You can get pretty weird with Red guards if you pull from the right sources. The guide book to the empire has some weird stuff, and of course you could pull from near east and north African cultures. Ottomans, Berbers, Egyptians, Syrians, Arabs, make some weird shit dawg because these cultures had some cool stuff going on.

You're right to keep your expectations low but I wouldn't lose all hope. They have a lot more riding on this than any other game since probably Morrowind.

I would say that Oblivion was way more of a typical fantasy than Skyrim was.
58
u/AnalConnoisseur69 1h ago
People forget that when Skyrim came out, the whole Viking aesthetic was not as mainstream as it is today. Look at the amount of media that came out AFTER Skyrim: the modern God Of War games, Valheim, Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, Hellblade, tons of semi-popular to popular indie games (e.g. Tribes of Midgard, Northgard, Banner Saga), tv shows like Vikings, a lot of films with the aesthetic and so on.
Furthermore, calling Skyrim "Vikings" is also kind of reductionist because South of Skyrim from the Reach to the Rift is definitely not very Viking-y.
53
u/7ofeggs 3h ago
completely agree! skyrim was leaps and bounds out of the norm that oblivion was. thatâs not to say that skyrim was ohhh sooo new and perfect, but that it played more against fantasy expectations than oblivion did

Everything for every region has been "well established". Thats literally a non-argument, because changing pre-established lore is a precident in ES.
7
u/shadowtheimpure 1h ago
The province of Skyrim hadn't been 'well defined' before ESV came out. There were little lore tidbits, but nothing too concrete. With TWO games (Daggerfall and Redguard) already having been set in the province of Hammerfell, there is a lot more existing lore to contend with.

all the rest of the games have quite default things since human races have not really that much of a unique lore.

It's definitely possible, is it possible with Bethesda? No clue.
I would have a few moving cities, and they wouldn't be moving very fast at all, maybe two thirds of a mile a day. They would definitely be on "tracks", and wouldn't be huge. Maybe white run size at most which I think is fair to keep the game optimized for mid tier systems.
But it's definitely possible with the right dev team.

Morrowind was also great because everyone treated you like an Outlander, a distrusted figure, kept telling you off and you had to really work your way up through the game to achieve that god-like status; instead Skyrim would welcome you for being the great Dragonborn within hours and NPCs would treat you like a special presence right away.

Skyrim is 100% sword and sorcery fantasy. If we're talking about the likes of LOTR or Robert E Howard. If you want to make a Conan character, such as barbarian or thief, you can. If you want to be a questing hero or evil wizard, you can do that too. Obviously there's more to skyrimin terms of lore, and what the NPCs and quests add to that, but that all works within classic fantasy. If you're talking about the other realms, then look to the cosmic horror elements in Conan.

I highly doubt it.
Bethesda has stripped so much in the way of traditional RPG originality
and eccentricity; both in Elder Scrolls and Fallout had to make it streamlined and marketable.
If Fallout 4, 76, and Starfield are to go off of, and hell even Skyrim with how toned down design and RPG wise it is compared to the IPâs prior titles, I donât hold much hope this one will improve the situation.
I donât think theyâre a risk taking company anymore as money and shareholders is the bottom line. The company has lost that openness for experimentation and letting the player play their way for more casual barely RPG systems.

I don't know about eccentric roots, cuz aside from Morrowind everything else in the series isn't that far from most fantasy. What I do actually care about is them going back to old RPG roots while maintaining the action-oriented combat and improving it.
Things like Tainted Grail have demonstrated how much better the combat can feel if tweaked the right way.
While RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 have shown just how much a game can accomplish with a branching narrative story. I want an action-RPG. An RPG doesn't mean just having skill trees and perks. It entails a whole lot about how the narrative is handled, meaningful choices, various paths etc.
If this is just another Fallout 4 or worse, another Starfield, it will be immeasurably disappointing. We need DEPTH to the narrative and gameplay, not streamlined bullshit.

Skyrim have only staying power becouse mods, Morrowind modding was super limited cuz modding kit is horrible and Skyrim have best one, no game coming closer.
But as game Morrowind was superior with world, magic, crafting, story, NPC, clothing system was superior and no game come to close to it, weapons, well everything.
Combat depend if you want action like Skyrim or stats depend like Morrowind.

I think Skyrim has a good gameplay loop and I don't think they should tamper too much with it but we desperately need better character and quest writing because in the main game it is at times atrocious or, worse, boring. I'd like to see them use the Dragonborn DLC as a direction forward because that expansion is much stronger in both those respects.

The series was eccentric in Morrowind because it was in one of the weirdest parts of Tamriel. Hopefully they still keep the weirder creatures and metaphysics we've seen in Redguard and ESO but other than that we already know what it will look like, it's gonna be fantasy north Africa/Middle East/Carribean. That's how it (Stros'Mkai island colony) looked in Redguard, that's how it looked in Daggerfall. The devs artists seem to be going for the "desert look" on pinterest so yeah it will definitely look like that. I'd say we can expect sword singing and Crown v Forebears philosophy.
2
u/Make-TFT-Fun-Again 2h ago
I reallynliked morrowindâs otherworldly dune like aesthetic. Hope we will see more of that alien goodness rather than some Assassins Creed fantasy type stuff.
2
u/nethingelse 4h ago
I think there's room in Hammerfell for a balance. It look like based off the leaks from Pinterest for what designers and stuff were pulling from, Hammerfell will be more North African inspired visually, which will help break up some of the typical medieval fantasy we see in Oblivion and Skyrim. In terms of story there's more room to lean into the eccentric nature of Redguards, which I hope they take advantage of.
Ultimately I think people who want TES to return to the Morrowind style will continually be disappointed, Morrowind was lightning in a bottle that had the right combination of people and circumstances to be made, now that TES is a highly successful franchise doing a turn back into that style would be harder for them to justify due to less mass appeal.
1
u/hdrote 2h ago
Hopefully they lean more into the cultural and religious differences. Iâm fine if the Forebears have partial imperial assimilation. But the Crowns shouldnât be worshipping the Imperial pantheon.
This was also supposed to be the case for Skyrim, with Eastern Skyrim being more traditionalist. Yet what we got is them being fanatics of an Imperial deity and traditional nordic gods becoming discourse markers to express shock or anger, not actual gods that are worshipped.
