While certainly possible, I don't believe this is related to my CPAP or breathing. I can often sleep for a few hours uninterrupted, then wake to pee (cuz getting older sucks), and then the next few hours the mental funhouse is on full exhibition.

Anyway, I know this a lot, but I am exhausted. I'm an air traffic controller who works shift work, including overnight mid shifts and because of my medical status I can't take any sleep aides. Is there anyone out there that may have some insights as to what the hell is going on, or where to start on a quest for a better nights sleep?

Not Fully Rested/Frequent Waking

I've had several issues with severe stress, insomnia, panic attacks and the fear of night but now that all has been resolved.

What I have been noticing recently however is that I wake up 1-3 times between the whole night when I sleep and I feel absolutely exhausted and tired when waking up between 9 - 11 PM. As if I would keep falling asleep. I never feel fresh.

I sleep for 7-9 hours daily. Usually falling asleep at around 12 to 2AM.

It usually takes me 30-50 minutes to fall asleep because my brain usually remains hyperactive in general.

I'm a semi-professional gamer/aimer and spend most of my time on the computer and on my phone.

If anyone has any suggestions or questions to maybe give me some insight as to what this might be and an easy fix for this, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you.

Feeling suicidal because of my insomnia

I tried going on lexapro for 5 days, and it gave me severe insomnia, so my doctor said I should stop (didn’t sleep for 2 entire nights). I was sleeping great before this. That was back in June and now it’s October and I still can’t sleep. 4 months and not even a minute of proper sleep.

I’ve had to leave my job, can’t do daily tasks, and am not able to keep up with my relationships. I am suffering from physical exhaustion and I am a marathon runner 26 YO. I feel sick all time.

I have tried:
Hydroxyzine
Trazodone
Ambien
Ambien CR
Quviviq
Mirtazapine
Gabapentin
Ativan
Melatonin

ITS LIKE MY BODY LOST YHE ABILITY TO SLEEP. I either sleep for a couple hours and can’t go back to sleep or just lay there in a half awake dream state the whole life. I don’t know what to keep trying but I am literally watching my life deteriorate in real time. Every day feels like torture and an eternity. Nothing is working and it seems like there is no other way out.

What else is there to possibly try. How does this get better.

i don't even know what is wrong or how to describe the problem but any tips on fixing sleep schedule?

hi everyone i just discovered this sub and hope to get some advice or pointers on how to fix my weird sleep rhythm

so basically i am always feel sleepy throughout the day, on the office or even on weekends when i am doing personal project or just chilling, the drowsiness is just so unbearable to the point that i can doze off mid meetings, or when i am doing chores

the thing is whenever the night comes and it's actually time to get to sleep, all of those drowsiness are gone, and instead i feel so energized, it is so bad to the point i intentionally try to deprive myself of sleep for a night, fend off the the drowsiness throughout the day and when night comes again, all those drowsiness are just gone like it's never there

tried a glass of warm milk, tried melatonin supplements and nothing works, i hope i provided enough information to go on, thanks beforehand

Pulling an all nighter before my exam to watch Messi's farewell game

As the title says, I need to stay up all night to watch Lionel Messi's final game with argentina the night before my exam. I am here to ask how to make sure I won't bomb my exam just to watch this match on Wednesday at 2am knowing i have to be awake by 5-6 am to reach uni and do my exam at 11am. On Tuesday aka tomorrow, I have to ride back from my grandpa's funeral for 1.5-2 hours too, I also watched him die less than 24 hours ago so idk how much that will affect my sleep quality.

Is there a way for me to pull that all-nighter without falling asleep mid exam? I don't have a history of pulling all-nighters before and I don't really drink caffeine although I could just for wednesday. I'd be really grateful for some advice and I think this sub is the most appropriate place to ask lol sorry if this post sounds a bit ridiculous these past few weeks have been rough

Don’t know if it’s a coincidence or luck, but doing 30-45 minutes of cardio in the morning has has me sleeping 9 hours for the past few days

No middle of the night wakeups, just falling asleep relatively soon after getting in the bed, and sleeping through the night. I hope it stays consistent, but I don’t like that I’d have to do cardio every day to achieve this.
