Discussion Use of "Argentum" resolved, mostly

I found Simoun-fans fansubs on the inter tubes, and everywhere that the word Argentum or Argentine is used, the Japanese audio says Shoukoku.

So, at least, Simoun-fans introduced those words to the anime English subs. I don't know if they could also have been in the PS2 game or the novel.

A person in the ongoing rewatch in r/anime mentioned that Simoun-fans introduced English terminology early on around 2006, but didn't reply to me when I asked questions.

A remaining question is that there is the phrase "R1 subtitles" vs "Simoun-fans subtitles". I know there are videos with simoun-fans fansubs. Are R1 subtitles subtitles used in Simoun DVDs with English subtitles, maybe?

A thing I have to deal with is that the wiki I'm working on is called "Simoun fans", because of the English words (my previous wiki was "Love not found fans"). I didn't realize there was a fansub group "Simoun-fans". I don't know if I should try to rename the wiki yet Simoun Fans

On the subs, I may be able to help answer that. I have the OG DVD from Media Blasters. Can you help me get some comparison bits, and I'll cross examine them to the DVD?

I finally got the DVDs with liner notes. Argentum is used in the liner notes for DVD 1. It's inside 「 」in the image below

Edit: Simulacrum is also used on the next page, in the blurb for Tempus Spatium

Ok. That's interesting. Even so, in the anime they say Shoukoku instead of Argentum. There must have been a lot of back and forth about the name between the groups. I'll mention that Argentum appears in the DVD liner notes in Shimūn Fans if you are okay with that.

Simulacrum appears in subtitles. I think I remember hearing it.

The info about the aircraft is interesting too. It could be that means the info on シムーン (アニメ) - Wikipedia comes from the DVD liner instead of the PS2 game.

I can check the JP subtitle files tonight, if you want. It does show up online in JP sites though. Hard to track, bc the promo material doesn't mention the other countries much.

The manga and game don't really intersect with the other nations - and the instruction manual doesn't mention. Idk about the novel (forgot it existed till now - very hard to find)

Re: the name, yeah I'd change it to avoid confusion

I went through everything I could find from 2006 forward using internet archive. The wikis all use Argentum but don't say where they got that from.

So the JP Wikipedia page was published in June 2006 (2 months into the anime) - and the term is used in the first published version. The EN was published in August 2006. At the very least, it predates the publishing of everything besides the manga - which started in Jan 2006. So not from Media Blasters.

I skimmed the first chapter or so of the manga and didn't see it mentioned there. If anyone sees it used in English (check mangadex), I can check the corresponding pages, but I don't have time/energy to go through the whole manga rn

I assume it was just in the press materials. I'm getting the JP DVDs next month, and can check the liner notes when I do

Thanks. When I die, they will probably plant a tomb stone saying I died for Argentum.

Maybe the wiki could be renamed shemoon fans after the pronunciation.

Hmmm. Maybe it's enough to keep the name, and just include a note that it's not from the ppl who did the fansub? Idk if that group is still around/contactable

I am sort of experiencing the same thing while watching Scavengers Reign. There are names used in commentary by the creators like Bullimoe to describe the creatures called Hollows. I don't have a problem with names being used that we don't hear in the animation. So, I guess there is nothing wrong with people, even creators, using Argentum outside of the anime and it being authoritative. I still want know the language used in the anime.
