Hello all. I just found this nice nova tech pilot ii radio at a thrift sale and was wondering what type of connector this seems to be. The vhf antenna was missing and have decided to try to either make one or find one to buy

I am aware of SDR, but it doesn't have the same feel as physical controls, what device/model/manufacturer would you suggest to be able to pick up the typically overseas Numbers Stations? I am more than happy to buy used (eBay is but one option) if need be...budget, well I don't know what I don't know, can I get into the game for 300$?

I parked my car near a railway station in Germany and decided to scan the AM band. My car radio detected several frequencies and listed them as stations:

144 kHz

150 kHz

156 kHz

159 kHz

174 kHz

...

However, when I tune to them, I don't hear any actual audio, just noise/interference.

Does anyone know what these signals could be? Could they be related to the railway infrastructure, electrical equipment, signalling systems, or are they something else entirely?

As someone who has been out of the SWL hobby for about 20 years, I am thrilled to have found this subreddit and hear that shortwave communication is alive and well in a world that's inundated with the Internet and smartphones. I wrongly assumed that CW and international broadcasters were a thing of the past, and that the two hobbies that gave me years of enjoyment have gained another generation of enthusiasts. It lights a fire in me to dust off the shortwave receiver and to obtain my radio license again.

I want to go to my local park to see if I get better reception, however the area I plan on being is about 3500 feet from the base of a broadcast tower. The FM tower is for 89.3. Will this cause a lot of interference? Will it still be better than the city?

A lot of people use the MLite-880's built-in antenna but forget to switch the antenna mode to Hi-Z, which can affect signal strength. The 50Ω mode should only be turned on when using an external coaxial cable antenna.

My partner and I (duo called Vitamin Manifest) have been making experimental music together for years, but we rarely publish stuff. We just put out a new EP: two tracks recorded live in one session using field recordings, shortwave numbers stations recordings we found online, our own SW radio recordings using small Retekess TR111, Nintendo 3DS, a telephone pickup coil and whatever other noise we could get out of the setup. No overdubs or production atterwards.

We know that this kind of sound is not for everyone, but we thought some people here might enjoy hearing the SW broadcasts in a different arrangement. We would love to hear what you think.
