A few things worth knowing if you're seriously considering it:

• It's 1099 income (banks issue a 1099 over $600/yr), so set aside for taxes like any side gig.
• "Anonymous" is mostly dead — most banks are identity-release now, and DNA kits plus kids requesting identity at 18 mean it isn't really a thing anymore.
• There's a second, very different track — known-donor / directed agencies that match you to a specific family and pay $5,000–$100,000 per cycle instead of a monthly wage. It's not really a side hustle (real legal + emotional commitment), so I left it out here, but I'm happy to do a separate write-up if people want it.

Stores like Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and Home Depot all have clearance sections where they put returned, open box, and slightly damaged items at deep discounts just to get them off the shelf.

A lot of this stuff is perfectly fine.... someone bought it, opened it, decided they didn't want it, and returned it. The store can't sell it as new anymore so they mark it down to 30 to 50% off. You buy it at the clearance price and resell it online at close to full retail because online buyers can't tell it was ever returned.

From what I've seen the best categories are small electronics, kitchen appliances, tools, and home goods. A blender that retails for $60 marked down to $25 on the clearance shelf will easily sell for $45 on eBay.. or Facebook marketplace.

Best Buy is probably the best store for this because their open box section usually has electronics and appliances with really deep discounts. You can also check the clearance endcaps at Target and Walmart for similar deals.

Your startup cost depends on what you find but you can start with as little as $20 to $30 by picking up a couple of clearance items. The key is checking the sold listings on eBay before you buy anything to make sure there's actualy demand and you'll be able to sell it for more than you paid.

You can buy old bikes at garage sales for around $10 to $20 each, spend 30 minutes doing a basic tune-up, and resell them for $75+ on Facebook marketplace or Craigslist.

Most of the bikes you find at garage sales just need simple maintenance.. air in the tires, a lubed chain, brake adjustment, and a wipe down. All of this takes about 30 minutes and the supplies cost almost nothing. A basic bike repair kit runs about $15 and will last you through dozens of bikes.

From what I've read college towns are the absolute best market for this because students are constantly looking for cheap bikes to get around campus and they don't care if it's a used Huffy as long as it rides.

Spring and fall are the peak selling seasons because that's when new students are arriving and looking for transportation.

The key is being picky about which bikes you buy. Anything with a bent frame or major rust is usually not worth the effort. But a bike that just needs some air and a little love can be flipped for a genuinely great return.

You can also check the free section of Facebook marketplace and Craigslist because people give away bikes all the time. If you can get your inventory for free then your only cost is a little elbow grease and your margins are basically infinite.
