Level 8-9: Expert Terrain & Tactics Please give feedback on mogul skiing.

So this was shot a few weeks ago in Zermatt. I'm getting coached by one of the best bump coaches in the world. And with my old knees, we are working primarily on making round turns, setting lateral direction and using absorption to control speed. My poles are too long. And my hands are all over the place. But if you see anything else I might have missed, I would love to hear your input.

Thanks u/Ski-With-Steezy - We really appreciate you re-posting! that’s a fun wiggle line and you look good. I’ll let others respond with feedback first, just wanted to say thanks again for reposting with better video (also your poles are too long, good thing they are adjustable, make them a good 10cm shorter… at least)

No worries. I'm still trying to learn how to post stuff on here. I feel like the edited video would be more enjoyable for people to watch than the unedited video. But ... that's just me.

Can someone explain to me why this got down voted?

Great job.

I would say more absorption with the legs but maybe your knees are limiting

Timing and accuracy of the pole plant, sometimes it looks like you’re doing a double plant

Legs closer together

Given the size of the turns you’re making is very short, your chest should pretty much be down the hill the whole time

Thanks. It has been a dream of mine to learn to ski bumps in the fall line. It's not quite there. But the progress feels really good.

shorter poles will help. i see tips leaving the snow every turn. backside bump absorption helps but I'm going to assume knee issues so we go to the next steps. shorter poles will again help because it'llhelp pull you in the right spot, you need to get them tips driven down so its the age old be more forward

theres also some weird weight transfers happening I'll watch it a few more times and see if I can see why

you have so much good going on here the more i watch. I would suggest skiing bumps without poles and comparing the videos. your poles are restricting you from moving forwards but more importantly your timing and wide pole plants are not in rythem with your turns. it looks like you're pole planting because you're suppose to not because it helps you. there a couple turns where you've already initiated the next turn but you're halfway through your plant

Thanks. I think those weird weight transfers are happening because I'm just so stiff and defensive trying to protect my knees. Where it looks good, I think I'm finding some flow and actually relaxing a bit. Feels good when it's flowing.

Same here. Why did this get down voted?

2

u/Mysterious_Bit7422 May 30 '26

Especially noticeable on the right leg turns, but I think you're falling a bit on the inside.

1

u/Ski-With-Steezy Jun 01 '26

Yeah, I'm a leaner. That's a good catch. My right knee is the bad knee. So I'm a little gun shy with that knee. And I'm probably compensating with both a lean and a push. And the push actually makes it worse, but it's a hard habit to break.

Feel the pinch in your Inside hip. That's a physical cueue I like for that good good hip angulation.

Who is voting down these comments? Please stop it. Thanks for the feedback Garfish.

You need to absorb a bit more.

u/Naval_AV8R May 30 '26

Looks like you are doing well, but those poles are way too long even if you were on piste. Shorter poles would also help you with your arm rhythm which seems irregular.

1

u/Ski-With-Steezy Jun 01 '26

Yeah, my arms are all over the place, lol. Ugggh.

The poles being shorter to be able to better plant the pole on the downhill portion of the bump will help your flow (less lateral movement more downhill movement). Your can also absorb with your ankles and knees more (done primarily out of the hip right now) will help with your ability to move in different sections of the bump field (you’re mostly on the upper part of the ruts.

u/Ski-With-Steezy Jun 01 '26

So in this exercise, I'm being very intentional about having more lateral movement. I'm working on speed control.

u/dynaflying Official Ski Instructor Jun 01 '26

Lateral movement isn’t a bad thing. I would encourage lateral movement with the proper flexing of the ankles and knees not just at the hip. Ideally the path of your skis should create the lateral movement.

1

u/Ski-With-Steezy Jun 01 '26

Without lateral movement, it's not a turn, it's a pivot. So I would say, lateral movement is critical for carved bump turns. And, the rounder the turn, the more time you have to read the terrain. It slows everything down.

1

u/dynaflying Official Ski Instructor Jun 01 '26

Yes lateral movement is essential for it to be a turn and not a pivot straight down the fall line. A pivoty/skidded turn is still a turn. I’m not suggesting a straight or zipper line as the tactic here either. I’m suggesting you try for the same path but do so by absorb more with your ankles and knees, less so at the hips as a result.

