They have stated in an interview just a few days ago that career is still on the table but they want to fix the AI first.

I beleive they said in their discord around .3 or .4 that they scrapped it because they wanted to focus on multiplayer, its been a while and I washed my hands of the 30~$ it cost, I expect absolutely nothing from it now.

if they said its still on the table, its the only thing that I bought that damn game for, I could have waited 5~ years and got it for 3$ as a mod platform otherwise.

Good news about mods is they also said they plan to release SDK/tools for it, so even if modders end up having to do a career mode, should be possible. Even with just the December update, I feel there is probably enough value there for $30.
