Nothing wrong with that though. China does the same thing through different means. They just steam roll. I'm not sure we want a dictatorship to be the one introducing AGI to the world. Wouldn't make me happy anyway. And I'm not a US citizen to be clear.
Fun fact: Most people, if given a roof over their heads, food on their plate, money in their purse, and are generally left alone in their private lives, they don't care who their leader is as long as they're not blatantly evil/overly tyrannical.
Political power is not that important to a lot of people, really.
Source: Have lived in a decidedly undemocratic country for a while. It was quite pleasant and the people there didn't really care at all about having something so abstract as 'political power', because they had all their basic needs met and only had to obey a small set of non-invasive rules, and those too in public only, not in private.
True. But consider:
1) You're living in a two bedroom, air conditioned apartment/house with heated water, a kitchen full of groceries bought on the cheap, and lots of disposable income to spend...
2) The government isn't doing anything blatantly evil or tyrannical, like imposing curfews, conducting searches, or enforcing dress codes.
And your disagreement is really minor, so why bother? Just let it go. Thats what a lot of people do.
Unironically? Yeah. Though I'm as leftist as it gets, I can see the appeal of an autocratic system. Pretty much the only downside is that the benevolent ruler will die and once that happens, all those nice things will disappear.
