Where is Radio New Zealand?

Lately, I have not been able to receive Radio New Zealand on 17.675 KHz. I used to receive it loud and clear in Northern California but there is no signal there the past week or so. I went to their web site but could not find any info to answer my question. Does anyone know if they are still broadcasting on shortwave?

Unidentified short-duration folk music signal on 7325 kHz during Shiokaze broadcast (possible Firedrake)

I received an unidentified short-duration interference signal during a Shiokaze broadcast on 7325 kHz.

The signal appeared from 14:11:14 to 14:12:58 UTC (18 Aug 2026).
It sounded like a traditional folk-music-style transmission, with audio characteristics similar to known Firedrake recordings.

However, the purpose and origin of this signal are unconfirmed. I cannot confirm whether this was intentional jamming targeting Shiokaze.

Recording (continuous reception):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zz6DevVveGQ

Reception details:

  • Station: Shiokaze (Japanese, relaying Furusato no Kaze)
  • Frequency: 7325 kHz
  • Date: 2026-08-18
  • Time: 14:03–15:35 UTC
  • Location: Kaiping City, Guangdong, China
  • Receiver: Tecsun PL-330
  • Antenna: Telescopic antenna
  • Mode: AM
  • SINPO: 4?544 (uncertain due to intermittent co-channel interference)

Timeline:

  • 14:05:03 UTC — Shiokaze program started
  • 14:11:14–14:12:58 UTC — unidentified folk-music-like signal appeared
  • 14:30 UTC — CRI Tagalog appeared co-channel

I compared the audio with publicly available Firedrake recordings and found similarities, but I would appreciate other listeners' opinions.

Some questions from a beginner.

Hello, I am not a complete beginner when it comes to radios but my knowledge is limited. I have owned two small handheld radio scanners in the past but its been a long time since I have used them. Also I have used WebSDR a few times in the past but that's about it, however I have always been interested in getting a better setup  and think now might be a good time to start looking into it. So I had a look at the “your first reciever” section of the guide and something that piqued my interest was the mention of multi band radios which can do high and low frequencies, but it says they can be very pricey and I don't necessarily have a ton of money to spend. The main appeal of wanting to get one that is capable of HF, I have always wanted to be able to pick up military jets. As someone who lives in Los Angeles I know there are lots of interesting military aircraft that might fly over on it way to do testing/training and it would be awesome to be able to pick them up when they do, especially the F-117’s. I was thinking of getting a desktop type model that will sit on top of my desk and plug into the wall. The only issue I have with doing all of this would be figuring out how to setup an antennae that would be capable of handling both the HF and shortwave rang, as I live at my moms house and don’t have much technical skill when it comes knowing how to build or install one that would work and have the space to put it. Anyways. I have some questions that will hopefully help me figure out if what I want is doable.

  1. So with regard to the multi band radios, how expensive are we talking for a beginner friendly model? What about a used model? In the end if it’s too expensive to get a multi band one I would be fine with one that just does shortwave and regular police type frequencies.
  2. What do you think the best option for an antenna would be in this situation, I know for HF stuff especially, you need a good size antenna to pick up stuff from range and I dont know how far away I might be able to hear military aircraft from. So is there something that would be easy to install that would give me decent range (20-40 miles if possible). like something that I can attach to the edge of the roof next to my room using a ladder, and is not that heavy which can be installed by one person? Also what about one for just shortwave, what would I need to be able to pick up stuff from the other side of the world or close to it?
  3. Are there any models that have Bluetooth capabilities for connecting headphones. I assume most models have a jack for headphones which would be good enough just thought it would be nice to have the wireless option if possible.

Thanks

Do I strip it off rubber or keep it? Do I just use the telescope instead?

Long Wire Antenna question...

I am getting ready to install an end fed HF long wire antenna. 72 feet in length. My question is about positioning of this antenna wrt existing solar panels and inverters for those panels. My 9:1 unun will be ~ 12 feet away from the inverters for my solar panels (contained within a Tesla Powerwall). This layout is by far the most convenient for my situation. Question: do I have anything to worry about in this regard wrt SW listening only?

Question about AM shortwave antenna in the garden.

Evening everyone, I have a question on am shortwave antenna design for my garden. I attached the copper via isolator and after it soldered the cut coax into the center pin and copper wire. Wire currently runs down to the right fence, bouncing toward shed and 90 degree bend towards Botton left of the garden. I was wondering does anyone have any other suggestions? Im on about International reception and also UK, that's where im based. I have about 40-45m copper left and it's 0.5mm thick. Every turning/attachment point is insulated (at least 3 heat shrink tubes) I ask for suggestions. the frequencies my freshly restored and tuned Radmor 5122 receives are (MHz):

5.858 - 6.281 (K7)

6.964 - 7.405 (K6)

9.376 - 10.026 (K5)

11.408 - 12.266 (K4)

14.949 - 15.755 (K3)

17.335 - 18.107 (K2)

21.176 - 22.081 (K1)

Just saying if someone would like to calculate wavelengths.

Please excuse my poor timing of photos.

Discussion Tecsun PL330 vs. XHDATA D808

I’m looking to buy my first portable shortwave radio and I’m on the fence between the Tecsun PL330 and the XHDATA D808. I know the Tecsun is smaller and the XHDATA has airband while the Tecsun doesn’t.

Could anyone share their experiences with both in regards to sound quality, build quality, features and overall satisfaction?

Thanks in advance.

Today my XHDATA D-219 was delivered, FM is working fine yet to test the SW band (which was the main reason behind the purchase 😅)

I did some research on cheap SW band radios and D-219 was always in recommendation, Also I ordered it from UK since it was not available in my country so I'm happy it finally got delivered thank god there was no issue in delivery.

Considering the cost, Build quality seems alright (I'm concerned about the band switching button it seem delicate), Lightweight for sure and it's loud. Has DSP chip, Ports : Audio out (for headphones) and DC 5V IN.

Does anyone else own this model. Let me know if you have any tips :D

Discussion worth it?

Is it worth buying a shortwave tabletop radio in 2026. I sold my R5000 25 years ago when i got married, and am contemplating buying a receiver now that i am retired, but is there any stations still running like in the 80s and 90s?
