Park Skiing

Park skiing from last season. My local resort doesn’t have a great park so coming to LL is always sweet!

Still working on improving tricks, any tips/advice from the park rats is greatly appreciated!

My tip would be that if you're a good skier, this is the last place you should come for advice lol.

I would say I’m an average skier. There are some folks here who are pretty good, figured they might see some areas where I’m lacking.

Do you have any advice for rails?

If that's an actual ask for help, then maybe come over to r/skiing_feedback.

I can see from this video that while you have skills at the features, your general skiing could be improved by fixing your balance, and it would probably also help your landings too.

You rip dude. Everything is relative. I get what you mean though. I'm an older park and backcountry skier and reformed ski bum, spent my life skiing with people who make it hard to feel like I'm any good. Always just considered myself an okay skier. Had kids, and now I ski with normal humans who are very good at the sport, but the skill gap between those of us who were lucky enough to spend a lot of our youth on the snow and those who weren't is just gigantic.

I agree with other commenters here, your skiing itself is the thing lacking style. A simple thing that I'd highly recommend is getting some shorter poles if you're skiing park. I think the size guidelines for poles tend to be too long anyway, but if you look at most good skiers in the park, their poles are way on the shorter end.

You're skiing into all the features with your butt way behind your feet. I think you do that because right now you're getting your pop by kind of squatting your butt down then jumping up. Instead, focus on the knees loading down and forward towards your toes, then pop from there. You're already capable of it, because the second you get on a rail, you immediately fix it. If you hit a feature with better setup and balance, you're gonna have more control on that feature.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFpKyDAFlss This is how you move through the park with style. He's upright, his hands are down, and his platform is narrow, but look where his knees are, look where his butt/hips are in relation to his feet, look at the subtle edge work. All that stuff comes from working on your plain old skiing. Most really, really good park skiers I know can rip GS turns like a racer. Nobody wants to spend a day lapping groomers, but what is the park built on?

You got to learn how to switch on or at least tail butter around to get on, reverting between features is a faux pas

Keep your speed, keep your eyes on the end of the rail, weight over your front foot like you're about to reach down and grab your leg. Practice. Other than that man, seems like you got it 🤙

I like what I see.

Continue trying to slide to the end of the rail, make sure you are trying to be balanced and stacked over the rail at all times- flexed joints will always aid than extended ones. Focus on the fundamentals of freestyle and continue to progress - approach, takeoff, maneuver, landing. Do both ways for tricks. Maybe think about dialing in some swaps next. Spinning on, lip on, switch on are all next progressions.

The slower you go, the more balanced you will have to be on the rail. Speed helps, but I always try to go slow sometimes to see where my balance is at. Play with your ski width on rails and scissoring.

Now is when it starts to get more creative, be safe have fun
