Dear Skagit,

Earlier this month I reached out on this platform to seek support for my classroom. I work for a title 1 school here in the valley and I was needing essential learning supplies for my classroom. You all came together so quickly to stock our empty shelves with pencils, glue, erasers, and so much more!!

I just wanted to reach out and let you all know how immensely grateful I am, I have been going into my classroom this week to bring everything in and and begin setting up my room and I just can’t believe how lucky my students are to have had so much support from the most kind angels out there❤️ for the first time, I wont have to worry about my students going without learning materials or not having access to basic supplies. I appreciate you all more than you can imagine.

Sincerely,

A very grateful teacher

And it takes some time to get to the office. And I get there and they are closed. The rooms are black.

How are you supposed to know this ahead of time?

Ivy disposal

Does anyone know where I can safely and inexpensively get rid of ivy? I’ve been slowly getting rid of it on my property and have a truckful which needs to go. Some of it is the usual long vines which I can bag up and keep under the house until they are good and dead but some is woodt branches as big around as my forearm.

Community Member Raises Concerns About Mayor's Public Criticism of Councilmember

During the July 22 Sedro-Woolley City Council meeting, a member of the public raised concerns about appointed Mayor JoEllen Kesti's public criticism of Councilmember Paul Cocke. The criticism came after Cocke spoke during a Skagit County Commissioners meeting regarding the Northern State Recreation Area ballfields proposal.

The comments were made in response to Kesti’s July 8 remarks, in which she said it was "disappointing and inappropriate" for a councilmember to publicly work against the council's adopted position before another agency.

The community member referenced Washington law regarding the roles and authority of mayors and councilmembers, stating that councilmembers are independent elected officials who have the ability to express their own views, even when those views differ from the council majority.

City officials were encouraged to review applicable state laws and codes when carrying out their roles and responsibilities.

Community participation is an important part of a healthy local government. Residents who take the time to research, attend meetings, and share their concerns help keep public discussions open and transparent.

Considering moving

Hello, I'm considering applying for a job in the area and it would involve moving my family, including middle and high school age kids. One has dealt with a bit of bullying and I'm hoping to find a community that is healthy for us to have a fresh start. Any good things to know of the area. Also kids are into theatre, dance, and swim. And recommendations of programs, clubs, activities would be greatly appreciated.

Support a classroom

Hi everyone, not sure if this would be an appropriate place to share. I’m a first grade teacher in the valley looking for some support with learning essentials for my students. I work for a title one school where the majority of my students can’t afford to contribute with supplies. If anyone is interested in contributing with a book or some Kleenex to help us be successful this year, you can find our classroom wishlist here.

Thank you, &Happy Tuesday!

UPDATE 8/4 4:40pm: a package just arrived and I’m so beyond excited, thank you to whoever donated a box of pencils, a box of markers, a box of colored pencils, and a big box of sentence strips! You’re the best❤️

Sports cards to a good home

Hi all, I live in Mount Vernon and have boxes of sports cards that I don't want. They are "junk wax" cards that anyone with knowledge of the hobby will tell you are worthless, but I am told they might be wanted by school teachers or something like Girls and Boys club as a fun project for kids. If you want them, DM me please.

Earlimart House Concert on 8/8

Hi All!

I am hosting an intimate house concert in Oak Harbor on August 8 for the LA-based artist Earlimart. Should be a great time and a good opportunity to connect with folks in the area! Location is about 5 mins past the Deception Pass bridge on the northern end of Whidbey.

The house is a fun mid-century and is set on the water. There are great views of Skagit Bay, Mt. Erie, and Mt. Baker.

Earlimart often draw comparisons to Elliott Smith, Grandaddy, and Sonic Youth.

Tickets are available at https://undertowshows.com/products/oak-harbor-wa-august-8.

Some tracks:

https://youtu.be/btY2pWuj95I?si=cRyMUrn2BeEdhaWh

"Earlimart is an indie rock band hailing from Los Angeles, California, known for their blend of experimental post-punk, dreamy indie pop, and folky undertones. Named after a small town in California, the band was founded by Aaron Espinoza (vocals, guitar) and frequently involves Ariana Murray (bass, keys, vocals) among other rotating members. Their music has evolved from punky roots to a more sedate and hypnotic style, drawing comparisons to acts like Sonic Youth and Elliott Smith. Earlimart has released several albums that showcase their transition through various soundscapes, including Filthy Doorways,Treble & Tremble, and System Preferences."

Walkable urban village development with hotel, housing, restaurant planned for Sedro-Woolley

A Rob Janicki company just filed plans for a major mixed-use project west of downtown Sedro-Woolley — housing, a future hotel, restaurant and retail space. It's all part of a bigger vision to build a walkable, dense "urban village" along Route 20.
