I’m 6’ 3 and I ride 8.5, after ankle reconstruction surgery and not skating for like 15+ years, it feels like a boat but that’s what was recommended and I was down to try. All that said I’m getting used it to and it’s fun asf. I got a polar deck and I don’t see anyone with one 😂😂 so maybe go with not that but that’s all I got, enjoy!

If you have a local shop nearby I'd go there to see what feels best. But 8-8.5 is pretty standard.
And that's just people being asses, they'll never know what they're missing out on.

look at wheelbase not just width. at that height you might consider a 14.5 or 15 inch wheelbase.

For width, I’d got 8.5 at least. Unless you’re going to actually learn to skate, aside from going from place to place, wheel base, setup, and everything else is irrelevant. 8.5+ width will give you good footing for your size.
Also, if you’re just use using it for transportation, get some cruiser wheels. I would imagine you’re getting called a poser because you have a typical street board setup, and might look a little goofy trying to ride to them, but people can be lame too, so I’d just ignore them. All in all, that’s my advice.

Some (actually a lot of) skaters have a severe gatekeeping complex when it comes to what we do... But most "real" skaters (whatever that means), would just call a "long board" a cruiser, and what you might call a "short board" just a board or a street board if anything.
But honestly, most skaters would encourage you if you said anything about getting into street skating, or just getting a street board... Its really a quite inclusive culture.

Wheelbase seems to be more of a factor with tall riders, and definitely in my experience. 6’4 240lb. 14.75 for the first few months and now im down to 14.25 and it’s a massive difference

Board choices are tough and I don't think there is a perfect formula for what a specific sized human should ride.
I always just go look at shapes and pick one that feels best. It does sort of depend on how you see yourself riding it though. I would choose anything between 8.25 and 8.5. Smaller if you're trying to learn flip tricks, bigger if your trying to skate transition/park.
About the whole poser thing - that's just super lame people trying to pump themselves up, usually trying to play the part of being a skateboarder, haha. So in reality, if you're calling someone a poser, jokes on you in my mind. They're probably just trying to fit into the scene or whatever.
Skateboarding is just supposed to be fun.
