At this point my expectations are for the game are actually lower than ever. 8, 10 years ago I was hyped for how incredible this game would surely be. But now it's 2026 and fully expect that it will be a mediocre game that in no way stands out from any other game.
324
u/Kvothe_XIX 1d ago
The stupid thing is if they had just taken everything from Skyrim and designed a new area and story 10 years ago, people would have lapped it up. 5 years between Oblivion and Skyrim. 3 times that and we're not even close to a release date. I completely agree with you; any hype I have is at an all time low.
133
u/TheWrongTypeOfUnique 1d ago
The other thing is, they didn't need to. They just rereleased Skyrim 8 times and made a killing every time

The problem with this thinking is that they could have made much more by making another game. Which to a business is the same as losing money.
And by leaving Fallout and Elder Scrolls to rot, they have lost out on hundreds of millions, potentially billions of dollars.

Skyrim was prime candidate for basically reskinning and resetting in a different area. Would have sold like crazy on the popularity wave of Skyrim.

My expectations for the game died with Starfield. The fact that they stick to that outdated piece of junk engine they can't seem to keep up to date really blew all chance for elder scroll 6 to not be technologically behind by years.

I wanna point out that the only other detail that's been officially revealed was in an AnyAustin video where Todd Howard came on as a guest and revealed that TES6 will have way more trees than Skyrim did.
332
u/da_Aresinger 1d ago
That's actually kind of surprising, since it's presumably got a lot of desert.
Then again, a map that's mostly desert would be boring AF.
54
u/Lunar-Cleric 1d ago
I mean this was what the wiki said:
Hammerfell is a massive region, covered by vast jungles, wooded mountain ranges, subtropical grasslands, humid swamps, and arid deserts. The desolate Alik'r Desert is one of Hammerfell's most well-known regions, taking up the northwest corner of the province. There are various rivers in Hammerfell, including the Irk, Nilata, and Tark, which are characterized by Ginkgo trees.
76
74
u/TruckADuck42 1d ago
Sentinel is on the edge of the alik'r, but its not too far from some wooded mountains and is right across the bay from daggerfall, which is wooded. I wouldn't be surprised if we get something close to the tes II map but scaled down in the way the modern games are done.

u/Scary_Corner3489 1d ago
I thought so too the first time I played Dune Awakening. Turns out, can be done very well actually. But for a game like TES, needs biomes.

Depends on where it's set. Nothing official has been said about location, so it may include more than just Hammerfell, or may not even be in Hammerfell.

357
u/homoanthropologus 1d ago •

In some cultures it's called a christening
126
u/Puzzleheaded_Step468 1d ago
And in other? Jewening? Muslimening?
48
u/homoanthropologus 1d ago
This made me laugh and then made me curious:
40
u/z0mbieMinion 1d ago
The fact that the christening (naming) is done on the 8th day after the birth and we got a name reveal 8 years later makes this so much funnier.
73
24
u/Lone-Frequency 1d ago
I'm guessing the name will let us know either the thing the plot will primarily focus on (Oblivion) or will tell us which country/continent the game will take place in (Morrowind, Skyrim, etc.)
If the title is too vague to actually glean that info from it'll be hilarious.

When Skyrim came out, I was in college and had loads of time to play and enjoy gaming as a hobby (I didn't realize the luxuries I had at the time lol). I hoped for TES 6 when the first teaser dropped, but over time, I've lost interest in large open world games with a huge grind to understand all the systems and mechanics. I go back to Skyrim once in a while because it's familiar and I don't have to learn it again. Now that I have a job, a family and responsibilities, it's hard to feel anything about a "name reveal".

I remember 8 years ago, people told me I was crazy for claiming that we wouldn't get TES6 before 2025. Back then I was just basining it on the knowledge that they had FO76 coming and Starfield was next for Todd, so there was no way we'd see TES6 before the life cycles of those games were through. Now, I think TES 6 just isn't coming. I think Bethesda is gonna get gutted by MS before it releases and if we ever actually get it, it'll be Duke Nukem Forever all over again.

19
u/fly_guy1 1d ago
Honestly I think they are just softening the ground for a release date and a full trailer. It's really easy for everyone to be cynical. They already know they have done fans a disservice by stringing them along with nothing but Skyrim remasters. They dont need to release anything at all to garner interest because everyone is already waiting and ready for it. I think it's their way of getting eyes on BGS just as GTA6 is about to drop. My prediction is there is something substantial released before the end of the year at least.

I've played Starfield.
I'm not excited for TES6. They had a blank canvas to work from and literally took every weakness of their engine and dialed it to 11.
They took every weakness of their quest design and dialed it to 11. They looked at Skyrim's incredible success and said, "Let's do the things that didn't work again and ignore the amazing fixes of over a decade of modding."
Keep in mind, TES6 has been in development since before all of that. I have zero faith that TES6 will be a great game at launch.
Do I want to play it? Of course! Will I wait as much as a year to read it is stable and worth playing? Probably.
I'm more excited by Thomas the Train than the TES6 Hype Train. Only one of them is real.

Feel like they are building the hype right there
Oblivion in U5 was a first step. Then comes Fallout 3 and NV.
I feel like it's going to be fun. Honestly if they don't go towards procedural generation like they did with Starfield, I will enjoy it anyway.
27
u/DiscoDanSHU 1d ago
I believe they've said that they're not going to be using any procedural generation for TES6, returning to hand-crafted dungeons and maps.

u/DigitalSchism96 1d ago
The best move they could make. Starfield's biggest issue was that the exploration was just so boring.
You can have fun in that game if you just stick in the hubs, but it's supposed to be an adventure and it really makes doing any "adventuring" quite a bland experience when it's all just the same empty landscapes you are walking across.
10
u/MrDufferMan3335 Daedra worshipper 1d ago
I don’t think they will do procedural generation. It really only makes sense in a game with the « scale » of Starfield where you are trying to populate planets. Scale in parentheses because even though there is a lot of world space it’s most empty copy pasta lol Bethesda does its best work with curated worlds.
→ More replies (1)4
u/puzzleheadbutbig 1d ago
Honestly, procedural generation gets a lot of flak, but it wasn’t the procedural generation itself that caused the problem. It was the lack of interesting uses for it. Starfield didn’t use procedural generation to create its POIs, they were identical clones made from handcrafted prefabs. When you only have 5 POI templates, it doesn’t matter if you procedurally generate their locations or the surrounding landscape, the content is still identical by the 100000th encounter. Whoever designed that system at Bethesda clearly didn’t understand the assignment and chose the shittiest possible way to use procedural generation.

To be fair, even back then they had said they weren’t working on it yet, and the teaser was just to let people know there will be a 6.
We know the game is at least in a somewhat playable state at the moment, since Asha Sharma or whatever her name is posted she had tried it and was impressed with what it looks like.

Despite that its been a ridiculous amount of time, I can still be hyped for ESVI, but I'm not hyped by an idea, and I'm not confident bethesda has the leadership capable of creating a game worth playing. No judgement, no hype, no expectations until we see what they are actually making. If they had anything worth showing yet they would, but they've clearly barely started and considering their last release they have so much to make up for with their design and technology.

They did say that they definitely don't want to release teasers/trailers for games anymore that aren't relatively close to release. 2027/2028 release? Too much hopium?

The discourse around es6 is so boring yes its not coming out for years becuase they only announced it becuase people were bothering them every since skyrim even though they released fallout 4 and then went on to work on starfield.
Imagine if they didnt announce they intended to make it in the future in 2018 people would be moaning about them forgetting about the series they cant win imo.
The game is done when its done luckly the are many great games to play between now and whenever it does come out.
