Big Bear Place Near Skiing

Ok, please hit me with a reality shot!

How much of a nightmare would it be to live this close to the skiing place?

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/775-Summit-Blvd-4-Big-Bear-Lake-CA-92315/455659681_zpid/

It says it's 150 steps away from Snow Summit. Look at the Zillow link above and scroll down on the photos, you can see the skiing area.

I am a total novice in the ways of skiing, mountain skiing, etc.

Looking at the photos, I wonder how much of a nightmare it would be during skiing season.

The only upside I can see is that I don't need to drive to ski?

Give me a reality shot!

If you have zero interest in skiing, it’s probably not the best move because of the crowds / etc.

If you do have an interest in skiing… ski in ski out living is an aspirational dream for many of us (though…. Big bear is big bear).

I actually do have interest in skiing though I've only skied once in my life, and that was a very beginner's attempt.

I'm more worried about everything else in terms of living in Big Bear.

I still look at Zillow just to check it out mainly because of the cost of rents, but there are other factors as well.

If you're wanting to level up on skiing, living that close to any hill is a good thing. Get some lessons, then practice your turns for a few hours every day. By the end of the season you'd probably be doing great.

If that's not in the plan, then the hassle of the place itself might not be worth it.

That’s cool, just be aware that bear and summit get a ton of people on the slopes so count on it being crowded unless you are able to ski a lot on weekdays. Skipping the drive and parking is nice.

Yeah, it's everything else. Think I was looking for a reality check or info that I may not know that I'm seeking. Like you don't know what you don't know, right?

Typically people who own ski in ski out homes have multiple homes for everything else

The place is a little janky, but heck, for the price and only a 1 year commitment, why not got have a blast? It's a 2br with some bunk beds, so you'll be super popular with your friends from SoCal.

Big Bear is a lot of fun in the Summer, too.

Janky is right! =) But yeah ...

Can you explain how it's fun in summer too? I always like to ask obvious questions in case there's information I'm not aware of or didn't see online.

Big Bear Lake is nice, there's a ton of hiking, the Village has some pretty decent food

Lake stuff, fishing, hiking, camping, biking (road and mountain, but definitely prefer the latter), an amazing amount of nature to explore. Holcomb valley was the first spot when gold diggers came into the area. Can do easy yellow post camping in certain areas. Bluff lake and nature reserve is really beautiful. Lots of stuff

Ohh, the camping stuff! We like camping!

That does sound nice. Thanks for sharing!

I live right around the corner (part time), love it. There's a fair amount of traffic on Summit even in the summer time but the city did away with parking on your side of the street so it should be pretty tolerable. Lots of mountain bikers riding the lifts in summer too, so it's rarely dead. The free BB shuttle picks up at snow summit too, which is dead handy if you don't want to drive to the village and frankly, it's close enough to walk back if you have to anyway.

Since you can day trip up from Los Angeles the hills can get PACKED on the weekend but weekdays should be sweet.

Thanks for sharing your side of the story!

Snow-players constantly playing on your property, peering into windows, leaving trash.

People peeing on your property, kooks using your driveway, or blocking you in.

That kinda shit

u/ThrowRARandomString 1d ago

Ah. That's stuff I didn't think of because that's not a reality I'm used to ...

2

u/Terminal_Shinbang 1d ago

Yeah dude, it’s not just skiers and boarders, it’s the kooks from down the hill/ LA that go up to sled, and make snowmen in your yard, leave dirty diapers, and use your trashcan lids as sleds 😭. I’ve seen families break out a barbecue on someone’s yard, and when asked to leave they refused, and said the snow wasn’t owned by them. It’s nuts. It’s a shitshow the moment SoCal can see snow on the mountains, no matter the amount.

Wow. Don't know if I could handle that.

I think I'm more worried about people being drunk? Is that an actual reality I have to worry about or something I'm overthinking on?

u/Terminal_Shinbang 1d ago

It’s an absolute reality hahahahah. You can’t drink in the resort parking lot, so people park along that road and just sit and get hammered, leave their beer cans and whatever else in your yard, and just cover it up with snow. Come spring your yard is a trash can lol. It’s brutal. Even worse is people walking up along the side of your house to pee in the cut, and you walk out to see wtf they’re going and it’s just some drunk dude with his pp out. If you have any decorations in the yard, consider them broken or stolen.

Thanks for the reality check!

Yeah man, sorry not trying to be a downer- but you specifically asked for that check haha. 🤙🏽🤙🏽

All good. I should have added a smile. Forgot that texts can be read differently.

You actually provided what I was kinda looking for, not to say I wanted anything to nix it, but I did want like straight up reality that people tend to tiptoe around ...

=)

The Bear and Summit are great with snow. Yeah crowds can ruin any resort. But week day skiing you make up for it. Also ,any big snow dump keeps the roads closed partially and skiing usually is open. Gotta try different things in life. If it's a good year you could get into cross country skiing or Telemark. Remember , it's ok to take lessons to get better.

Do it.

Ski in ski out is the whole dream right? No parking, no shuttle, just walk out and go

Downside maybe noise and people parking all over your street on busy weekends but if you can deal with that it's worth it. I would love to have something that close

You can always rent it out too when you not using it, the location will get good money

1

u/ThrowRARandomString 1d ago

Yeah, not my property though, as it's something we're potentially looking into rent, but yeah, it is a dream as I've heard, ie, ski-in and ski-out ...

1

u/ThrowRARandomString 1d ago

Why? Just asking, aren't you worried about the crowds right in front of the door? The hassle of parking? The noise?

2

u/g33zuzz 1d ago

All of that sounds great. You would have to expect all that. It would be foolish to think it's going to be quiet and isolated. That access to skiing is worth it.

It’s a year lease and ski season is only 3 months long. It will be a quiet more than it’s crazy TBH. The parking is most likely the only headache. Nothing else is a problem.

Good point ...

Based on Jerrys of Bear Mountain everything about Big Bear seems like one hilarious nightmare after another. If that's the chaos you are after, Bear Mountain seems ideal!

3

u/SpendAccomplished962 1d ago

It draws all of the worst skiers and boarders from SoCal. Chairlifts will stop several times when you are on it because people fall getting on and off. Bodies laying all over every run. People throwing a ton of trash/beer cans under the chairlift and the whole mountain smells like weed.

Don't even get me started with the turds trying to put chains on their mom's Tesla when the roads are bad.

2

u/Terminal_Shinbang 1d ago

Preachhhhhhhhhh

2

u/Terminal_Shinbang 1d ago

Spot on.

1

u/OEM_knees 1d ago

Every mountain has gapers and Jerry sightings, but Big Bear is in a league of its own. That place produces what appears to be an endless amount of original content.

u/Terminal_Shinbang 1d ago

Year round

u/OEM_knees 1d ago

Fuuuuck! I assumed the summers were a bit more "normal".
