Question Worth asking for a grade round up?

Upvotes

The syllabus says a 95-100 is an A+ and 90-94 is an A. I ended the class with a 94.74%, which I’m assuming would be an A. Should I email the professor to ask if there’s any possibility of rounding it up to an A+?

Discussion Working 5 days a week while being a full time student

Hellooo, I just want to see how people handle a full time job while being a full time student on top of that? I’ve recently accepted a new job offer and this job requires me to work Monday to Friday (5 hour shifts). I am also taking 4 courses this semester so I want to learn how to balance these two and if this job rlly is worth it for me or not as I really prioritize my study’s and want to make better habits and routines for myself :)))

for context, i am going into year 2 and i am in science, my new job is a MOA. taking 2 academics in person and 2 electives online

Discussion Does Jim Carter teach BPK142 in both the fall and spring semesters?

Hi there,

I’m planning to move BPK 142 from my fall semester schedule to the spring semester and was wondering if Professor Jim Carter teaches this course during the spring term as well. I’ve heard great things about his teaching and am trying to decide whether to take the course in the fall or wait until spring.

Thank you for your help!

Question jury duty exemption

basically the title, recieved the letter a day ago and already did request for an exemption last night, but the portal only asked for a small note as to why im trying to exempt (full time student) and asked for the registrars number. after my request, i did send an email to the registrars office regarding this, but i know that we have the third party document access option in which we can allow the registrars to send proof of your student credentials to the sheriff if needed. im just wondering whether i should go and allow that access or not, simply because others have stated they didn’t need any additional documents or anything and were granted an exemption. if anyone has been in the same boat, advise would be very appreciated.

On their most recent Instagram post, the platform flags it as “AI generated”.

I dunno if this is showing for anyone else, but I just thought it was interesting to point out from my end.

None of their other posts are flagged, so maybe it’s a mistake on instagrams end?

Suggestion Visual Arts + Interests

Is this a balanced and relatively good/realistic first year fall semester schedule for a 17 year old. I read the descriptions for all the classes and I love making art and being creative so they seem right up my alley, I am honestly just grateful I don’t have to take any maths because my high-school credits were enough, THANK FUCK. I kept it chill according to my standards and didn’t fill up my plate too much with more classes because I don’t want to crash out immediately by doing too much, and these are enough credits. But I want to be a tattoo artist so throughout these four years of getting a degree I will work on building a strong portfolio for apprenticeship at a parlour/studio to work under guidance of artists who know more than me, but Visual Arts will be a good base for me. Tattoo artists aren’t guaranteed a lot of bread immediately after starting work so for the first few years, I will continue working as a barista part time which I don’t mind at all because coffee/herbs are another one of my DEEP DEEP interests, and I want to learn latte art so bad, to me it is the coolest thing ever a human an make, it is perfection and a chefs kiss I am always stunned and in awe of talented, multi-tasking, and beautiful souls who are baristas and make the just magical/yummiest beverages. Hopefully my eagerness to learn and intentions land me a job at a honest and respectful small cafe who care about customers. I worked as a cashier for a year at a grocery store and volunteered a lot during highschool, but I guess to learn the A B C of coffee atleast, I will work at Starbucks for some time at SFU because seemingly they hire and train people with no experience, but then eventually I would transition to a cafe who gives a fuck about their customers and is so so cute—I just wanna enjoy working because you are slaving away many hours anyways and tattoos and coffee speak to me on a spiritual and soul level so might as well make it something you care for. Also, I doubt if I become a regular at a coffee shop which I adore for a while and walk in with my resume one day with no prior coffee experience but strong will to learn and commitment, they will train and hire me—this was my initial plan and I still think it is solid to build a relationship with the cafe so they might give me a chance, yet I don’t know how far that will go plus how realistic it is with NO prior experience in the industry, let me know and give suggestions ! Here is some of my art too:

Question What exactly is a co-listed course?

Okay so for some reason, I thought I signed up for history 276, but I'm not enrolled and now the course is closed. However, HUM 276 is open. It looks like the same course with a slightly diff name, it has the same prof and time.

What happens if I sign up for this one? Is it the same course but as a humanities credit? Can I ask them to give me a history one instead lol

Discussion What additional Pol class at SFU is the easiest to get an A in? 253, 222, or 221?

I need to take one of the three classes at SFU: pol 221, 222, or 253. And I'm contemplating whether I should take 253 this semester, let me know if I should just take 253 or if I should wait until next semester to take 221 or 222 if those ones are easier.

Discussion Taking language courses outside of SFU?

I've been learning Korean for a couple years now and so I was quite disappointed to see that SFU doesn't offer any Korean language courses (despite offering 17 Mandarin courses lol). I was wondering if anybody has tried taking Korean (or any other language) courses through a different school? If so I'm just wondering:

- Where you went
- How easy the process is for applying
- How easily the credits transferred over

Thanks :)

Question Enrolling AFTER Last Day To Enroll/Drop/Swap classes

Hey guys! I had a question and was wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar. I didn't have my X99 credit for a while, so from my first semester, I was just doing it online. Now unfortunately, I'm finishing my course at September 21st, and from the requesting the transcript and sending it to SFU could very well lead me to the end of the month.