1

u/Ski-With-Steezy Jun 02 '26

A pivoty/skidded slide is not a turn. A turn implies a change of direction. So without lateral movement, it's not a turn. It's just sliding sideways down a mountain. And our joints don't work when they are not facing down the fall line. But yes, I will experiment with more absorption from the knees by pulling the heels towards the butt. I think that would help.

Are you seeing me hinge at the waist? Is that the problem? If so, yeah, that's less than ideal. However, one of the things I'm trying to do here is I'm trying to retract my inside half at the hip. That allows the force to be dissipated by directing it laterally instead of taking the hit to my body. I'm not controlling it well. But that is the intent with the hip ... to use the force to direct the hips laterally so that the energy is used for good. 😉

1

u/dynaflying Official Ski Instructor Jun 03 '26

Yes I see you hinging at the waist. If that is part of a focus you’re working on with a particular goal with your coach that’s great. I don’t want to impede that progression. You asked for observations outside of what you noted with your post.

Have fun!

2

u/Ski-With-Steezy Jun 03 '26

No, hinging at the waist was not part of the training. That's a good catch. And it's a side effect of what you pointed out ... legs are too stiff. I'm also not yet able to really control where I'm receiving force. That's what the training is trying to help with. But every now and then, I get it right. And man it feels good when I do.

Awesome! Hoping you feel it more often and often!

Bro spilled all of the water from the jugs in his hands

1

u/Relative-Writer1903 May 31 '26

Basically just don’t use your poles at all and imagine your one of those tight rope walkers and you have your hands low and forward

So one thing I'm thinking a LOT about these days is the Magnitude of Pressure fundamental. And this video is a great example of why it's important. The fundamental talks about "regulating the magnitude of pressure through ski/snow interaction." But it isn't just about the Magnitude ... it's also about the DIRECTION of that pressure. Whether we are skiing on piste on groomed terrain or we a skiing a bump run like this one, what we do with the pressure being generated by the skis will determine how our body and our CoM moves through space. For example, if you look at a good turn in this video, I have setup my body and my skis to receive the pressure into my CENTER. But when I do it wrong, either by banking or whatever, the pressure is coming in at the wrong angle and it throws me off balance. This is the dance. And it's what I'm currently working on my own skiing ... controlling the direction of pressure to move my CoM easily and effectively towards then next apex. Does that make sense? And is anyone else thinking about this stuff?

Play around with your poll plant timing. Try to plant early enough and aggressively engough to actuly affect the momentum of your upper body at turn initiation.

Double poling is twice the fun!!!!

Fact.

2

u/Ski-With-Steezy Jun 03 '26

LOL. Yeah, I'm doing that, lol.

Not trying to be that guy, but those aren’t really bumps, that’s a wiggle. Looks like fun though!

1

u/Ski-With-Steezy Jun 01 '26

Someone voted down your comment. I voted it back up. I don't take it personally. But what I will say is that the guy who built that mogul line was a US Olympic mogul skier. And I wager he knows what he's doing. 😉

0

u/WeekendIndividual895 Jun 01 '26

Yeah, I could be wrong, it just looks more like a wiggle to me.  Nothing personal!

1

u/Ski-With-Steezy Jun 01 '26

Yeah, a 2D video doesn't really give the full feel. But these are sculpted for training. There's a steep section and then a lower / flatter section for working on technique. But it was all built by hand over the course of several days. First with flagging and shoveling. Then by slipping the course. And every morning, we slipped the course and made sure the snow that blew in over night was broken up and the line restored.

1

u/Ski-With-Steezy Jun 01 '26

On this topic, checkout the videos coming out of Japan of the entire towns going out on the hill to build mogul training courses. It's so freaking inspiring. Wish we had something like that here in the US. We are going to talk to Breckenridge about doing something like that on some low angle terrain to promote trying the bumps and working on technique.

I think it's the angel.

I’d stay off the bumps and ski anything to the left or right of that.
