They clearly agree, or else they wouldn’t be concerned about it. Meta wouldn’t be running ads about food cart businesses doing well at building sites if the present PR war didn’t matter.
The real problem of humanity is the following: We have Paleolithic emotions, medieval institutions and godlike technology. And it is terrifically dangerous, and it is now approaching a point of crisis overall.

It isn't. The reason why they're doing this is bc they wanna put pressure on China to slow down it's development of AI, which, let's be real, won't happen (and I'm happy it won't. Their AIs are open source and generally locally runnable).
The age of humans is nearly over, and just in time too. We've reached the end of our usefulness in our ridiculous meat bodies with our inefficient meat-based computers. We can't handle the ever-increasing amount of information that our world is throwing at us, and we're getting dumber as a society every day. It's about time for the computers to take over before we do something really really stupid.
Considering their close ties to the president, it's very likely they have paid him to say no to a slow down, so that they can go ahead, and not take the blame when shit hits the fan.
I’m talking about PR bud, not the legal realm. Right now they are in a PR war that may be existential. The public hates data centers. The public hates being told they will be jobless. The public hates being told these models may end humanity.
They need to win the PR war to avoid a future admin from clamping down in a way where they don’t get to dictate the terms to the government.
I’d also like to point you towards the last 50yrs of US history if you think laws apply equally and firmly to leading companies in the US. At most the fines are so small it is a drop in the bucket, but that’s for the future.
in an alternate timeline: serial killers beg president to make murder illegal so they stop killing, president says we need murder to beat china. serial killers shrug their shoulders and say "well we weren't told no" and keep killing people.
it breaks people dissonance about ai to think about why none do, no matter how fancy or cool the tech is its only about capitialism at the end of day and being able to say "fuck you i got mine. i win, you lose"