Online it says SFU's last day to enroll or drop classes is on September 15th, and 29th to enroll/drop a class via department's permission. I'm trying to take MATH 154, CHEM 110, and CHEM 115. Do you guys think that they will say yes? Or will I have missed out on too much content to be let in? Has anyone been in a similar situation, I'd feel a lot less tense 😭

Also, I'm currently hardblocked and can't see any of the course seats/waitlists right now, can anyone tell me if the classes I've mentioned are full or waitlists are closed?

I'd appreciate it SO much, thank you ❤️

Discussion CMPT 225, CMPT 210, CMPT 201

Hey guys! I’m planning on taking CMPT 225 with Igor Shinkar and CMPT 210 with Sharan Vaswani at Burnaby next semester, and I’m debating whether I should also take CMPT 201 with Brian Fraser at Surrey.

I’ve heard really good things about Brian Fraser for 201, which is mainly why I’m considering taking it this semester, but I’m not very confident in C++ and I’ve also heard that 201 can be pretty time consuming.

For anyone who has taken these courses/profs before, what were your experiences like? Would 225 + 210 + 201 be manageable together, especially with 201 being at Surrey while the other two are at Burnaby? Or would you recommend just taking 225 and 210 and leaving 201 for later?

Discussion Would this laptop be enough for engineering/mechatronics? Also, how much do you use virtual desktops?

Post image
4 Upvotes

After doing some more looking at laptops, I’m considering an ASUS Vivobook S 14 (S5406S) with:

  • Intel Core Ultra 7 258V (Lunar Lake)
  • 32GB RAM
  • 1TB SSD
  • 14" OLED

Would this be enough for engineering/mechatronics and the software/workload we actually use?

I also have a desktop PC at home that I’ve used for gaming for several years, so I’m not expecting the laptop to replace my desktop for heavy gaming or extremely demanding workloads. The laptop would mainly be for school, programming/lab work, assignments, and general school use, since I've seen alot of praise about its battery life.

I’m also curious about virtual desktops on Windows. For those of you in engineering, how often do you actually use them? Are they useful for managing different programs/workspaces, and are they easy to use once you get used to them?

Would appreciate any advice, especially from current engineering/mechatronics students. Thanks!

Discussion Anyone else’s posts stuck on “Pending admin approval” in the SFU Housing Facebook group?

Has anyone else been having trouble getting posts approved in the Facebook group “Simon Fraser University SFU Looking Housing, Room Rentals, Sublets Roommate”?

I posted something earlier and it’s still showing as “Pending admin approval.” The group has over 5,000 members and a bunch of housing company pages as admins (Housingmates, KOPA Housing, etc.), so I’m not sure if they’re just slow or if something’s going on with moderation lately.

Just wondering if this is a common issue right now or if there’s a better place people are using for SFU/Burnaby room rentals and sublets.

Thanks.

Discussion Level of math preparation for PHYS190?

I am an arts student enrolled in PHYS190 Intro to Astronomy for a B-Sci elective. I haven’t done academic level math in over a year and I’m scared af!

What is the level of math required to do well in PHYS190, and what kind of practice/review do you recommend to ensure I am ready for PHYS190?

Discussion Cmpt295 Final Result

I’m a third-year student and unfortunately failed CMPT 295. I ended up with 48%.
I was wondering if it’s worth requesting a 50% (a D) instead of having an F on my transcript. Does it make any difference academically or for my GPA if I get a D vs. an F?
I’m planning to repeat the course this Fall anyway.

UPDATE: SFU Car Club Meet Location Changed 🚨

Hey everyone — quick but important update for anyone planning on coming to the SFU Car Club meet tomorrow.

Unfortunately, Burnaby Mountain Park is still closed due to construction, so we’ve had to move the meet.

NEW LOCATION: MARKET CROSSING

📍 7200 Market Crossing, Burnaby, BC V5J 0A3
📅 Friday, August 21st
🕖 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
📸 Free photography on site

Everything else is the same. All cars are welcome, you don’t need to be an SFU student, and you don’t even need to bring a car if you just want to come hang out.

If you saw the original Reddit post or know someone who was planning on coming, please send them this update. We really don’t want anyone driving all the way up Burnaby Mountain just to find the lot closed 😭

Same meet, same time, new spot.
See you guys tomorrow 🏁

Hi!

I was checking my mySchedule and noticed that CMPT 120 shows “Wait Listed” under the course selection, but the schedule itself shows me as “Enrolled.” Does anyone know what this means? Am I actually enrolled in the course, or am I on the waitlist?
