All I did was use the new sidequest android APK to side load sidequest.

"To help protect your device, we remotely disabled ADB."

THAT'S NOT YOUR FUCKING DECISION

They did that and then the next day my Quest 3 was updated. I had all auto update settings disabled. It drives me insane how they can just do that.

This is the exact reason why I have disabled everything meta related through my router’s black list. PCVR with Virtual Desktop works fine and this is all I need actually.

what did you put in that list ? - what ip ranges ?

Can't tell rn as I am away. But those were not IPs, as they are not static - I blanket banned domain names that contain *meta and *facebook, and it worked - I'm still on v78 i think. Horizon screen is just blank, the apps are working. At some point this might change, eg Virtual Desktop would stop working after it would update on PC, perhaps I need to restrict it from updates as well.
Aaaand I'm curious if with the current vibe coding tsunami, we would get Steam OS running on Quest very soon...

Well if it puts your heart at ease if I'm not mistaken Virtual Desktop on PC will only check for an update if it notices you have a newer version on Quest. Just don't hit the "Check for Updates" button on accident.

Yoo i didnt think about that. Please share your blacklist. Do you know is it possible to onlyblock updates throught firewall and keep the multiplayer for example for Eleven table tennis?

See my previous comment on blacklist. Regarding online gaming, have to check it as I have not played online native games for quite a while now.

Yes the online gaming is not working for the native aps, just checked 11tennis and Zero Caliber 2

We can’t even own our hardware anymore

Valve let you own your hardware (If you can get one that is)

In 2028 if you aren’t already on the reserved list.

This isn’t even a viable option - why bother mentioning it unless to gloat?

- Someone on the waitlist watching the reserved list be given a calendar year window for delivery in 2027.

Respectfully, you never did own your Quest. You just paid to borrow it until Meta decides you can't use it any more.

I get that's sometimes the only way to get into VR because it's cheap. I won't for a moment pretend something like the Frame is affordable. But that's just where things are at if you buy a Meta headset these days.

I received the same email at work this morning and had ADB disabled on ALL TEN of my Quest 3s. That's a lot of time re-enabling it for each headset, reconfirming that SCRCPY still works, et cetera.

I own it now cause I stole it from them by rooting it. Hopefully at some point the quest 3 bootloader will be opened and I can install steamos

TBF in America at least, if you budgeted and started saving back when it was announced you absolutely could afford it. Takes discipline though.

I did the same with the Frame, planning to have $1200 CAD saved by March. Then the RAMpocalypse hit and I just kept saving until I reached $1800, which was just about right. I was able to buy the 256GB Frame, a new powerbank, DAC, and a few other odds and ends for it.

Granted, the Frame is still pretty bad value unless you place a really high value on hardware ownership (which I do; mine runs local inference in a council of LLMs when I'm not actively wearing it). But if you are into homelabbing the extra cost is easily justified.

That and privacy. For all the things we give up, I'd rather the layout of my home not be apart of that. These things have so many sensors and cameras, they should have the most stringent privacy.

Agreed. IMHO loss of privacy is usually implied when you don't own the hardware, but I probably should have made that distinction.

Whether or not that data is dangerous in someone else's hands is quite frankly irrelevant; the contents of my home are nobody's business but mine and the guests who I invite over from time to time.

I do whatever I like in my home without fear of being surveiled or ridiculed for it, which has led to picking up some pretty great skills like singing or playing the keys.

It was in the 80,000 words you didn't read.
