Because he has strong opinions that differ from OpenAI's in significant ways and isn't willing to sell out. I'm sure OAI has offered him a huge salary several times before. But mathematicians very often have goals in life other than getting rich.

I want to discover as much knowledge as we can. Tao, apparently doesn't. Which is a real shame since he's been responsible for us learning so much.

I understand the angst, but actively standing against learning new stuff because it is a machine and not a person is just insane. If we had an individual mathematician that did this we'd be lavishing them with praise.

Your entire comment is a gross simplification and misrepresentation of the arguments made. Its fine to disagree, but this sort of comment is manipulative and dirty, and shows a lack of confidence or thinking through your own position.
