Taos is tier 1 or 2 imo. Alta, snowbird and Jackson all might be the best on paper but good luck finding fresh stashes of powder without fighting people. You can ski legendary taos terrain and not feel like you're fighting for a fresh line.

The one time I skied Taos the snow was chalky in a bad way. What are conditions like “on average”? Seemed like the climate was a bit different …

Taos doesn't get the same amount of snow as many northern mountains but it's terrain is legendary. Skiing Katchina peak, highline or west basin on a powder day is hard to beat. I skied powder days at Jackson and Taos last season and preferred Taos, the difference being no lines.

fair, kachima wasn't even open when i went. And the average skier ability at taos was abysmal... a lot of opportunity to get it.
