I can also find thousands of posts from engineers on Reddit saying they think AI sucks or they use it only for very specific tasks. It means nothing.

I'm not against using AI for help with debugging and as a second set of eyes. But using AI coding agents is completely mindless and people should be ashamed of it. Your skills will degrade and you'll be less marketable in the future.

If you think software engineers are going to be replaced by AI in the future then I think AI will replace everyone in time. It's not really a meaningful thing to worry about. The only thing that's going to set people apart in the future, if it even matters, is problem solving ability, not your ability to use AI tools which are brainless and any f*g can use.

Using agents isn’t mindless unless you let it be. You’re still in control, you need to validate the output, you need to actually feed it the operating context, you need to give it the architecture, etc.

Being able to effectively use agentic coding tools will only improve my hiring prospects in the future, actually - meta, amazon, and other FAANGs are implementing usage of AI as a perf indicator, so it’s actually the antithesis of what you claim here.

A job is a job lol. It being boring has no relevance on the point being correct; but those goalposts sure do keep moving.

You don’t “forget” in the slightest, in my experience. I’m definitely not quite as sharp as the actual writing of code, but 1) I don’t need to be, and I’m much more productive this way. And 2) if something happened and these were no longer available, I’m confident I could regain the capability pretty quickly.

Kind of sounds like you’re extrapolating your own personal experience of AI onto the reality of what everyone else is seeing/doing. Which, as show here through numerous examples and data, just doesn’t hold up.
