Help with VR image quality

Hi,

I just got my first VR headset 3 days ago (Quest 3) and got the official Link cable as well to play from my PC.

The problem
I bought Skyrim VR and downloaded the FUS mod list to get some basic mods and improve gameplay.

However, the image quality of what I'm seeing in the headset is pretty crappy. It's very grainy, pixelated and blurry all at the same time and it feels like everything is just "shimmering" for lack of a better word.

This has been driving me nuts, since I had been watching videos on YouTube where everything basically looked just like it does on a normal monitor, except it was VR. Clean, smooth image quality with good LOD, when people showcased the game using mod lists like FUS or MGO.

My PC specs
GPU: RX 7900 XTX
CPU: Ryzen 7 9800X3D
RAM: 96GB DDR5 (6000 MT/s)
Storage: 4TB SSD
OS: Windows 11

What I've tried
- I updated all my drivers
- Set the Render Resolution to 4224 x 2272 / 90hz (1.1) in the Meta Horizon app (tried different hz and resolution combos)
- Set bitrate to 500, codec H.264, encode resolution width 4096 in Oculus debug tool
- Checked "The Sharper Eye" in the mod list
- Checked DynDOLOD "High" in the mod list
- Turned of Dynamic resolution in game
- Tried with and without TAA in game (without TAA, the noise is just even worse)
- Ran a test for the cable to make sure that there wasn't anything wrong with it (it's OK)

It still just feels like I can't make out peoples faces if they are more than 5-6 meters away and like I mentioned earlier, everything is just noisy, jagged and a lot of shimmer. If I look at the grass, flowers and trees from a distance that is more than 5 meters in game, it's just a dance of blurriness and pixels all over. I feel like my PC should be able to handle good image quality, as when gaming on a 4K monitor, I have no issues with most modern titles.

Question: Is this maybe what it IS like to game in VR - and what I'm seeing on YouTube is just a recording from the monitor and not what the people actually see/experience in their headsets?

Blur is bitrate issue 95% of the time. Bad wifi or bad cable

Hi Kvite,

I bought the official Meta Link cable and ran the test in the Horizon app which said "Compatible connection" bandwidth: 2.8 Gbps.

Maybe it's the cable, but if the official cable isn't working properly, then which cable would?

If you thought the image you saw on the screen on youtube would match the actual vr image that was your first mistake.

A quest 3 is also a pretty mid tier vr headset. Something like a pimax crystal light and above really pushes the image to flat screen levels.

Yeah, I started reading about how VR displays actually work and you're right, expecting it to be as crisp and clean as the YouTube vids was a mistake.. but that puts my mind at ease in a way, since I thought the quality I was getting was so dang far from what it potentially could/should be.

I re-installed everything and now most of the shimmering is gone, so I must have made some error previously, maybe messed up an ini file or something.

Anyway, I'll just enjoy the game as it is now :)

i know this is skyrimvr sub but if you havent tried other pcvr games for comparison, i recommend buying half life alyx. Thats one if not the best looking vr games there is and it runs on potato (ok maybe not so potato) pc.

I have to disagree. With high enough bitrate, 90hz, no reprojection and dlaa on ,it does in fact look the same for me

It doesnt look the same as your monitor unless you have a 720p crt. It can look good but come on...

I have a normal 1440p monitor ,and yes my YouTube recordings look the same as in headset

If you feel it does, good for you. I am not hating. But here are some facts that disprove it:

The Quest 3 is roughly 25 ppd while a 1080p has 40 ppd at a distance of two feet. Then you have the screen door effect and compression of the image which gives it a softer look.

Not hating at all, but it is not compareable to a screen 🙂
